6 - Caelum

I place the letter in my jacket pocket and pretend it isn’t burning a hole in me to leave it there. I know Thaddeus deals in secrets and he has people in his pocket all around the castle. If I take this letter at his word that it’s a threat then it shows him how much control he has over me and how easily influenced I am. Something else my mother taught me when I was younger. I mindlink her the basic gist of the note and she agrees that we can handle it later. Copyright ©️ 2026 Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel Productions

I finish breakfast with my mother and we head out for inspections. This is one of my favorite times of the month. I get to be out on the training field as we test different levels of our teen warriors. My mother prefers testing the math and science geniuses. To each his own.

Gunner and Emery are waiting for me with a group of seven. “Let’s get to it!” I say walking up.

Gunner pairs all the warriors and myself off with a teen and we start. Gunner is shouting calls out and the teens have to either go on offense or defense.

It has been a long time since I have had this much fun. I missed the last two testing rounds for work and my body feels it. I workout everyday, but there is something different about this, getting to just play. My life is all duty and obligation, but the guys get me out here when they can. It’s good to know all different walks of lycans in the kingdom. I can’t lead them if I don’t know them.

“Your Highness!” I hear a shout that pulls my focus and the teen in front of me hits me hard with a right hook then a cross that sends me spinning. I hear collective groans and all other noise stops. I blink a few times and shake my head. F*ck that was a good hit. “Your Highness?!” Marcy shrieks, running up to me. I see her move to touch me from the corner of my freshly hit eye. She looks terrified and I start to laugh. She jumps back at the sound, like she just realized what she was about to do.

“Marcy, I’m fine.” I turn to the kid in front of me. He is frozen, face terrified. It’s rare if Gunner and Emery get a hit in, let alone a green warrior still in training. “That was a good move,” I smile to relieve his tension, “and a double lesson. Use your opponents' distraction against them…always; but don’t be the one distracted or you’ll end up with a headache for the rest of the day.” His eyes go as wide as Marcy’s. “It’s okay, you’re not in trouble. If I was that easily distracted by someone calling me, then maybe I need some more practice.”

I laugh again taking a towel from Emery. “Play time’s over already? I thought you were going to be with us the whole day testing.” He probes.

“Plans change. Duty calls. I might have a job for the both of you in the next few days. Stay close. I need to do some fact checking first then I will let you know.”

“Yes, sir.” Gunner and Emery say together. They only bother with the ‘sir’ bullsh*t when we are in company. I wish it didn’t matter, but people like Thaddeus would hear the informality of it and assume they have the right as well. In Thaddeus’ case, he believes he is higher than my mother or myself simply because he has lasted long enough at his position to see three Lycan Kings rule. It’s easy to outlast the king when you aren’t the one who fights the wars.

I shake off the dark thought and turn to Marcy, “What can I do for you today?” Copyright ©️ 2026 Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel Productions

“It…uh…it is Elder Vale, actually.” Of course it is, I didn’t jump at his earlier command, so now he will invade my time any way he can. I sigh and lead the way back up to the castle.

  • Beneath One Moon   5 - Rowan

5 - RowanI’ve been here two days and I feel almost back to normal. The hole a broken mate bond leaves never heals fully, but everything else feels amazing. My sister and I both inherited our mother’s ability to bake away any troubles, so every free moment has been dedicated to laughing and cooking. I haven’t left the house much in forty-eight hours, but it’s a perfect reset. I have no one left here to see except my sister. The rest of the pack looks at me with pity or they avoid me when I visit. It is part of the reason I don’t come back much. Some think I should never return after being rejected. They are on Carys and Declan’s side believing that the mate bonded connection to Forest Lake Pack makes us better, stronger somehow. Others think I should have fought harder to keep my mate, that I am a disgrace of a Luna for walking away when he asked me to. There are always opinions from people who don’t know the whole story. I’m good at pretending to ignore them, but part of me hears wha

  • Beneath One Moon   4 - Caelum

4 - CaelumI take a deep breath. The pre-dawn air is my favorite thing. It’s clean and crisp no matter the season and it isn’t tainted by the work going on in the kingdom. The bakery and restaurants haven’t started their morning ovens. No one is driving across the territory. I can hear the farmers beginning to get equipment out which will give the air a taint of diesel within the hour. The castle is about to start waking up and running like the machine it is. We don’t have any current guests so the pomp and circumstance can be left out for the first time in a long time. Copyright ©️ 2026 Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel ProductionsWorking with my father has shown me much of the world. I see how Lycans, Werewolves, Witches, Warlocks, Vampires and other creatures navigate the world amongst humans. We are all superior to their weak and frail little bodies, but what they lack in natural strength and abilities they make up for in fear and retaliation. That fear has spurred some of the most

  • Beneath One Moon   3 - Rowan

3 - Rowan“Sissy!” Hazel calls as she runs down the steps. She is twenty-one and I am twenty seven and the nickname will never stop, I hope. I take another deep breath to calm the low level of pain that lives in my muscles the entire time I am in Red River. I’m not sure if it is like this for all mates. Or, maybe, because I only got out a portion of my rejection acceptance before I collapsed, I have more pain than most. I do know that I feel better the further I am from Declan. Copyright ©️ 2026 Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel ProductionsI shake my head of the thought and step out of the car just in time to catch my sister in a bear hug. “How are you Hazel?” I take in her sweet scent and I am instantly calm. My baby sis has always been able to keep me level headed.“You said you might come tomorrow. What are you doing here? You never visit early – or at all – if you can help it.” She gives me a look that makes me think of our mother. “You hate it here. I thought you might find an excu

2 - RowanI both love and hate shopping. On the one hand, going with Shelly is like being with a clothing CIA agent. She can spot the best deals on the best clothes. On the other hand, to do that we go to about 20 thrift stores all over Briar Hollow. Being a college town, there are so many to choose from. Sometimes we’ll even go back to a shop more than once. My brain hurts from trying things on over and over to get the right looks and standing there watching her do the mental gymnastics to figure out how to get more than three styles out of each piece of clothing. She should have been a fashion designer, but teaching is more consistent and stable. Stability is the one thing we both need in our lives right now. One thing most of the people in my building have in common is we all come with a history and baggage. Some talk about it, others, like me, don’t and both situations are acceptable. Everyone here wanted to work for a chance to be better and have better. That’s all that matters.

  • Beneath One Moon   1 - Rowan

1 - RowanI smack my alarm. It is far too early for this. Even for a werewolf, I drank too much last night, but it was worth it. We graduated! Finally, I can start making real money and get out of this shitty little apartment. Maybe I can get Hazel out too. Although she seems to be just fine back home. But, she’s not an outcast. Copyright ©️ 2026 Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel ProductionsI can’t really complain, I could be out on the streets. It’s been a good apartment. A tiny little bedroom that holds a twin bed I got from the landlord, with a closet vomiting the ten outfits I own. A bathroom where you have to walk in and stand next to the toilet in order to close the door to be able to get into the stall shower behind it, but it always has hot water. And a living room kitchen combo that is only separated by the loveseat, the biggest piece of furniture in here. No table or chairs would fit. I have never had an issue Dom can’t fix, and he’s taken good care of all the college kids tha
