The Secret Inside Me

last update publish date: 2026-10-12 16:24:36

I barely slept that night.

The thought that my period was late kept returning no matter how many times I tried to distract myself. I told myself it could be stress. Discovering Adrian’s affair, leaving my home, and finding out that the stranger I had spent the night with was my husband’s powerful older half-brother had been more than enough to throw my life into chaos.

Stress could affect my cycle. I knew that much.

But I also knew exactly what had happened between Kael and me.

I remembered the night with uncomfortable clarity: the way he had looked at me across the hotel bar, the strange pull I had felt when he touched my wrist, and the decision I had made to return to his room. Whatever complications had followed, I hadn’t been forced into that choice. I had wanted him, and I had chosen to stay.

Now, the possibility that I might be pregnant made that memory feel different.

I wasn’t ashamed of what had happened. I refused to punish myself for making a choice after seven years of putting someone else’s needs before my own. Still, I couldn’t ignore the consequences simply because I didn’t regret the night itself.

The following morning, I went to a pharmacy a few streets from the hotel. I wore a cap and sunglasses, even though I knew the disguise was unnecessary. Nobody there knew me, and nobody had any reason to care what I purchased.

Yet I felt exposed as I stood in front of the shelves, staring at the pregnancy tests.

I picked up one, then another, comparing the boxes as if the instructions might somehow give me the answer I wanted before I used either of them.

Finally, I chose two and paid.

Back in my room, I placed the small paper bag on the bathroom counter and stared at it for several minutes.

I had spent years imagining what my future might look like. Before I married Adrian, I had wanted to study medicine and build a career that belonged to me. Instead, I had put those plans aside because I believed we were building a life together. I had supported him when he needed me, trusted him when things were difficult, and convinced myself that our sacrifices would eventually mean something.

Now I was standing alone in a hotel bathroom, afraid to open a box that might change my future again.

I took a slow breath and followed the instructions.

Then I placed the test on the counter and waited.

The minutes felt longer than they should have. I washed my hands even though they were already clean, straightened a towel that didn’t need straightening, and checked my phone twice without reading any of the messages on the screen.

When I finally turned back toward the counter, the result was clear.

Positive.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I stared at the two lines until my eyes began to blur, then picked up the test and checked the instructions again. There was no misunderstanding the result. My hands started shaking, and I gripped the edge of the counter to steady myself.

I was pregnant.

The words repeated in my mind, but they didn’t feel real. I pressed a hand over my mouth as a strange mixture of fear, disbelief, and something I couldn’t immediately name rose inside me.

A child.

I was carrying a child, and the father was Kael Draven.

I sank onto the closed toilet seat, still holding the test. My first instinct was to think about everything that could go wrong. I was still legally married to Adrian. I hadn’t decided what I wanted from Kael, and he and Adrian had a history of resentment that had nothing to do with me. Now, if the test was right, a child would connect me to both of them in a way I couldn’t simply walk away from.

But beneath the fear, another thought surfaced.

This baby was mine, too.

I wasn’t going to let anyone treat my pregnancy as a reason to control me. I wouldn’t allow Adrian to claim a right over my future because we were still married on paper, and I wouldn’t let Kael believe that being the father gave him the authority to make every decision for me.

I needed time to understand what was happening before I told either man.

I took the second test, following the instructions again, because some stubborn part of me hoped the first result had been wrong.

It wasn’t.

The second test was positive, too.

I sat quietly for a long time, looking at the two tests beside each other. My life had changed again, and this time there was no way to pretend that I could deal with everything by packing a bag and walking out of a room.

I needed to confirm the pregnancy with a medical professional. I needed legal advice about my marriage. And I needed to decide how I would tell Kael.

He deserved to know he might be a father, but I didn’t want to make that decision while I was still struggling to understand my own feelings. The mate bond was one thing. A child was something else entirely.

My phone vibrated on the bed.

Kael’s name appeared on the screen.

I watched it ring before answering.

“Hello?”

“Have you eaten?” he asked.

His ordinary question caught me off guard. I had expected him to ask whether I had thought about our conversation, or whether I had made a decision about seeing him again. Instead, he was checking whether I had taken care of myself.

“No,” I admitted.

“Why not?”

“I’ve had other things on my mind.”

There was a short pause. “Are you all right?”

I looked toward the bathroom counter.

I wanted to tell him. The words were already there, pressing against the back of my throat. But I imagined his reaction, the questions he might ask, and the way his Alpha instincts could respond to the news. I couldn’t predict whether he would be gentle or immediately begin planning how to protect me and the baby.

I needed to speak to him when I was ready to stand by my own words.

“I’m fine,” I said, although my voice lacked conviction. “I just need a little time to myself today.”

“All right. I won’t disturb you.”

His willingness to give me space made the guilt in my chest worse.

“Kael?”

“I’m here.”

“If I tell you something important, will you listen before you decide what to do about it?”

The silence on the other end lasted a moment longer than I expected.

“Yes,” he said. “I’ll listen.”

I closed my eyes.

“Okay.”

I ended the call before I could change my mind. For several minutes, I remained on the bed with the phone in my hand, trying to gather enough courage to face the conversation ahead.

Eventually, I decided I couldn’t keep the truth from him indefinitely. I also couldn’t let fear make the decision for me.

I called him back.

He answered almost immediately.

“Sera?”

“I’m pregnant.”

The words came out quietly, but once I had said them, I couldn’t take them back.

For several seconds, Kael said nothing. I heard a faint sound in the background, followed by silence, as though he had stepped away from whatever he had been doing.

“Are you sure?” he finally asked.

“I took two tests. Both were positive, but I haven’t seen a doctor yet.”

Another pause followed. I could hear him breathing, and I imagined the news moving through his mind, changing the meaning of everything that had happened between us.

“Is the baby mine?” he asked, his voice lower now.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“You’re the only person it could be. I haven’t been with anyone else.”

He exhaled slowly.

For a moment, I thought he might start asking questions about dates, arrangements, or what we were going to do next. Instead, his voice softened when he spoke again.

“Are you okay?”

The question nearly broke me.

I had spent so much time expecting men to tell me what my choices meant that I hadn’t prepared myself for someone asking how I felt about them.

“I don’t know,” I whispered honestly. “I’m scared, Kael. My marriage to Adrian isn’t legally over, and I haven’t even figured out what you and I are. I can’t have everyone making decisions about my life because of this baby.”

“I’m not going to make your decisions for you.”

“You might feel differently once you start thinking about what it means to be a father.”

“I won’t pretend I know how everything will work out,” he said. “But this child won’t take away your right to choose, Sera. Neither will I.”

I pressed my lips together, fighting the sudden sting behind my eyes.

“Then I need you to remember that when we talk about what happens next.”

“I will.”

I looked at the pregnancy tests lying on the bathroom counter. I was still frightened, and I knew one reassuring conversation wouldn’t solve everything waiting for me. I would need a doctor, a lawyer, and time to decide what kind of future I wanted.

But I no longer had to carry the secret alone.

“Can we meet?” Kael asked. “Only if you’re comfortable with that. We can talk, and I’ll listen.”

I hesitated before answering.

“Yes. But we’re going to talk about everything, including what I need and what I’m not willing to give up.”

“Agreed.”

After we ended the call, I sat quietly, one hand resting over my abdomen.

I didn’t know what kind of mother I would become, whether Kael and I would build a real relationship, or how Adrian would react when he discovered the truth. I only knew that this child deserved a future shaped by more than the mistakes of the adults involved.

And I was determined to protect my right to decide what that future would look like.

Kael didn’t answer immediately. He sat across from me, his expression thoughtful, as though he understood that my question wasn’t something he could dismiss with a charming smile or a promise to make me happy. I needed to know what he expected from this arrangement before I could even consider accepting it.“I want you to be my wife,” he finally said. “I want you and the baby to be safe, and I want the opportunity to be part of your lives. I also want to see where things between us could lead without forcing either of us into a relationship we’re not ready for.”I studied him carefully.“And the mate bond?”“It doesn’t change what I’ve told you. My wolf recognizes you as my mate, and I won’t pretend that feeling isn’t important to me. But I won’t demand that you love me because of it.”“Good, because I can’t promise you that.”“I’m not asking you to.”His answer was reassuring, but I had learned that good i

For several seconds, I thought I had misunderstood him.Marry him?I stared at Kael, waiting for a hint of amusement to appear on his face, but he remained completely serious. He stood beside the table with his hands resting at his sides, looking at me as though he had just offered a reasonable solution to an ordinary problem.I slowly put down my cup.“You cannot be serious.”“I am.”“Kael, I told you less than an hour ago that I wouldn’t marry you simply because I’m pregnant.”“I remember.”“And now you’re asking me to marry you?”“I’m proposing a possible arrangement, Sera. I’m not asking you to agree this second.”I let out a short, disbelieving laugh and pushed my chair back. The sound wasn’t particularly pleasant, but I couldn’t help it. Seven years of marriage had ended in betrayal, and I had barely begun to understand what my life would look like without Adrian. Now his older half-

I spent the next hour trying to convince myself that telling Kael had been the right decision. He hadn’t shouted or demanded that I move into his home. He hadn’t questioned my honesty or accused me of trying to trap him. I had considered meeting him somewhere public, but the thought of strangers overhearing such a personal conversation made me uncomfortable. My hotel room offered privacy, and I could ask him to leave whenever I wanted. He knocked before entering, carrying none of the confidence that usually made him seem as though every room belonged to

I barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I remembered the look on Adrian’s face when Kael had called me his mate. The shock had been unmistakable, but so had the anger that followed it. I knew my husband well enough to recognize when his pride had been wounded, and I had a terrible feeling that he wasn’t going to let the situation go easily. What troubled me more was the way Kael had looked at me afterward. He had been calm, even considerate, but I could sense how much effort it took him to keep his Alpha instincts under control. The mate bond connected us in a way neither of us fully understood, and although I had chosen to spend the night with him, I wasn’t ready to let that connection determine the rest of my life. I had already spent seven years making decisions around another person’s needs. I wasn’t going to exchange one set of expectations for another simply because my wolf had recognized a mate. For several seconds, I couldn’t bring myself to speak. Kael’s declaration still echoed in my mind, and Adrian’s expression made it impossible to pretend I had misunderstood what was happening. The man I had met at the hotel, the man whose touch had awakened something deep inside me, was my husband’s older half-brother. And he had just called me his mate. I looked at Kael, searching his face for some sign that he regretted saying it in front of Adrian. His expression remained controlled, but I could see the tension in his jaw and the way his eyes stayed fixed on his brother. Adrian, meanwhile, looked as though someone had struck him. “Your mate?” he repeated. Kael didn’t look away. “You heard me.” Adrian let out a disbelieving laugh, but there was nothing amusing about it. His gaze shifted toward me, and I recognized the anger building behind his eyes. “How long has this been going on?” I stared at him. “What?” “You and Kael. How long?” The accusation was so outrageous that
