Anastasia's POV

The sentences were read out on a grey Tuesday morning, and I was not in the room.

I sat in Nikolai's office with the television turned low and a cup of tea going cold on the desk. On the screen, a news anchor stood on the courthouse steps. Jackson Reed had received eight years in prison for embezzlement and fraud. Bianca had received six years for identity fraud, forgery, and financial crimes against her own family and company.

I watched the whole report, then switched off the s

  • Bound By A Billion-Dollar Lie   Choosing Each Other

Anastasia's POVThe bridal room was quiet for the first time all morning.Zara had swept through an hour earlier with a steamer, a hairbrush, and a stack of last-minute notes. Now she stood at the door with one hand on the frame, looking at me in my dress and then at the woman beside me. Her face softened."I will give you two a minute," she said. "Just one. I have a schedule.""You always have a schedule.""And it is beautiful." She winked, slipped out, and shut the door.Nana sat on the small sofa by the window in a pale blue dress and a string of pearls I had seen only twice in my life. Her hands rested in her lap. For a long while she said nothing and simply looked at me."Nana? Are you all right?""I am perfectly fine." Her voice wobbled. "I am looking at my granddaughter."I crossed the room, holding my skirt in both hands. The gown was plain ivory silk with a long train and no beads, the one I had chosen after all those samples. I sat beside her, and she took my hands."You wer

  • Bound By A Billion-Dollar Lie   Wedding of the Century

Anastasia's POV"Ana, if you sit down one more time, I will personally carry you to the next shop."Zara's voice rang across the bridal boutique, and three shop assistants looked up at once. I stood in the middle of the room with my daughter on my hip, a sample of ivory silk in one hand and a bag of ribbons hanging from my wrist. My feet throbbed. My back ached. It was only noon."I have not sat since nine," I said."You sat for four minutes at the flower shop.""Because Eliana needed a feed.""And in that time the roses lost their freshness. Come on. We still have the stationery, the candles, the table linen, and the cake taster, and we are two hours behind.""We are behind because you changed the color of the napkins three times.""The first two were wrong.""They were the same color, Zara.""One was champagne, and one was pearl."I closed my eyes and counted to ten.The morning had begun at eight in Zara's car, with a printed schedule stuck to the dashboard. Every stop had a time,

  • Bound By A Billion-Dollar Lie   A moment with him

Anastasia's POVI looked up. Nikolai stood in the doorway with his jacket over his arm and his tie already loosened. His eyes went to the paper in my hand, then to my face."I'm sorry. I did not mean to interrupt.""You didn't." I folded the letter with care. "Come in."He crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed. "Is it from Bianca?"I nodded and handed him her letter. He read in silence with his jaw tight, and then I gave him mine. When he finished, he set both pages on the nightstand and looked at me for a long moment."You are a better person than I am.""I'm not sure that's true.""I would never have written this." He took my hand. "Are you all right?""I don't know yet." I leaned my head against his shoulder. "I feel tired and sad, and lighter than I have in years."We stayed that way for a while. His thumb traced slow lines over my knuckles, and the lamp glowed low and warm. Little by little, the air between us changed.I lifted my head and found him already watching me.

Bianca had received six years for identity fraud, forgery, and financial crimes against her own family and company.I watched the whole report, then switched off the screen. Many people had asked whether I wanted to attend the court briefings. My lawyers asked. Nikolai asked too, gently, more than once. Each time I said no. I had spent years living inside my father's and sister's choices, and I did not need to sit on a wooden bench to watch the last page turn. The news was enough. My hand rested on my belly, and the baby shifted, slow and heavy. Thirty-three weeks along, and every step felt like work."It's finished," I said to the empty room.I felt no joy i

  • Bound By A Billion-Dollar Lie   Third Trimester

Anastasia's POVBy the time my third trimester began, I could no longer see my own feet.Time had rushed past me. One day I stood under the Eiffel Tower, and the next I stood before a mirror with a belly so round that my old dresses hung like tents. My back ached, my ankles swelled by evening, and hunger struck at the strangest hours. Still, I had never been happier.Nikolai changed too, and watching him was the best part.He never missed an appointment, not even the day he moved a board meeting with a single phone call. He sat in the small chair in the doctor's office with a leather notebook on his knee and wrote down every word. He asked about sleep, diet, and exercise. He asked about the heartbeat, the baby's position, and how many weeks remained before the hospital bag should be packed."Your wife is doing perfectly," the doctor said at my twenty-eighth week checkup. "You can relax.""I am relaxed," Nikolai said, sitting stiff as a board.I turned my head to hide my smile."Mr. St

  • Bound By A Billion-Dollar Lie   A Day in Paris

Anastasia's POVI woke to sunlight on my face and the smell of fresh bread. For a moment I forgot where I was. Then I saw the tall windows, the white curtains stirring in the breeze, and the small balcony where the whole city waited. Paris. Nikolai stood by the door with a tray in his hands, wearing a plain grey shirt with the sleeves pushed up."Good morning, Mrs. Starvos.""You went out for breakfast?""I went out for everything." He set the tray on the bed. It had croissants, a pot of jam, sliced peaches, and hot chocolate so thick the spoon stood upright in it. "The baker downstairs swore the almond croissant is the best on the street. I trusted him."One bite and I closed my eyes. Butter, sugar, and warm almond melted together on my tongue. "I might cry.""Please don't, I will be nervous all day."I laughed and reached for a second croissant. My belly had begun to round, and the baby gave a soft kick. Nikolai saw my hand move and laid his palm over the spot. The kick came again,
