The air in the Shadowmoon Pack’s training grounds smelled of sweat, blood, and crushed pine needles. Elara stood at the edge of the clearing, her worn linen dress clinging to her slender frame as she watched the warriors train. Their muscles rippled under the afternoon sun, powerful bodies moving with lethal grace that only shifted wolves possessed.

She hated this place.

Every laugh, every growl, every effortless flip or bone-cracking punch reminded her of what she could never be — a real wolf. At twenty-one today, she was still wolfless. No inner beast. No heightened senses. No healing factor. Just a fragile human body trapped in a world that worshipped strength.

“Still staring, freak?” A sharp voice cut through the noise.

Elara stiffened as Lila, one of the pack’s favored she-wolves, sauntered over with two friends flanking her. Lila’s long auburn hair swayed like a banner of superiority, her curves poured into tight training gear that left little to the imagination.

“I’m not staring,” Elara muttered, keeping her eyes on the ground. “Just passing through.”

Lila laughed, the sound cruel and melodic.

“Passing through? This is the warriors’ ground, omega. Your place is in the kitchens scrubbing pots or spreading your legs for whatever low-ranked male will have you.”

She stepped closer, her perfectly manicured nail jabbing Elara’s shoulder.

“Or did you forget? Tonight is the Mating Ceremony. Maybe some desperate gamma will pity-fuck the pack’s favorite defect.”

Heat burned Elara’s cheeks, but she bit her tongue. Fighting back had never done her any good. Not when she had no wolf to protect her. Not when her own parents had turned their backs on her years ago, ashamed of the daughter who never shifted.

“Leave her alone, Lila,” a quieter voice said.

Elara glanced up to see Mira, a kind-hearted delta, watching from the sidelines. Mira offered her a small, sympathetic smile, but even she didn’t dare step in fully. No one ever did.

Lila rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Enjoy being invisible tonight, wolfless. The Moon Goddess clearly forgot you existed.”

As the group walked away, laughing, Elara clenched her fists until her nails dug into her palms. She had heard the whispers her entire life: cursed, broken, worthless. But today, something felt different. A strange warmth had been building in her chest since morning, like a caged flame finally testing its bars.

Tonight was the annual Mating Ceremony under the full moon. Every wolf who had turned twenty-one would stand in the sacred circle while the unmated alphas and high-ranking males searched for their fated mates. The air would thicken with magic, bonds would snap into place, and lives would change forever.

Elara had no illusions. No alpha would ever want her. She would probably spend the night on the outskirts again, watching others find their destiny while she remained alone.

Still, as the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in shades of blood and gold, she couldn’t ignore the pull. Her skin tingled. Her heartbeat felt heavier, more insistent.

By the time night fell, the entire pack had gathered in the Moonlit Glade. Torches flickered around a massive stone circle carved with ancient runes. The scent of wild jasmine and smoke hung heavy in the air. Young wolves, dressed in ceremonial white and silver, stood nervously inside the circle while the rest of the pack watched from the shadows.

Elara lingered at the very back, half-hidden behind an old oak tree. Her simple white dress was plain compared to the others — no embroidery, no jewels, just clean fabric that reached her ankles. She had braided her long dark hair loosely, a few rebellious strands framing her face.

The drums began to beat, low and primal.

Alpha Kael Voss stepped into the glade like a force of nature.

He was impossible to miss.

Towering well over six-foot-five, with broad shoulders and a chest carved from years of brutal warfare, Kael commanded attention without uttering a single word. Jet-black hair fell slightly over his forehead, and his sharp jaw was shadowed with stubble. But it was his eyes — cold, piercing silver that seemed to cut through the darkness — that made even the strongest betas lower their gaze.

Shadowmoon’s Alpha was only twenty-eight, yet he had already earned a reputation as one of the most ruthless and powerful alphas in the northern territories. Unmated. Unyielding. Untouchable.

The unmated females practically vibrated with hope as he passed.

Elara’s breath caught when his gaze swept over the crowd. For one impossible second, those silver eyes seemed to land directly on her hiding spot. Her heart slammed against her ribs so violently she pressed a hand to her chest.

It’s nothing, she told herself. He can’t even see me.

The ceremony began. One by one, wolves stepped forward as the moon reached its peak. Golden sparks of magic danced in the air whenever a bond tried to form. Cheers erupted as two warriors found each other, their eyes glowing with the unmistakable light of recognition.

Elara watched it all with a hollow ache in her stomach.

Then the drums stopped.

A heavy silence fell over the glade as Alpha Kael moved toward the center of the circle. His presence alone made the lesser wolves step back instinctively.

He lifted his head, nostrils flaring as he inhaled deeply.

And then he froze.

His silver eyes snapped open wide, pupils dilating until only a thin ring of silver remained. A low, dangerous growl rumbled from his chest — so deep it vibrated through the ground.

Every head turned.

Kael’s gaze locked onto the shadows where Elara stood.

No. Not possible.

He took one step forward, then another, his powerful body moving with predatory grace. The crowd parted like water before a shark.

Elara’s legs refused to move. Her mouth went dry as the most feared alpha in the region stopped only feet away from her, staring down with an intensity that made her knees weak.

The air between them crackled.

A sharp, electric pull tore through her chest — painful, beautiful, undeniable.

Mate.

The word echoed in her mind like a forbidden prayer.

Kael’s jaw clenched so tightly she saw the muscle jump. His hands curled into fists at his sides as if fighting some invisible war.

Then, in a voice like grinding thunder, he spoke the words that would destroy her:

“I, Alpha Kael Voss of the Shadowmoon Pack… reject you as my fated mate.”

Gasps ripped through the crowd.

Elara felt the bond — that beautiful, fragile thread that had just sparked to life — twist violently and begin to tear.

Pain, raw and blinding, exploded in her chest.

She staggered back, eyes wide with disbelief and betrayal.

Kael’s expression remained cold, merciless.

“You are too weak,” he said loud enough for everyone to hear.

“A wolfless omega has no place standing beside me. I will not chain my pack to fragility.”

Tears burned Elara’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of him.

The last thing she saw before turning and running into the dark forest was Alpha Kael’s silver eyes — burning with something that looked far too much like regret… and hunger.

The afternoon sun beat down on the training clearing as Elara moved through the forms Kael had taught her. Each strike came faster, stronger than the last. Her wolf was no longer a faint spark — it surged just beneath her skin, lending her speed and power she had never dreamed of possessing.Kael watched her with dark, unreadable eyes. His arms were crossed over his broad chest, but the tension in his shoulders betrayed how hard he was fighting to keep his distance.“You’re holding back less,” he noted, voice rough with approval. “Good. Again.”Elara spun and delivered a sharp kick toward his midsection. This time, Kael didn’t dodge completely. He caught her leg, yanking her forward until she collided against his hard body. Their faces were inches apart, breaths mingling.“Better,” he murmured, his hand sliding slowly down her thigh before releasing her. “But still not fast enough to survive what’s coming.”Before Elara could ask what he meant, a young delta runner burst into the priv

The next morning, Elara woke up tangled in black silk sheets that smelled entirely of Kael. Her body still hummed with unresolved tension from the night before. The memory of his hard body pinning her against the wall, his mouth claiming hers with brutal hunger, and the way his fingers had teased so close to where she ached most — it all rushed back in vivid detail. She groaned and pressed her face into the pillow, trying to smother the heat rising in her cheeks.A sharp knock sounded on the door before it swung open.Kael stepped inside wearing black training pants and a tight gray shirt that clung to every ridge of muscle. His silver eyes immediately found her on the bed, darkening for a brief second before he masked it.“Get up,” he ordered. “You’re training with me today.”Elara sat up, pulling the sheet higher over her chest. “Training? I’m wolfless, remember? Your words, not mine.”Kael’s jaw tightened. “Not anymore. Something’s changing. I felt it last night when I touched you

Elara paced the spacious bedroom like a caged animal.Hours had passed since Kael locked her inside. The heavy wooden door refused to budge no matter how hard she pulled or kicked. The windows were reinforced glass — beautiful but unbreakable. She was well and truly trapped in the Alpha’s private domain. The room smelled like him. Dark cedarwood, fresh rain, and raw masculine power. It clung to the black silk sheets, the leather armchair by the fireplace, and the oversized shirts hanging in the walk-in closet. Every breath she took reminded her of the man who had both rejected and rescued her.Her body ached from the night’s ordeal — scratches stinging on her arms and legs, feet raw from running. But worse than the physical pain was the fire building beneath her skin. The mate bond.Even torn and rejected, it refused to stay silent. It pulsed hotter with every passing minute, sending waves of uncomfortable heat through her veins. Her nipples had tightened into sensitive peaks against

Elara struggled weakly in Kael’s arms, but it was useless. His hold was like iron — unyielding, possessive, and far too gentle for someone who had publicly shattered her heart only hours ago.“Put me down,” she demanded, her voice hoarse from crying and running. Her fists pushed against the hard planes of his bare chest, but the contact only made her traitorous body react. Heat flared where her palms met his skin, the broken mate bond pulsing with painful awareness.Kael didn’t even glance at her. His silver eyes scanned the dark forest ahead as he carried her with effortless strength, his long strides eating up the distance back toward Shadowmoon territory.“I said put me down!” she repeated, louder this time.A low growl rumbled from his chest, vibrating against her side. “Be quiet, little omega. You’ve caused enough trouble tonight.”“Trouble?” Elara laughed bitterly, fresh tears stinging her eyes. “You rejected me in front of the entire pack. You called me weak and unworthy. And

The moment Elara crossed the invisible boundary, the forest changed. The air grew thicker, heavier with the scent of damp earth, decaying leaves, and something far more dangerous — the unmistakable musk of lawless wolves. Rogue territory. A place where pack laws held no power and only the strongest, or the most desperate, survived. Her bare feet ached against the rough ground, but she kept moving, driven by raw pain and the desperate need to put as much distance as possible between herself and the humiliation she had left behind.Every step sent fresh waves of agony through her chest. The rejected mate bond felt like a living wound, pulsing angrily with each heartbeat. It whispered cruel reminders of Kael’s cold silver eyes, his deep voice declaring her unworthy in front of the entire pack.Too weak.Fragile.Unworthy.Tears continued to fall silently as she pushed deeper into the woods. The beautiful golden sparks that had begun dancing between them just moments ago twisted into something ugly and sharp, slicing through her chest like silver blades.Pain — unlike anything she had ever felt — exploded inside her. Is that even possible?”“Goddess, how humiliating…”Lila’s loud, mocking laugh cut through the noise. “I knew it! The defect finally got what she deserved!”Elara’s vi
