Elara struggled weakly in Kael’s arms, but it was useless. His hold was like iron — unyielding, possessive, and far too gentle for someone who had publicly shattered her heart only hours ago.

“Put me down,” she demanded, her voice hoarse from crying and running. Her fists pushed against the hard planes of his bare chest, but the contact only made her traitorous body react. Heat flared where her palms met his skin, the broken mate bond pulsing with painful awareness.

Kael didn’t even glance at her. His silver eyes scanned the dark forest ahead as he carried her with effortless strength, his long strides eating up the distance back toward Shadowmoon territory.

“I said put me down!” she repeated, louder this time.

A low growl rumbled from his chest, vibrating against her side.

“Be quiet, little omega. You’ve caused enough trouble tonight.”

“Trouble?” Elara laughed bitterly, fresh tears stinging her eyes. “You rejected me in front of the entire pack. You called me weak and unworthy.

And now you’re dragging me back like some lost pet?”

Kael’s jaw tightened, the muscle ticking visibly. Blood from the rogue fight still streaked his powerful arms and torso, making him look even more savage in the moonlight. His naked body radiated heat, and Elara hated how her gaze kept drifting to the defined ridges of his abdomen and the powerful muscles of his thighs.

“You ran into rogue lands,” he said, voice dangerously low.

“Alone. Wolfless. Do you have any idea what they would have done to you?”

“I was trying to get away from you,” she whispered, her voice cracking. The memory of his rejection replayed mercilessly in her mind — the laughter, the pitying stares, Lila’s triumphant smirk.

Kael stopped walking abruptly. He looked down at her, silver eyes burning with an intensity that made her breath hitch. For a moment, the cold mask slipped, revealing something raw and turbulent beneath.

“You think running away solves anything?” he growled. “The bond doesn’t disappear just because I said the words. It’s still there, tearing at both of us.”

Elara turned her face away, refusing to meet his gaze. “Then why did you reject me? If the bond is so strong, why humiliate me like that?”

Silence stretched between them. Kael’s arms tightened around her as he resumed walking, his pace faster now, almost angry.

“You wouldn’t understand,” he finally muttered.

“Try me.”

He didn’t answer.

The rest of the journey back was tense and quiet, filled only with the sounds of the forest and Elara’s occasional weak struggles. By the time they reached the edge of Shadowmoon territory, the first hints of dawn were painting the sky in soft pinks and oranges.

Instead of heading toward the main packhouse where everyone would see them, Kael took a hidden path leading directly to the Alpha’s private residence — a massive modern lodge built into the side of a hill, surrounded by tall pines for privacy.

He kicked the heavy wooden door open and carried her inside without hesitation.

The interior was surprisingly warm and luxurious: dark wood beams, large leather couches, and a massive stone fireplace. But Elara barely had time to notice any of it before Kael carried her straight into a spacious bedroom and set her down on the edge of a king-sized bed covered in black silk sheets.

The moment her feet touched the floor, she tried to bolt toward the door.

Kael moved faster. He caught her wrist and spun her around, backing her up until her back hit the wall. He caged her in with his arms on either side of her head, his tall, naked body looming over her much smaller frame.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked, voice rough and low.

“Away from you,” Elara shot back, though her voice trembled. Being this close to him was dangerous. His scent — dark cedar and wild masculinity — flooded her senses, making the mate bond throb with renewed force. Even broken, it demanded contact.

Kael leaned down, his face inches from hers. His breath brushed her lips.

“You’re staying here. In my quarters. Where I can keep an eye on you.”

Her eyes widened. “You can’t just lock me up!”

“I can and I will.” His gaze dropped to her torn, dirty dress, then slowly traveled back up, tracing the scratches on her arms and the dirt on her cheeks. Something dark and possessive flashed in his silver eyes.

“You almost got yourself killed tonight. I won’t let that happen again.”

Elara’s heart raced. She could feel the heat radiating from his body, the way his muscles tensed as if fighting the urge to pull her closer.

The air between them crackled with tension — anger, pain, and something far more primal.

“Why do you care?” she whispered. “You rejected me. You said I was too weak to be your Luna.”

Kael’s hand moved before he seemed to realize it. His fingers brushed a strand of hair away from her face, the touch surprisingly gentle compared to the fury in his eyes.

“Because the thought of anyone else touching you makes me want to rip throats out,” he admitted, voice barely above a growl.

“Even if I can’t claim you fully… you’re still mine to protect.”

Elara’s breath caught. The confession hung heavy between them. For a second, the wall of ice around the Alpha seemed to crack, revealing the storm beneath.

Then he pulled back abruptly, as if burned by the contact.

“Stay here,” he ordered, turning toward the door.

“There are clothes in the closet. Clean up. I’ll have food brought to you.”

“And if I refuse?” she challenged, lifting her chin defiantly.

Kael paused at the doorway, his broad back to her. His voice dropped into a deep, warning tone that sent shivers down her spine.

“Then I’ll tie you to that bed myself until you learn to behave.”

With that, he left, the heavy door clicking shut behind him. Elara heard the unmistakable sound of a lock turning.

She was trapped.

In the Alpha’s private quarters.

With a mate bond that refused to die and an Alpha whose rejection felt more like the beginning of an obsession than the end.

Elara sank onto the edge of the bed, her body exhausted but her mind racing.

She had run to escape him.

Instead, the cold, ruthless Alpha had dragged her straight into his den.

And deep down, a dangerous part of her wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to leave.

The afternoon sun beat down on the training clearing as Elara moved through the forms Kael had taught her. Each strike came faster, stronger than the last. His arms were crossed over his broad chest, but the tension in his shoulders betrayed how hard he was fighting to keep his distance.“You’re holding back less,” he noted, voice rough with approval. “Good. Again.”Elara spun and delivered a sharp kick toward his midsection. This time, Kael didn’t dodge completely. He caught her leg, yanking her forward until she collided against his hard body. Their faces were inches apart, breaths mingling.“Better,” he murmured, his hand sliding slowly down her thigh before releasing her. “But still not fast enough to survive what’s coming.”Before Elara could ask what he meant, a young delta runner burst into the priv
