CHAPTER TWELVE

I heard a knock at my door.

"Come in," I replied, and to my surprise, it was Mary. I had not seen her since that night when she had a bit too much to drink.

"Hey there, I have not seen you in a while, so I thought I should check up on you," she said cheerfully.

I yawned and stretched on my bed, feeling quite sleepy.

“I'm really tired. Can you give me a few minutes to rest?" I said as I dragged the duvet to cover the rest of my body.

"Blue, it's way past noon; I can not do that," she replied, pulling the covers off me.

I pleaded, "Please, I'm feeling really tired."

She gave me a puppy-dog look and said, "I wish I could leave you to rest, but I have no one else to hang out with, so I need you."

Suddenly, a cute little boy rushed into my room.

"Mommy, Mommy, can I have one of the cupcakes now?" he asked with excitement.

Mary smiled at him, her voice gentle. "Not yet, sweetheart, but soon." The little boy pouted and then ran off to play, his disappointment clear on his face.
