The flames didn’t come back right away.

When they finally did, it was only one torch flickering weakly near the back wall.

Kael was on the ground, coughing. The Seer clutched her chest, eyes wide. The Elders stood in silence, staring at the cracked obsidian bowl as if it had split their whole reality open.

And me?

I was still standing in the middle of the circle.

But it wasn’t glowing anymore.

My hands were empty.

My mark wasn’t.

It shimmered like new gold. Freshly branded. Still alive.

No one spoke for a long time.
