My mind was blank, my heart raced a million times per minute, and my legs were frozen on the spot. That’s him. I’m sure it’s him. I need to talk to him!
I excused myself and ran after the figure. Meanwhile, the person realizing that I had spotted him and was now running towards him, walked a few steps and disappeared around the corridor near the pool.
“Wait!” I shouted after him.
“I need to talk to you! You can’t leave like this! Hey!” I was breathless by now. I was all over the place, panting heavily, and barely able to catch my breath.
I need to get to him. I need my answers. This is so freaking unfair!
I took off my silhouettes and threw them on the floor. Why do girls even prefer wearing heels when they do nothing but give you pain? It doesn’t make sense at all! Without another thought, I rushed after him, but he was gone. He simply turned left into an empty hallway, but he was now out of sight and had vanished right in front of my eyes.
What just happened? Wasn’t he just a few steps in front of me? Where’d he go? I opened all the doors in the hallway, but he was out of sight. How is he so fast? It’s not like he’s Flash or something that he could just run off wherever he wanted at the blink of an eye!
Am I perhaps drunk? Or am I seeing things because I’ve been so desperately waiting for him the past couple of months? But it was him, wasn’t it? The same broad shoulders and the same mysterious smile almost hidden by his furry hat that he always wore. I can’t be wrong!
“But he’s gone. Again. And I don’t know when I’ll be seeing him again, or when he’ll ever appear in front of me.” I sighed and looked up at the sky.
Life really is unfair. I went back to the pool, put on my silhouettes, and headed back to the ballroom.
"Oh, hello there! See who we have here!" someone snickered from behind me.
I so wished I wouldn’t see her here…but again, nothing is in my hands anyway. I turned to face my precious cousin, Angelina, coming up to me with a glass of wine in her hands.
“Hi, Angelina. How’ve you been? Haven’t heard any of your scandals lately.” I greeted, sarcastically.
She narrowed her eyes, and threw daggers at me meanwhile also checking how I was dressed, and smirked evilly.
“Well, I’ve been doing great actually, unlike someone who's all sweaty and has her hair all over the place.” she snorted.
Shoot! I really didn’t want her to see me like this. What would she think of me? But it sure is evident now that she hasn’t changed a bit aka I still didn’t really like her. Angelina Young, my cousin sister, she’s just a month older than me and treats me like I’m ten years younger than her. She’s judgemental and a spoiled brat, considering she’s the only child in her family. And yes, she is nothing like her name, the word 'Angel' in her name does not provide any justification.
I rolled my eyes, crossed my arms, and eyed her for a moment. She got taken aback by my actions and I silently did my happy dance.
“Excuse me. You’re blocking my way.” I said coolly and headed towards the dining room.
The night seemed to never last. I walked up to my brother who was, of course, still playing games and sneakily sipping a glass of beer pretentiously every now and then.
“Gotcha, you little quack!” I smirked.
I hurriedly took out my phone and quickly snapped a picture of him with the alcohol.
“Aiv! No! Don’t! You’ll get me in trouble! Aiv!” my brother pleaded. I snorted and pulled out my tongue shoving my phone in front of his face.
“Please don’t do this to me...my dear sister, you know I love you so much…” he said dramatically and we both burst out laughing.
“Where’ve you been?” Nick asked pouting.
“Why? Were you looking for me?” I answered.
“Yes. I was bored…..” he trailed.
“Aww my brother got bored without me. Poor little guy.” I mimicked him.
“Let’s get going kids.” Dad said coming over to us.
“Okay, Dad!” We both said together and chuckled. I hadn’t realized we’d been here for over 3 hours. Time surprisingly went really quick tonight, I thought. Did I take that long running after that guy? Or had I just danced for a long time with that stranger? Either way, I’m just thankful we’re heading back home now.
Once we finally reached home, I parked our car in the driveway and hurried inside before the cold caught me. I really didn’t want to have a runny nose all week. The second we walked in, Nana, stepped out of the kitchen to greet us with a gentle smile on her face and I instantly felt warm.
The phone rang and mom took the call.
“Oh, hi! How’ve you been? How is everyone there?....yeah...” Mom conversed with the person on the phone. Strange, why would anyone call this late? It’s almost past mid-night. Both Nick and I turned to look at each other and shrugged.
“Dad, I’m going to my room to get changed. I’m exhausted.” I whispered.
“Sure, Aiv. Goodnight.” Dad kissed me on my forehead.
I threw my heels at the doorway and ran upstairs to my room.
I took a quick shower and put on my favourite PJ’s and headed downstairs to the kitchen, cause I was hungry, again. I don’t know what’s wrong with me…but I’m been getting craving for food quite a lot for the past couple of months.
I walked into the kitchen and headed straight for the fridge to grab some iced water before grabbing my favourite burritos. I breathed in and out slowly, not letting myself think too much.
“Why do Aiv and I have to go there? You guys can just leave us here, we can handle ourselves!” I heard Nick argue.
I walked into the living room where all of my dear ones were gathered. It’s such a blessing to have them here with me.
“What’s wrong, Nick?” I asked.
“Mom wants us to go to Uncle James's house! Tell her we’re not going, Aiv!” Nick pouted.
“Mom? What’s this about? Why do we have to go?” I asked her.
So we have to leave tomorrow. Like what? Mom always likes planning things at the last moment.
“Uncle James called, and he’s invited us to come over, they’ve planned something special for us. We’ll leaving tomorrow at 8, pack your bags everyone!” Mom demanded.
“Mom! This is so unfair!”
But, there’s no arguing with my mom, we have to follow whatever she says. It’s always been like that.
Ugh! I don’t wanna go there! The place is crappy, and I didn’t spend my best days there. Things sure hasn’t been going well for me lately, has it?
First, I couldn’t meet the guy again, and now I’ll have to leave for our old home in the country side leaving Nana here. I feel horrible right now!
I dismissed the weird thoughts circling my mind and asked him to come in. He threw his hat on my bed and turned to face me.“Aiv.” he said gently, grabbing both my shoulders with his huge hands. He took a deep breath in and cleared his throat.“Look, whatever it is we’re dealing with right now. I promise I’ll never break our promise. I came here to assure you that. Alright? We’ll tell you everything when we’re ready. I don’t think you’ll be able to handle it in the current situation. So, please trust us for the time being, Aiv.” he clarified looking through my eyes. He looked genuine. His eyes looked so innocent. His emerald eyes shone in the sunlight coming from the curtains, they almost looked unbelievable. Everything about him seemed so perfect!“I know, Kevin. My mom can never hurt me. I trust you enough for that, too. But, I don’t know where we’re headed. Things have been strange
“Aiv. We … It’s nothing, honey. We were just discussing some stuff. It’s not that important.” mom said and diverted her gaze outside the window. “Mom, if I’m not mistaken, I definitely heard you take my name. And mom, I also heard you tell Kevin not to tell me anything. Wouldn't it be better if you tell me now so I wouldn’t have to find out later?” “It’s nothing like that, Aiv. We will tell you when the time’s correct. But you shouldn’t know of it now. You may get in danger.” Kevin huffed from beside me. He was holding something in his hand, but I couldn’t see it, since his hands are so big it could hide anything that’s placed in his palms. “I agree with him, dear. It’s not the time yet. Let’s end our discussion here.” mom said, leaning against the window and folding her arms across her chest. My mom, she’d always been so assertive. Once she made a decision, we must stick by it. “Does this even make sense? I’m the one who’s supposed to be annoyed here
“Mom, what’s starting? What are you talking about?” I asked.“Nothing. Get some rest, dear.” she said, fiddling with her fingers and quickly got out of the room.“Nick, did you hear what mom said?” I asked Nick and he just shrugged and sat near the old wooden window. What’s starting? What was mom so nervous about? I have never seen her like this before.I tried to get up from the bed but a blinding pain ripped through my neck. I fell down on the floor, clutching my neck tightly.“Aiv!” Nick shrieked and sprinted across the floor. “What do you think you’re doing? You’re supposed to rest!” he scolded and gently pulled me up.“Ow!” I screamed in agony. I couldn’t say anything but yell, the pain was just too much. I slowly laid on the bed and decided to keep my hand there because it was somehow easing my pain.“Did I fall d
“Aiv! What are you doing out here? It’s raining cats and dogs! I mean seriously? It’s pouring so heavily! For goodness’ sake … Where are the others?” Kevin asked with a worried look on his face.“They-” I started and glanced at my wrist. His touch made me feel warm and I felt my cheeks burning up. He followed my gaze and realised he had been holding my wrist for too long and he slowly loosened his hold.“Oh sorry …” he mumbled in his deep voice. So, he knew how to apologize to someone, too? Fascinating. I thought and chuckled.“Umm … well the others rushed towards the small cottage over there. Uncle George took the jeep so we didn’t know where else to go.” I pointed towards the cottage’s direction and tried to change the topic.“Yeah I heard. So I rushed here but I couldn’t find anyone. I was about to call Nick but then I spotted you. But what ar
“Nick! Cherry! Come over for some snacks!” Mom shouted, grilling the chickens and placing the already prepared ones on the melamine plates. We often served savoury chickens during family picnics. We’d always been a huge fan of mom’s recipe. It’s amazing how she made it so juicy and tender every time. I opened the homemade barbecue sauce and poured it on all of the plates placed on the table.“Smells good!” Nick exclaimed and reached for a plate. “Yum! This is heaven!”Mom grinned and placed a few more chicken on his plate. Cherry took a big bite of the chicken and jumped up and down, clearly loving the chicken and I giggled. Mom handed the rest of the plates to dad and Nana and they ate in peace, reliving their memories together.“I’ll serve myself.” I said and put five pieces of it on my plate. I took a huge bite of the chicken and I could already feel it melting inside my mouth.&ld
The next morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping right by my window. Apart from that, something had been tickling me around my arms. I groaned and opened my eyes slightly to see a baby spider running around my arm. I grunted. I would’ve been menaced by it a couple of days ago. But, I didn’t find it strange and disgusting anymore. I was used to watching it crawl down on its web and wander around our house. It still freaked the hell out of Nick though. He hated how it tickled every time it landed on his arms.I waited till the little spider walked away from my arm and webbed its way down and snuggled back in my bed, holding my blanket closer, and buried my head in my pillow. “Winter is coming.” I chanted in a barely audible mumble. Not the motto used by House Stark though, I thought and stifled a laugh. And then I dozed off again until I heard someone knock softly on my door.“Aiv? Are you up?” Mom silently opened the
