CHAPTER 46

ZANE

Rain hit my face like ice the second my boots cleared the window.

Behind me, the deadbolt gave a heavy clunk as the key turned in the bedroom door.

I didn't look back. I dropped onto the narrow stone ledge outside the balcony, and the rain quickly soaked through my knees.

Four minutes. Marcus had said four minutes on the east camera loop, and half of that was already gone while I was wiping vomit off Veda's chin.

I scrambled back from the ledge, searching for a safe place to put

VEDAThe cart squeaked against the floor before Rosa even came through the door. She walked in with her head down, her small shoulders hunched under her grey uniform dress, and pushed the cart with both hands, her knuckles pale against the metal handle. The man in the black security jacket didn't stay in the hallway. He followed her inside, heavy boots making soft thuds on the thick rug. His broad shoulders, thick arms, and shaved head made him look even bigger. Especially with the black gun holster hanging from his belt.He left the door open about four inches, watching the hallway through the gap.He didn't say anything, walked to the foot of the bed, crossed his arms, and stood there like a wall. His dark eyes moved from my pillow to the nightstand, then to the curtains near the balcony.Under the blanket, my left hand stayed inside the pocket of my nightdress, my fingers wrapped tightly around the torn pack of matches. I didn’t dare move.Rosa stopped the cart two feet from the be

  • Burning For My Husband's Son   chapter 51

VEDAThe house went dead silent after the front door shut downstairs.I stayed curled on my side under the blankets, staring at the grey wallpaper near the headboard. The cotton taped to the crook of my arm was stiff with dried blood and scratchy against my skin.Every time I bent my arm, a deep pain shot through the sore spot where the needle had gone in.My head was pounding. My stomach felt completely hollow, but the sour taste of vomit still sat at the back of my tongue.I pushed the blankets back and swung my legs over the side of the bed. The floorboards were freezing against the soles of my feet, sending a sharp chill right up my calves. I stood up slowly, waiting for the room to stop swaying, then walked across the rug to the double doors.I gripped the brass handle and pulled.Nothing. The deadbolt didn't budge an inch. I gripped the metal knob with both hands and turned it hard to the left, then to the right, rattling it against the heavy frame."Open," I muttered, more to m

ZANEMy head felt like someone had driven a dry wedge into the base of my skull.I hadn't slept for a single second.Every time I closed my eyes in the dark, I saw her right in front of me.Curled up on the freezing bathroom floor in that ruined rose-gold dress, shaking so badly her teeth clicked. The sharp, sour smell of stomach acid and yellow bile filled the room. Her face was paper-white, with dark purple circles under her eyes, and her cold fingers clawed at my sleeves like she was drowning. And then there was the empty pocket. The torn lining where the paper had slipped through and washed down the gutters into the mud while she lay up there alone.I'd spent the last five hours sitting on the edge of the mattress, staring at the floor between my boots until the grey light finally came through the windows. Now I stood in the deep shadow of the stone walkway on the ground floor, the freezing morning air biting through my hoodie. In my right hand, I held a heavy ceramic mug filled w

  • Burning For My Husband's Son   chapter 49

VEDAThe key turned in the lock with a sharp scrape. The heavy door pushed open, and Silas stepped back into the bedroom, holding it wide.Right behind him was Dr. Bennett. He looked exactly like the doctors I’d expect Silas to hire—neat silver hair parted to the side, rimless glasses, and a long grey wool coat buttoned to his throat. He carried a battered black leather medical case in his left hand, its brass buckles dull with age.He didn't glare at me. He didn't look angry. He looked at me the way an expert looked at a chipped vase on a marble table—mildly annoyed by the damage, but already thinking about what it would cost to fix.Silas didn't leave. He pulled the heavy door shut until the lock clicked softly, then walked to the corner near the wardrobe and clasped his hands behind his back.He stood right over the part of the rug where the two pills were buried beneath the floorboards. My mouth went completely dry. I pressed my back against the pillows and pulled the duvet tighte

VEDARosa backed out of the bedroom so fast that her heel caught the edge of the hallway runner. She didn't lift her chin once, keeping the dirty glass clutched against her white apron like a shield as she disappeared into the hallway.Silas stepped through the open door. The air in the room suddenly felt thick and heavy. He wore a dark charcoal suit, so sharply tailored it looked stiff. The sharp smell of cedar shaving cream clung to him, mixed with the cold, wet smell of the outdoors.Behind him, the guard pulled the heavy door shut until only a narrow strip of hallway light remained. The sour taste of bile rushed up my throat, so hot and sharp that my jaw locked as I fought to keep it down. Cold sweat broke out across my back, soaking into my cotton nightdress.I didn't move. I pulled the heavy duvet up to my chin and pressed my hands flat against my stomach beneath the covers, hiding the violent shaking in my fingers.Silas crossed the wool rug without a sound, his leather shoes q

VEDADull grey light leaked through the curtains, falling across the foot of the bed.The rain had stopped, but the room was freezing. Damp cold filled the air, raising the hair on my arms beneath the heavy blanket.I turned onto my back.Every muscle in my body felt like it had been run over. My ribs ached from spending half the night over the toilet, and the feverish sweat on my skin had cooled into a clammy film across my collarbones. My throat burned, leaving a sour, disgusting taste on my tongue that swallowing couldn't get rid of.I kicked off the blankets and lowered my bare feet to the floor. The cold hardwood sent a shock up my legs.I stood up, my knees shaking for a moment, and walked straight to the heavy double doors.I gripped the brass handle and pulled.Nothing.The door didn't move.I twisted the knob hard to the left, then right, rattling it against the frame. The deadbolt was locked from the other side, keeping the door firmly shut. The gala hadn't been a threat. Th
