~ ANNIKA ~

A bouquet was waiting for me on my desk when I arrived. I assumed Angelo was the one who placed it, since he was the only one who could do something like this, but I discovered he wasn't after reading the card. Grace sent it.

I took the flowers from my table and walked over to my dustbin to dispose of them, but I couldn't bring myself to get rid of them.

Groaning in frustration, I returned to my desk, placing them back the way I'd found them before I sat down to stare at them. If she thought sending a bouquet with a card would make me forgive her easily, then she had another thing coming. Things like this don't cut it for me.

I was still lost in thought when I got a knock on my door, and Grace stepped in, with her gaze on the floor. She closed the distance between us and walked over to my side, her gaze still averted. Frowning, I watched her, waiting for her to say something.

"I'm sorry," she finally whispered. The rest of her words were inaudible.

"Annika," she said

~ ANNIKA ~ "I greatly appreciate your help," I said, my smile forced and my body trembling. We had just finished the drawing session, and Angelo had asked me to meet him outside. At first, I didn't want to go. I wanted to lie and say I had to take care of my kids, but I knew that would only make him more suspicious. The sooner I got this over with, the better. It didn't seem like he knew Pippa was his daughter. If he had, he wouldn't have calmly sat with them. He would have confronted me the moment I showed up. He wouldn't have waited this long to talk to me. Right?I wiped my sweaty palms on my suit jacket as I watched him, waiting for him to say something. Aside from asking me to meet him, Angelo hadn't said a word to me since I arrived, which was strange. I glanced around, noticing how deserted the playground was. With the parents and teachers in the hall, we were the only ones around, and that worked for me. I didn't need anyone to get involved."Angelo?" I called out to h

~ ANGELO ~ When I left my office to meet my favorite kids in the world, I thought nothing could go wrong. I just wanted to see Powell, but most importantly, I wanted to meet Pippa. I'd heard so much about her from the time I spent with Powell, and I was eager to meet her. Who would have thought I'd end up being paired with them as their father? At first, I didn't want to be dragged into it, afraid I was overstepping, but when I saw the sad expression on Powell's face as other parents read a passage for their children, I stepped onto the stage to act as their dad. Though the kids didn't seem thrilled to see me, they were glad I was there to help.Glaring at the blank paper, I tried to rack my brain on what to draw, knowing I wasn't that good with my hands. If only there was a way to get through this without having to draw, I would have taken it. But that was the least of my problems. As I watched Pippa, I couldn't help but notice how much she looked like me. Her eyes especial

~ ANGELO ~ I frowned at her response, not buying it at all. She didn't seem like she was crying over something so trivial, but I didn't press the matter. She would have told me if she wanted me to know. We weren't friends, after all. I couldn't force her to do that. She owed me no explanation."It's okay," I said, patting her on the back. "Just let it out. Whatever's eating at you. Trust me, you'll feel great when you do."She looked up at my remark, her eyes widening in a stunned expression. She wasn't the only one surprised. I had never been a good comforter. Lissa always made fun of me for it. But in that moment, I felt like an enlightened monk. Seeing her so sad made me want to offer comfort."Come on. You can weep as much as you want. I won't judge."And she did, bawling her eyes out until a few pedestrians walking down the overpass cast glances at us, thinking I had caused her to cry. We were lucky none of them stopped to ask why, or even called the cops on me. We were just

~ ANGELO ~ I couldn't keep the smile off my face. Thinking back to how well I communicated with Annika during the meeting made me proud of myself. Standing up for the idea when others thought it wasn't the best made me so happy. I wanted to scream it to the world, but I couldn't. No one but me would know how much this meant to me.Sighing, I tapped my index finger on my desk, reflecting on the smile on her face. It was the first time she had genuinely smiled at me since she returned. The smile wasn't as forced as the ones I was used to. She was truly happy, which made me feel accomplished for causing that expression. I had never been this happy before, not even when my father signed the company over to me after I completed my studies.Having her smile was an accomplishment. It showed I was getting closer to my goal of getting her to change her attitude toward me. It wouldn't be easy to pull off, but I was determined to do whatever it took to make her realize I was a changed m

~ ANNIKA ~ All the blood drained from my face at her remark. My heart hammered against my chest as my stomach tightened to the point of pain. Gaping at her, I opened my mouth to talk, but no words escaped. I could only watch her, unable to utter a sound. The rustling from the leaves outside was louder than ever, almost as if I were standing by the tree."Mr. Angelo? You think the same, don't you?" Powell sounded eager. "I felt the same when I met him. He looks like he could pass as Pippa's dad. I told her, but she didn't agree!""Shut up! He's not my daddy. He's a bad man, a dangerous man like Mum said he is. If anyone should be my dad, it's Uncle Jonathan!" Pippa argued, placing her hands on her waist as she glared at her brother."Miss Grace thinks the same, Pippa. You're only saying this because you haven't met him. I'm telling you, he looks like you!" Powell countered, looking like he wanted to drag her ear until she agreed with him.I watched them, too frozen to say a word. My
