Alara's POV

I thrashed against the gloved hand, but before the shadow could lock me in place, I bit down hard on his palm. He cursed under his breath, loosening his grip just long enough for me to break free.

I didn’t wait. I turned and ran as fast as I could, my shoes slapping against the stone path. I heard the window open behind me. I heard my father shout, sharp and angry. But I didn’t stop. I ran through the garden, past the fountains, past the rose bushes that tore at my dress.

I reached the back gate, the one that was always locked. I pulled at it, but it wouldn’t move. It was bolted from the outside. I was trapped.

“Alara!”

My name, not shouted in anger. Spoken low and sharp, right behind me. I turned around, and saw Leyla standing behind me there. She wasn’t running. She wasn’t even out of breath. She stood perfectly still, her face calm, beautiful and terrifying.

“Where are you going, little bird?” she asked. Her voice was still soft, but it sent shivers down my spine. “The door is locked. The gates are locked. The walls are too high. There is nowhere to fly to.”

I backed away from her until my back hit the cold iron gate. “You were going to kill me,” I whispered. “I heard you. Both of you.”

Leyla took one slow step toward me. “We are not going to kill you, Alara. We are going to give you a purpose. Something greater than yourself. You were born for this moment. Your mother knew it, I knew it. Now you will fulfill your destiny.”

“My mother?” I said. “What does she have to do with this?”

Leyla smiled, a terrible, knowing smile. “Oh, Alara. There is so much you don’t know. But you will learn it all tonight. When the monster comes.”

“Kaan Demirhan is not the monster,” I said. “You are.”

Leyla’s smile faded. Her eyes turned cold and hard. “You speak of things you do not understand. Now come with me. It is time to get you ready.”

She reached for my arm. I flinched away, but she was too fast. Her hand closed around my wrist, tight, painful, like iron. She pulled me toward the house. I struggled, but she was stronger than she looked.

“Let me go!” I cried. “Kemal! Someone! Help me!”

“Kemal will not help you,” Leyla said, her voice dropping to a whisper that made my blood run cold. “Kemal is exactly where we want him, and by the time he realizes the truth… it will be far too late.”

Tears burned my eyes as she dragged me across the grass. The cold night air slapped against my face, but inside, I felt like I was burning up with fear.

My aunt, the woman who used to hug me when I had bad dreams, the woman who used to sing me to sleep, was dragging me like a sack of trash. Every step felt heavy. Every breath felt like sharp glass in my throat.

"Please, Aunt Leyla," I begged, my voice breaking into soft, painful sobs. "You held me when I was little. You told me you loved me. Was all of it a lie? Was I just a tool to you this whole time?"

Leyla didn't look back at me. Her grip on my wrist only got tighter, her sharp fingernails digging into my skin.

"Love is a luxury for people who can afford it, Alara," she said, her voice completely dead of any warmth. "You were raised like a princess. You lived in luxury. Did you really think all of that was free? Everything comes with a price."

"A price?" I cried out, struggling against her strength. "My life is the price?"

"Your life is the key," she replied flatly.

We reached the side door of the mansion. The dark shadows of the tall house seemed to reach down to swallow me whole. My knees felt weak. I wanted to sink into the dirt and disappear. I thought of my father’s cold eyes, of Kemal’s sudden departure, of Elif’s terrified face. I was completely alone in this big, beautiful nightmare. Nobody was coming to save me.

Leyla yanked me inside, slamming the heavy wooden door behind us. The sharp sound echoed through the silent, empty hallway. The home I had known my entire life didn't feel like home anymore. It felt like a giant tomb waiting to be closed.

"Walk," Leyla ordered, shoving me forward toward the grand staircase.

I stumbled, catching myself on the cold banister. I looked up at the quiet ceiling, my chest heaving, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs.

I had been a prisoner here for nineteen years, locked behind golden walls. But tonight, I wasn't just a prisoner anymore. I was a lamb being led straight to the slaughter.

"She is my property, Demirhan! I fed her! I raised her! She carries the Vardar name!""I am not your property!" I shouted, stepping out from behind Kaan's shoulder, my hands clenched into tight fists. My voice rang clear and strong through the cavernous room. "I know who I am! I read my mother's diary! I know you murdered her husband and stole me from her arms!"Hakan's face darkened, his pale blue eyes narrowing into cruel slits. "Your mother was a fool who thought love mattered in business. Just like you. You were born to be a bargaining chip, Al

Alara's POVThe orange glow of the distant fire reflected in Kaan's storm-gray eyes like a nightmare."She knew," Kemal said, stepping up behind us on the bouncing deck of the boat. "She knew about your island base before we even left the coast."Kaan did not speak. His face was a mask of pure, terrifying ice. He grabbed the steering wheel with both hands and slammed the throttle forward. The boat surged over the violent waves, cutting through the dark water toward the burning island.Instead of heading for the main dock beneath the burning cliff, Kaan turned the boat hard to the left, steering us around the jagged black rocks on the southern side of the island. He guided the vessel into a narrow, hidden cove covered by hanging vines and sharp stone arches. The engine died as we glided into the dark sea cave."Out," Kaan ordered, his voice dropping into a low, deadly tone. "The main mansion is gone, but the lower bunkers are built into the bedrock. They cannot burn stone."We climbed

Alara's POVThe voice echoed "Do not move another inch, or I will put a bullet through your chest," the voice commanded from the dark. The sharp sound of a handgun hammer being pulled back echoed off the wet stone walls. Kaan did not flinch. He shifted his massive body, completely hiding me behind his broad back. I held my breath, my fingers digging into the rough fabric of his coat.A sudden beam of light cut through the pitch-black tunnel, blinding us for a brief second."Kemal?" a voice gasped. The gun wobbled in the light. "Miss Alara?"My heart stopped. "Elif?"The light shifted upward, revealing a small, trembling figure wrapped in an oversized dark jacket. It was Elif. Her neat braids were messy, her face was covered in gray dust, and her large hazel eyes were wide with terror. In her small hands, she held a heavy iron revolver.Kemal took a step forward, his voice cracking. "Elif... what are you doing here?""I heard the gunshots at the mansion," Elif whispered, tears cutting

Alara's POVThe final name echoed off the cold, soot-stained stone walls of the ruined study, cutting through the freezing air like a sharp blade."Kemal."The small speaker inside the ancient audio recorder hissed with heavy static. A high, dying whistle trailed off into complete quiet as the battery finally gave out. The small red standby light flickered once, twice, and then went dark forever.I stood frozen in the middle of the room. The air was freezing, thick with the smell of wet earth, ash, and old copper, but my skin felt as if it were burning. Kemal’s POVMy throat burned with the taste of cheap smoke, salt, and old copper. The SUV’s engine hummed low and steady, a mechanical beast moving through the dense pine forest in the dead of night. I sat in the backseat, hidden deep in the shadows, my bloody knuckles resting on my knees. Every breath felt like dragging broken glass through my chest. My ribs were cracked from Hakan’s guards, but the physical pain was nothing. It was a faint whisper compared to the violent storm churning inside my head.Up front, Kaan kept his hands locked onto the steering wheel. He didn't look back at me. He didn't have to. • Captured heiress and the Underboss    The Monster in the Story

Alara’s POVThe world broke into sharp, jagged pieces of noise and dust.Bullets ripped through the heavy oak furniture, shredding the thick leather bindings of old books, sending a storm of burning white paper floating through the smoky air. Kaan’s body was a heavy, suffocating weight pressing me down onto the cold floorboards. He covered me completely, his thick coat taking the splinters and glass that rained down on us."Stay low!" he roared over the thunder of the guns.I couldn't scream. My throat was filled with the bitter taste of ash and dry copper. The paper, that piece of faded yellow parchment bearing the name Alara Demirhan, was still crushed inside my fist. My brain refused to accept it. It was a lie. It had to be a cruel trick cooked up by the man holding me down. I lived twenty years as Alara Vardar. I had bled in this house. I had grown up under Hakan Vardar’s cold, watchful eyes.Suddenly, the firing stopped.A heavy, ringing silence washed over the library. The thick
