“So that’s it?” Mickey said. “He’s just giving up? Throwing in the towel? Calling it quits?? Caving in??” “Yes.” Em said. “Quitting, surrendering, abandoning, relinquishing, folding.. all of the above.” “Huh.” Mickey responded. “What? What’s that mean?” Em asked her. “Well. It’s just… Quinn is so.. the opposite of that.” Em thought about this a minute. And Mickey was right. Quinn was the exact opposite of all those things. Actually not giving up or giving in was his entire personality. So why did he give up so easily? Later that night Em laid in bed and couldn’t stop thinking about what Mickey had said. She had been spot on and Em wondered why she had never thought of it. Why did he roll over so quickly.. unless.. Unless he was looking for an excuse. Maybe he had decided he didn’t want to be with her, and needed a way out. Maybe he didn’t love her after all. Maybe he was still in love with his ex girlfriend that he had been with since he was a kid. The thoughts were taking over her brain. Pounding on her skull and bouncing every which way in her mind. Ugh. Now she was getting a headache. She got them more frequently now, after the concussion she had sustained during the wreck. Em popped out of bed and went downstairs to the kitchen for some pain medicine and water. It was late now, almost midnight, and she swore she heard tapping on the glass. After listening for a moment she went back to her task. Though she kept slighting her eyes around without moving her head. Now she’s just being paranoid. Although, she had a great reason to be. After everything she had been through, it would be weird if she wasn’t paranoid. She swallowed the medicine and sat the glass in the sink, then turned around to go back upstairs. When she walked by the living room with the huge glass windows on the back wall she stopped. Then, she screamed. Em jumped seven miles into the air then quickly slammed her hand over her mouth to quiet her screaming. There was someone standing there, looking into her house! But.. the intruder was waving at her. That’s odd. Em squinted against the darkness and then she huffed. She looked up to the sky silently asking the question… ‘why’. Then she marched over to the glass doors and opened one. “Asher! What in the days of all fuck bunch are you doing??!” “Was that English?” He asked her as he walked inside her living room. “Dude. You scared the bejeezus out of me! Why are you peeking into my house in the middle of the night?” “Oh well that’s easy. You didn’t answer your phone.” Asher told her. If she didn’t love Asher to absolute death, and if he wasn’t one of her best friends in the world along with his twin sister Aspen, she would punch him straight into tomorrow. “Okayyyyy….” She drawled, waiting for the rest of the explanation. But big shocker, he didn’t give her one. Asher went to the kitchen and helped himself to a drink and the box of leftover pizza then headed downstairs to Em’s basement. Em rolled her eyes again… she was actually worried they might get stuck, she rolled them so frequently whenever Asher was around…. Em got herself a drink, and followed him downstairs. He plopped himself on the small sofa they had put in the biggest room down there and turned on the tv they had recently hung on the wall. Em used this space to practice a lot, just to get away from the noise upstairs and also not to bug Sawyer and her mom with her music. So besides the small couch, small coffee table, and tv, the room was pretty empty. They sat and ate pizza and watched a friends rerun for the next half hour without even speaking. Eventually, Em turned to him and watched him, wondering what — if anything — was going through his head. “Asher?” She said. “Mmm” he grunted. “What exactly are you doing?” He looked at her then with a mouthful of pizza and frowned. “Eating pizza”. “Oh ma geez Asher.” She got up to leave and go back upstairs to bed but he grabbed her arm and pulled her back down beside him. “Okay.” He said. “I just wanted to hang out with you.” Asher knew everything that had been going on, he knew how upset she had been, and he also knew the train wreck that was her life. He knew everything that had happened to her before she even moved here, and he knew she could use a friend. Even someone to just sit and eat pizza with in the middle of the night. Someone who would watch her favorite show reruns even though he didn’t like them… and to just BE. She smiled and leaned over to give him a peck on the cheek. She then grabbed a blanket and covered them both up. She scooted closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder. Seconds later, she was asleep.Quinn He was in his outbuilding.. and he’d just finished with his last student of the day, a seven year old boy named Christian. His mother always dropped him off and picked him up. Quinn had wondered about the kid’s dad. Most of the students he had were around that age. Not that he had a ton of them. He’d only just started teaching MMA a few weeks ago and pretty much everyone he taught had signed up through his dad. His dad… although he was still pissed at him about all of this … had really stuck his neck out for Quinn. He’d bought the building and all the equipment and then brought him business. Quinn knew it was mostly because John wanted him to stop doing the underground illegal fights. But this certainly didn’t take the place of it … although it did help some. However Quinn couldn’t very well go around beating the shit out of his students. His dad was a very prominent lawyer. He knew a whole lot of people so he started spreading the word about Quinn teaching. And within ab
EmEmerson had gone back to the twins house after her encounter with Quinn. She wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and stay there forever. But when she went downstairs to the basement to do just that… she found Aspen and Asher waiting on her. “Hey … guys …” she said deflated. “Em. Are you alright? Did something else happen?” Aspen asked her. Emerson sighed .. the longest and most pitiful thing she’d ever heard. “Yes. But I really don’t want to talk about it.” She told them. Asher nodded… a pained expression on his face. She felt bad that she’d advertently come between him and Quinn. They’d been best friends before all this. “We’ve noticed you’ve been down for the past few days. And we’re here to help.” Asher said grinning at her. “And don’t try to talk us out of it. You know that will only make us more determined.”Despite everything Em smiled at that. “Come on. We’re going to wrap presents!” Aspen said excitedly. Em agrees and decided to change clothes first. It was
Emerson The next couple of days she stayed busy. She had school and then work. She went to the twins house then home to tuck Sawyer in. As much as she didn’t want to see Quinn at all… she wondered where he was. He hadn’t been at school one day. She knew that for a fact because she heard Elias talking about it in one of her classes. She assumed he was back the next day but she didn’t see him. She also hadn’t seen him at home any. She was getting ready for her weekly meeting with Mara. She’d been thinking about calling Evan. She could definitely use some of that calming effect he possessed. But she was kind of afraid to since he now knew she didn’t take his advice. She was actually surprised he hadn’t called her. Before Emerson moved.. and she was going to therapy with Evan at his office, he would still call and check up on her through the week. Of course those were during his office hours and he called from his office phone … not like now when she talked to him late at night
Emerson The morning after .. the phone call.. she felt worse than she had the morning after drinking all the bourbon. She wondered if Asher would bring her tomato juice and make that same breakfast again for her if she begged him to. Last night after Quinn called her and basically ripped her a new one .. she had cried. She cried for an entire hour. She cried about River and her dad and Huxley and Quinn. Then she cried about her mother and mostly about Sawyer. Had she really abandoned him? Was she being selfish by leaving? She didn’t think so. It was Quinn’s fucking fault in the first place. He’s the one that broke her heart into. He’s the one that won’t abide by any rules like bringing girls to her own house. Why didn’t she stick up for herself on the phone with him?She had been so taken aback by the things he was yelling and accusing her of that she couldn’t even think straight. He had made her feel completely and utterly awful about Sawyer. She loved her brother. But she didn’t
Quinn He hadn’t seen Emerson since she caught him sneaking Zoe out of her house. And fuck he didn’t plan that shit. Quinn knew she told her mom and his dad … ‘their’ fucking parents now … that she didn’t want him having girls over. He understood it. Hell if she brought a guy over he’d be dead before anyone could blink. And it is her house after all. He wasn’t doing it to be an asshole… He just needed an outlet. And Zoe didn’t want to go back to her parents house where she was staying. The girl is 26 years old but she doesn’t live there. She lives a couple of hours away and was in town visiting. So he didn’t have much of a choice. But it wasn’t meant for her to see. Quinn guessed he paid for that shit dearly. When he got home today her mother said she’d left and was staying with the twins. He knew it was just next door but he also fucking hated that she wasn’t there . And he knows that was spurned by his having another girl over. He couldn’t blame her.. but it also meant she i
Em“I’m staying at the twins for a few days.” She told her mother. Carol sighed and started shaking her head. “I don’t want you staying over there Em. We have some things to discuss as a family..” she said. “Well I don’t have anything I want to discuss. And I don’t want to stay here around Quinn. Didn’t we decide he wasn’t to have girls over? And he had a different one over here last night. I don’t want to see that mother. And I’m not going to punish myself by being around it. Now I’m not leaving forever but I need some space from him and from you. I’m just going next fucking door.” Emerson said. She felt bad immediately because her mother looked like she was ready to cry. But she had to be firm. “I wasn’t aware he had another girl over … I’ll speak to John ..” her mom said. Em scoffed. “What’s that going to do? He isn’t going to listen to his dad he’s lost all respect for him. and that happens to be y’all’s fault not Quinn’s.” Em said as she headed towards the door. “Emerso
