Chapter Thirty Seven

Elena’s POV

The elevator chimed and the doors slid open like a held breath finally let go.

We sprang apart so fast you’d think our bodies burned each other. Two of his men stood there waiting stone faced, unreadable, pretending they hadn’t seen his hand on my waist or my lipstick on his mouth. Pretending they didn’t notice the way my chest rose and fell like I’d just outrun a storm.

Valerio didn’t flinch. He was ice again in a heartbeat, all that heat locked behind his eyes where only I could see it.

“Clear the corridor,” he said.

The guards moved without a word. He didn’t ask if I wanted to follow, he just took my hand, fingers firm, and led me down a short private hallway that swallowed sound.

The carpet was thick, the light low, the air smelling faintly of cedar and something darker I could never name. With every step I told myself to turn back. With every step I didn’t.

He stopped at a black door. A hidden sensor clicked; a soft green blink. He shouldered it

Chapter One Hundred FifteenValerio POVMorning sunlight cut through the blinds of my study, slicing across the mahogany table like thin blades of fire. I hadn’t slept. The image of Elena’s pale face under the night sky wouldn’t leave my mind. She had been brave — too brave — and the way she trembled when the truth about her mother unraveled, it made something in me twist. But I couldn’t afford softness. Not now.The nuclear contract had reached a volatile stage. My scientists were running tests across three countries, and I was already two meetings behind with the presidential security council. The Russians were pressing from every side, sending their spies, their coded threats, their fake investors. Every step forward felt like walking through a minefield — and Elena, unknowingly, was standing right at the center of it.I poured myself a glass of scotch even though it was still early. The burn grounded me. My phone buzzed once — a coded message from my field commander in Moscow. The

Chapter One Hundred FourteenElena POVThe car stopped two streets away from the pier. The engine went silent and the night rushed in cold and wet with salt. Valerio did not look at me when he spoke. You walk from here. Keep your phone on. Do not answer unless I say so.I nodded. My throat felt tight but my legs moved. I stepped out and pulled my jacket close. The pier lights flickered ahead like tired stars. Water slapped the wood below with a hollow sound that made my chest ache.I walked slowly. Each step felt louder than it should. My phone vibrated once. A message appeared.Keep walking.I did.The end of the pier opened into a wide circle. Old crates sat stacked near a rusted crane. A single man leaned against the rail smoking. He did not turn until I was close. You came alone he said.I did not answer. I held my phone tight in my palm.He smiled. Thin. Careful. You look like your mother. My breath stuttered. You knew her.He nodded. Everyone who matters did. She was brave. She

Chapter One Hundred ThirteenElena POVI did not tell anyone about the phone. Not Brian. Not Sandra. Not even my father when I checked on him later that evening. I carried the weight of it alone, like a stone pressed into my chest. Every time it vibrated in my pocket my heart jumped, but it stayed silent all day, as if it was waiting for the right moment to bite.Work kept me upright. I walked the site with a clipboard, corrected measurements, approved samples, and forced my voice to stay calm. The workers watched me closely now. Some with respect. Some with curiosity. Some with the same old doubt. I ignored all of it.By evening Valerio summoned me to his temporary office at the site. The room smelled like leather and smoke. He stood by the window with his back to me, city lights spilling across his shoulders. You found something today he said without turning.I froze. I did not deny it. I also did not confirm it.He finally faced me. His eyes were sharp, searching. This is not a gam

Chapter One Hundred TwelveElena POVThat night I did not sleep. Every sound outside my window felt louder than it should. A car passing. A gate creaking. Footsteps that were probably just my imagination. I lay on my side staring at the wall, replaying Lucas words again and again. Ask your boss.By morning my head ached, but I forced myself up. Fear would not pay bills or finish walls. I dressed simply and left early, before Sandra or Brian could ask too many questions. At the site the workers were already moving. The smell of paint mixed with cement and coffee. It grounded me. I walked through each section slowly, touching the walls, checking the fixtures, reminding myself that this place was real and that I was still standing.Around mid morning a black envelope arrived. No return name. No stamp I recognized. My chest tightened as I opened it. Inside was a single key and a folded note.Third floor storage room. Alone. My fingers went cold. I considered calling Brian. I considered ig

Chapter One Hundred ElevenElena POVThe next morning the air felt too still, like the world was waiting for something to break. The restaurant site was quieter than usual. Some workers had not returned after the chaos. I could not blame them. Fear had a smell, and it still lingered in the air like smoke.I arrived early, carrying the new ledger and receipts folder. Every step inside made me more determined. The broken wall was almost fixed, the kitchen lights flickered to life again, and a small part of me dared to believe we might still finish on time.Brian showed up with breakfast and a small smile. You really do not rest, do you?I smiled faintly. Rest is expensive. He chuckled and placed the food beside me. For someone who has gone through hell, you still look like you are fighting for heaven.I looked at him. You talk too much, Brian. He grinned, and for a second, I forgot about everything else.By afternoon, deliveries started coming in again. Paints. Lights. Furniture. The pl

Chapter One Hundred TenElena POVMorning came too quickly. I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the wall collapsing again, dust flying, Sophia’s smile, Lucas’s warning, Valerio’s silence. My body was tired but my mind refused to rest.I got out of bed quietly and washed my face. The mirror showed someone older than the girl who used to worry only about school and exams. I tied my hair back and dressed in simple clothes. Work clothes. Armor. When I stepped into the living room Sandra was already awake, sitting on the couch with her knees pulled to her chest. Brian stood by the window talking softly on the phone. He ended the call the moment he saw me.You should not go back today Sandra said immediately.I poured water into a glass and drank slowly. I have to.Brian frowned. The police report is not done yet. Sophia is dangerous. Her family is dangerous. So am I now I said quietly. They both looked at me.I set the glass down. If I stop every time they scare me, they
