Elena Cruz

“Hey stranger.”

Elena looked up to see Ethan falling into step beside her as she left Anthropology.

“Hey.”

“You’ve been hard to reach. I’ve been texting.”

“I know. Sorry.”

They walked through the crowded hallway, students pushing past them on both sides, backpacks bumping and voices overlapping in that chaotic rush between classes. The building always felt too small during this time, everyone trying to squeeze through the same narrow corridors at once.

“Everything okay?” Ethan asked

AlexanderThe conference room on the forty-second floor of Hale Industries was exactly as Alexander remembered it from the last time he’d been forced to attend a board meeting five years ago all glass and steel and intimidation, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city and a table so polished you could see your reflection in the mahogany surface.Twenty chairs surrounded that table, and nineteen of them were already occupied when Alexander walked in with Vivian at his side. His father sat at the head in a leather chair that looked more like a throne, his silver hair combed back and his suit custom-tailored to hide the way age had started to thin his frame. Richard Hale didn’t smile when his son entered, just gave a curt nod and gestured to the empty seat at his right hand. The seat reserved for the heir.Max sat three chairs down on the opposite side, his expression was neutral but his eyes tracking Alexander’s every movement like a predator watching prey.“Alexander.” Richa

AlexanderThe training yard was quiet that afternoon, just the sound of Elena’s breathing and the scuff of her sneakers against the grass as she moved through the defensive drills Alexander had taught her weeks ago.She was getting better. Faster. Her reflexes had sharpened and her strength had increased in ways that shouldn’t be possible for someone still mostly dormant. The mate bond was changing her. Waking something inside her that had been sleeping.“Again,” Alexander said, watching her reset her stance. “But this time keep your guard higher. You’re leaving your ribs exposed.”Elena nodded and adjusted her position, her arms coming up to protect her torso while she bounced lightly on the balls of her feet.Alexander moved in to test her defense, throwing a slow punch toward her side that she blocked easily. Then another. Then a third that came faster and made her stumble backward when she deflected it.“Better.” He circled her slowly. “But you’re still thinking too much. Let your

Elena woke to sunlight streaming through her window and the heavy warmth of Alexander’s arm draped across her waist. For a moment she just lay there, her back pressed against his chest while his breath stirred the hair at her nape. Safe. Complete. Like this was how mornings were supposed to feel. Then reality crashed back and her eyes flew open.Alexander was still in her bed. The sun was up. People would be awake downstairs.“Alexander.” She shook his shoulder. “Alexander, wake up.”He groaned and pulled her closer, his face burying in her neck. “Five more minutes.”“No. You need to leave. Now. Before someone sees you.”That got through. His eyes opened and he lifted his head, squinting at the brightness flooding the room. “What time is it?”“Almost eight.” Elena rolled over to face him. “Nathaniel’s probably already up. Mrs. Parker too. You have to go.”Alexander scrubbed a hand over his face and sat up, the sheets pooling around his waist. His hair stuck up in directions that would

Alexander and Vivian’s bedroom crackled with tension, Vivian’s voice climbing higher with each word as she sat in front of her white dresser encrusted with pearls and emeralds that caught the lamplight and threw fractured rainbows across the walls. She dragged a makeup wipe across her face with harsh strokes, scrubbing away foundation and lipstick while she twisted in her seat to glare at Alexander every few seconds, her words sharp and accusatory.“I’m beginning to get sick of the way you treat Elena like she’s your most treasured possession.” Vivian’s reflection in the mirror showed eyes blazing with fury. “She’s not even your daughter, Alexander. So why are you so obsessed with protecting her?”Alexander’s hands curled into fists at his sides, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth ached. He turned his back to her and focused on fixing his side of the bed, straightening sheets that didn’t need straightening and fluffing pillows that were already perfect.Anything to avoid this convers

ElenaElena was sprawled across her bed with her laptop open, pretending to work on an essay that was due tomorrow but actually scrolling through social media without absorbing a single post.A car horn blared from the direction of the gate, loud and obnoxious even from the distance between the main house and the estate entrance. She sat up and crossed to her window, peering down through the glass at the driveway below.A black sports car idled at the closed gates, the kind of expensive vehicle that screamed money and bad decisions. Even from here she could see the driver leaning on the horn again, three sharp blasts that echoed across the grounds.Carlos.“That fucking lunatic.” Elena’s hands curled into fists against the windowsill. She watched as the security guard approached the car, bending down to speak with Carlos through the driver’s side window. Whatever Carlos said made the guard straighten and reach for his radio, probably calling up to the house for permission to let him t

ElenaElena pulled into the campus parking lot and killed the engine, but her hands stayed locked on the steering wheel for a long moment. Her neck still burned where Alexander’s hickey throbbed beneath her collar, a constant reminder of what they’d done last night and what they’d do again tonight at midnight. She forced herself to let go of the wheel and grabbed her backpack from the passenger seat, slinging it over her shoulder as she climbed out of the car.The quad was already crowded with students streaming between buildings, their voices blending into white noise that Elena usually found comforting. Today it just made her head ache. She headed toward the humanities building where her first lecture was scheduled, weaving through clusters of people who stood blocking the walkways while they laughed and gossiped about things that felt impossibly trivial. Then she saw her.Harper.Sitting on a bench near the building entrance with Lila beside her, both of them bent over Lila’s lapto

ElenaThe campus café was loud during lunch rush, packed with students shouting orders at the counter and scrambling for empty tables. Elena “Carlos.” Ethan’s voice sliced through whatever was building and Elena’s lungs remembered how to work. He stood in the doorway looking calm but his shoulders were locked tight. Carlos’s face changed so fast Elena almost thought she’d imagined the gold in his eyes. He smiled, easy and

Elena Elena sat cross-legged on her bed and stared at her phone for a full minute before pulling up Ethan’s number and pressing call. He answered on the second ring. “Hey.” “Hey. I wanted to thank you. For what you did yesterday with Derek.” “You don’t have to thank me.” “I do though. You
