Elena Cruz

“Hey stranger.”

Elena looked up to see Ethan falling into step beside her as she left Anthropology.

“Hey.”

“You’ve been hard to reach. I’ve been texting.”

“I know. Sorry.”

They walked through the crowded hallway, students pushing past them on both sides, backpacks bumping and voices overlapping in that chaotic rush between classes. The building always felt too small during this time, everyone trying to squeeze through the same narrow corridors at once.

“Everything okay?” Ethan asked as they navigated around a group blocking the exit.

“My friend Lila lost her brother. She’s home with her family.”

“Damn. That’s awful.”

“Yeah.”

When they got out into the sun Ethan asked

“What about Harper? Haven’t seen her around either.”

Elena stuttered for a while before responding when she realized she hasn’t heard from Harper since that day too

“I’ll check on her later to see what’s going on…” she barely finished the sentence before Ethan interrupted

“You eaten yet?”

“No.” She replied

  • The Alpha who was never mine   Chapter 24

Alexander HaleAlexander sat at his desk reviewing patient files when someone knocked on his office door.“Come in.”The door opened and Max walked in, closing it behind him. His younger brother looked exactly like he always did in that expensive suit, perfectly styled hair, that easy confidence that came from never having to work for anything in his life.“Max. What are you doing here?”“Can’t a brother visit?” Max dropped into the chair across from him without being invited.“You never just visit.”Max smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Fair enough. I’m here because Father isn’t happy.”“Father’s never happy.” Alex said“He’s particularly unhappy with you. You haven’t been home in months. You skip family dinners. You don’t return his calls.”Alexander set down the file he’d been reading. “I’ve been busy.”“Too busy for family?”“What does he want, Max?”Max leaned back in the chair and crossed one leg over the other. “He’s stepping down.”That got Alexander’s attention. “What?”“

Elena CruzElena walked through the front door and heard noise coming from the kitchen which was unusual. The staff usually had everything cleaned up and put away by this time of evening. She dropped her bag by the stairs and walked toward the sound, stopping in the doorway when she saw who it was.Vivian stood at the counter making coffee. Actually making it herself, not asking Mrs. Parker to do it, her hands working the expensive machine like she actually knew what she was doing but just never bothered.Elena couldn’t help but smile. “I didn’t know you knew how to make your own coffee. I thought that’s what Mrs. Parker was for.”Vivian glanced up and a small smile crossed her face, almost genuine. “I’m full of surprises.”Elena leaned against the doorframe and watched Vivian pour the coffee into one of those delicate cups that looked too expensive to actually use. Vivian took a sip, then turned to face her fully, leaning back against the counter in a way that looked casual but someh

Elena Cruz Elena went to her room and closed the door behind her, leaning against it for a moment while trying to catch her breath. The house felt too quiet around her, too big, and she needed space to think. Everything felt wrong. All of it. She moved to her bed and sat down, then immediately stood back up because she couldn’t stay still. The nightmares wouldn’t stop coming, every single night waking her up drenched in sweat with her heart racing and images she couldn’t quite grasp slipping away the second she opened her eyes. And during the day this restlessness crawled under her skin constantly, making her want to run or scream or do something just to get it out. And her emotions were the worst part. They swung wildly from one extreme to the other without warning or reason. One minute she’d feel something intense and overwhelming, the next minute she’d feel absolutely nothing at all, like someone had flipped a switch inside her and turned off every feeling she had. It didn’t

Elena CruzEthan drove her back to the estate. The ride was quiet at first. Music playing low. Elena stared out the window watching the city blur past. She could feel him looking at her. Glancing over every few seconds like he wanted to say something but didn’t know how.“You sure you’re okay?” he asked finally.“Yeah. I’m just tired.”“You keep saying that.”“Because it’s true.”Ethan’s hand moved from the gear shift to rest on the console between them. Palm up. An invitation.Elena looked at it. Then at him.He was watching the road but his jaw was tight. Like he was nervous. Like he was waiting for her to decide something. She put her hand in his. His fingers closed around hers immediately and relaxed slightly. They drove like that for a while. Hands linked. Neither of them talking. When they reached the turn that led up to the estate, Ethan slowed down. Pulled over to the side of the road before the gate. Put the car in park.Elena looked at him. “What are you doing?”“I don’t wan

  • The Alpha who was never mine   Chapter 19

Elena Cruz Elena sat across from Ethan at a small coffee shop downtown. He was talking about his soccer game last night. How his team won. How he scored the final goal. How the crowd went crazy. She nodded and smiled when it seemed right but wasn’t really listening. Something felt off. Her chest was tight. Her skin felt too warm. Everything around her seemed louder than it should be. The espresso machine hissing steam. Conversations from other tables bleeding together. The scrape of chairs against the floor. Someone laughing too loud near the window. “Elena?” She blinked. “What?” “I asked if you wanted to come to the next game. This weekend.” “Oh. Yeah. Maybe.” Ethan leaned forward. “You okay? You seem distracted.” “I’m fine. Just tired.” “You sure? We can leave if you’re not feeling it.” “No. I’m okay.” But she wasn’t okay. Her emotions were doing something strange. One second she looked at Ethan and felt warm. Liked the way he smiled at her. Liked how he’d bought her cof
