AGREEMENT

Katie's Pov 

I looked down at my ringing phone, it was Aunt Mary. She was Ma's sister who worked as a secretary for one of the big companies in the state. I wish I had her job, I thought as I picked up.

"Good morning aunt M", we called her aunt M,

"Katie, your mother told me you are looking for a job. Come to the company, I need to talk to you", aunt M always went straight to the point, 

Before I could reply, the line went dead. The company wasn't so far from where I was so I walked there. 

The company building was so big. Glass doors covered the outside. I'm sure it had up to 100 floors, and I wondered how the view would be from the top floor. I walked in and there was Aunt M at her desk, she looked up at me and pushed her glasses up. She had a stern look, she always did.

"Katie, how are you?", she looked right at me,

"I'm doing okay Aunt M, how are you?", I kept her gaze and smiled lightly, 

"I called you here to tell you about a contract my boss is offering ", she said ignoring my question, "Let us go to the sit out to talk", she walked out of the desk, and I followed her to the reception sit out where she sat and I sat across from her, 

"My boss needs to get married. He did not tell me why, but I sense it is urgent. It would be a contract, and the girl would get paid a very decent wage. All you have to do is live with him, pretend in front of his mother, and get paid every month", her voice was plain, and she looked me dead in the eye,

I thought for a while, "How much is the monthly wage?",

"He would tell you that while in the interview ", she gave me the 'take it' look,

"Alright. I'll go in for an interview ", I wanted to bite myself,

She got up, and u followed her to her desk again. She picked up the phone, and dialled, 

"Good morning Mr Josiah, an applicant for the contract has come for an interview ", she paused, then she nodded, dropped the phone, and turned to me,

"He's waiting for you. Use the elevator, top floor, first door on your left", she looked at my sternly, "Don't mess this up", I nodded and left,

I thought long and hard in the elevator. It was going to be a while to the top floor, and I had little time to think. I had always envisioned romance in my life. I had never had a boyfriend, and I thought that when I did, it was going to be like the one in the books I loved to read. Maybe I read too much of them. But if the wage is substantial, and would do alot for Ma and Suri, I would forgo my romance for them. They deserve it. 

The elevator doors opened to a magnificent view. My jaw dropped. The glass windows showed the sky in all its beauty. How high is this building?, I thought as I walked to the first door on my left, and knocked.

"Come in", the person answered, and I went in,

There was a very handsome man sitting at the table. He was young. This was Aunt M's boss?, wow. He had a broad chest, suggesting he was a regular at the gym. His hair was gelled backwards, having a wavy look, and I was tempted to run my hands through them to feel. 

"You must be an applicant for my contract. Have a seat", he looked hard at me, and I couldn't help but look at his lips while he talked, 

"My secretary tells me your name is Katie", he looked up at me again, I nodded, and he returned to look at a file in his hand,

"You look decent enough. Decent looks, and you can converse in proper English. That works for me", he dropped the file,

Decent looks, what did he mean by that,

"I'm assuming you already know the job description ", he got up, and began pacing around the room,

"Yes ", I nodded,

"You will be my wife for two years. You will live in my house for those two years. I will give you a monthly wage of a thousand dollars, to keep your mouth shut. After the two years, you will file for a divorce on some believable reasons, and we will go our separate ways", he sat on his chair across me looking directly at me,

"Do I get to work?", he scoffed,

"No", he said said flatly,

"Can I have a day or two to think about it?", I really needed to,

"You walk out that door, and that ends it", he turned his chair towards the glass windows,

Why did he have to be so cold? I sighed, and he turned to face me,

"Do we have a deal or not?", he stared at me again,

"It's a deal", I immediately felt a sick feeling at the bottom of my stomach, a feeling of, 'what have I done'. He had a sickening smile on his face worsening the feeling I was already having,

"Put your signature down there", he placed a paper before me, showing me where to place the signature, 

"Yes, and we would move to a different state. Where people who know you and I would have not be able to watch us", I looked at him in shock,

"You did not say that before I signed", I retorted,

"It would not have made a difference in the outcome of your decision", he was so confident and rude, 

"Drop your number with my secretary so I can reach you. You can leave", he turned his chair to face the windows again,

Aunt M already had my number, told her I got the job, and walked out, feeling like I had made the worst mistake of my life.

Josiah's Pov 

"Drop your number with my secretary so I can reach you. You can leave", I said to her, and turned my chair to face the beautiful view,

I heard her stand there for a while, before walking out. I almost felt sorry for her, poor thing must have imagined falling in love, and all that nonsense. Well, I'm glad I got to be the one to break reality to her.

I smiled as I got up. She's not so bad. Decent looks. We could work on her dress fashion, but she passes. Now I have to make wedding plans, and move far away from here. I would manage the company's branch in another state and get a manager here. Sounds like a plan, I voiced out, looking into the clouds, and sipped the coffee in my hands.
