LOGINChapter 8
Leah's P.O.V
He sounded amused, yet the mockery in his tone couldn't be ignored.
“So you’re really in the hospital. I thought you just called the teacher to give a fake excuse so you could stay at home,” he sneered.
Since he had seen me, I was no longer in a hurry to leave.
“Not everyone is like you,” I lifted my chin, feigning defiance. Since we were in the hospital, he couldn’t possibly harm me, could he?
“Talking back to me, huh?” he scoffed and inched closer, and I instinctively took a step backward.
“What? Are you scared?” he asked.
“I’m not scared—”
“I’ll take my leave now. I don’t have time to waste on ugly ducklings like you.”
He interrupted me, even before I could finish. Sky is such a jerk. One second he called me pretty, the next he’s calling me an ugly duckling. He even made it look like I was the one who was begging to start a conversation.
I don’t blame him, I blame myself for coming out. I went back to my ward, and luckily, mom was still asleep.
I made up my mind not to leave the ward, so when Mom wanted to go home to prepare homemade tomato soup for me, I reminded her multiple times to bring my phone and some books.
When mom returned, she brought my books and phone as I had requested.
And I was able to stay in the ward without being bored. Today was Friday, and school usually closed early on Fridays.
While I was busy reading my book, the door opened, and a voice called out, “Leah!”
I looked up and saw Melissa, my best friend.
“Lisa!” I beamed.
She entered, and three other girls who were also my classmates entered after her. I was surprised. They also brought my favorite flowers—roses and lilies.
“What a pleasant surprise,” I said.
“Yesterday, our homeroom teacher announced that you were sick, so we decided to come and visit you today,” Melissa said and beckoned to the other girls holding the flowers. “Keep them over there,” she pointed at the table.
She did?. No wonder Sky said something about me taking an excuse to stay at home.
“I’ll go to the temple with my mom tomorrow to pray on your behalf, okay? I'll pray specifically for you to get well soon, and cast out evil eyes!”
“Isn’t that exaggerated?” Claire, one of the girls said, and we laughed.
“Melissa, you should become a nun instead, so that your daily prayers can wipe out your bad luck,” another girl called Quincy said, and another round of laughter followed.
“You won't believe this,” Flora started excitedly. “On our way here, Melissa—”
“Hey, hey, hey!” Melissa interrupted Flora before she could finish. “I thought we were here for Leah. How come everything is suddenly about me?” she pouted and mumbled, “How embarrassing.”
“She slipped and fell for no reason,” Flora completed her sentence in one breath, and another round of laughter followed.
We chatted for some time before they left. They made my day in the hospital fun.
After they left, the ward became quiet once again. Then I realized something eerie—Mom was nowhere to be found.
Before Mom left over an hour ago, she only said a few words, withholding all information about her whereabouts. “I’m stepping out for a bit. I’ll be back soon.” Thinking about it now, Mom had been with me since yesterday. Wasn’t she supposed to go to work? She never misses a day at work — not even when she was sick, or when she had a life-threatening illness. How come she had time to keep me company? I would ask her about it when she returns.

“I’m stepping out for a bit. I’ll be back soon,” I said as I pat Leah’s hair. I needed to step out to clear my head.
I went to a nearby coffee shop and ordered a cup. It was quiet here — just what I needed. From the minute I decided to go home to check up on Leah, I knew I would definitely be fired. Though I hadn’t called to hear from my boss, I already considered myself an unemployed lady. I stared at my phone screen, not sure if I should make the call, but before I could stop my fingers, it tapped the contact ID, “My New Boss.” Yes, it has been saved like that for two years now, but certainly this call will tell if the name should be changed.
For a moment, I thought the call would be ignored, until it was answered at the last ring.
“Hello—”
“Come to the house to get your stuff. For old times’ sake, you’re lucky enough to get paid this month.”
And with that, the call ended.
It was my boss’ wife who had answered the call. Like she said, I was lucky. I didn't even expect she'd consider “old times' sake.” Throughout my two years of staying here, we didn’t have much interaction about some things that weren’t about work, so I can’t tell if she liked me or not. I don’t blame them for firing me just like that, because it was stated in the contract that if I defaulted from the many rules listed, I'd quit.
Tomorrow, I will go and pack my stuff, then start looking for a job after Leah is discharged. I left the café and returned to the hospital.
“Leah, I’m back,” I announced.
“Mom,” Leah smiled.
I dished out the food I had bought and went to the chair by the bedside. I scooped a spoonful and directed it to her mouth, but she refused to accept it. She stared at me weirdly.
The smile on her face just a few minutes ago had disappeared, leaving behind a grim expression, which made me shift uncomfortably on my seat.
“What’s wrong, Leah?” I asked in a shaky voice.
Chapter 20Leah's P.O.VHe had actually left the car without waking me up—and worse, he locked the door. Is this how Mom expects me to come back home alive?Mom had said she spoke with Sky, and he promised to take care of me. I almost didn't even last one day under his care.“You accidentally locked the car?” I asked with a dry laugh. It's funny, and at the same time not funny.Sky's P.O.VI could tell from her laugh that she didn't believe a word I just said. How do I explain to her without sounding stupid?**Flashback**We arrived and parked in the garage. Barry came out first, and went to carry some luggage in the boot.I locked my phone screen and got down too. “Let me carry it,” I said, reaching to take the luggage from him, but he declined. “It's fine. Besides, there's another in the boot,” he said and passed me the key.“Okay,” I said and after taking the bags, locked the boot and the car doors. Leaving the garage, I closed it behind me.After a while of arranging my things, I
Chapter 19Sky's P.O.VI never expected Leah to be such a crybaby. Was she actually crying because she was leaving for school? How annoying. At first I felt it was because of me, but at a second thought, even if I hadn’t said we should leave today, we would still be leaving tomorrow. I even made it easier for her by leaving today. That way, she can get over it earlier. I'm sure she would've gotten over it by tomorrow.I took out my handkerchief and unwillingly handed it to her. Seeing that she didn't take it after a few seconds, I glanced at her.“Do you want it or not?” I asked.Leah's P.O.VI hesitated. ‘Do I want it?’ I asked myself.I didn't want to take what was his, but I needed it, so I reluctantly took it and wiped my tear-streaked face and runny nose. This is embarrassing. I must look so messy right now.My eyes were puffy and felt heavy from crying, and I decided to close them for a while until…Sky's P.O.V“Fuck!” Barry cursed and took a rough turn, the car jerking sideways
Chapter 18Sky's P.O.VThroughout breakfast, I noticed that Leah kept sending glares my way. How disrespectful. Did she think she was a little princess who could do whatever and look down on whoever she wants?I decided to wait for her outside her room, because she's willful and I'm not sure if she'd open her door. We have a lot to discuss, and I'll be more than happy to show her where she stands and teach her manners. Leah's P.O.VI turned to go back downstairs before he could see me, but unfortunately, he already saw me. “Where are you running off to?” he said.I quickly turned around and pretended like I wasn't about to run. I decided to take the bull by the horn and face my fears.I walked to him — no, to my room… and unlike my expectation, he didn't step away.“What do you want?” I asked, looking up at him.He flicked my forehead — sharp, unexpected and I gasped in disbelief, covering the spot. “What is wrong with you?!” I exclaimed angrily and raised my hand to hit him back, b
Chapter 17Yoyo's P.O.VDad informed me that he was getting married soon, and because my soon-to-be little stepsister was celebrating her birthday, Dad said I should give her a gift.I wasn't good at picking gifts, so I let Josh help me pick one because he has a sister in elementary school, so he was better at it. I went to pick it up at his place, so Dad didn't know the gift wasn't handpicked by me.That evening after they registered their marriage, Dad wanted to take her home because it was already late, but I wholeheartedly offered to drive my new mom home. She had been my friend since I was nine, and now that she and Dad were married, I couldn't have been happier to have her as my mother. This was my first time going to her home, so I relied on her instructions for directions. I parked the car by the roadside and walked with her down the street and stopped in front of the door. Since I had to go back home, I didn't follow her inside.“Say hello to my little sister for me,” I said.
Chapter 16Leah's P.O.VMy pulse thudded in my ears as I climbed the stairs. I neither know how to be a big sister, nor how to put my words. I’m not sure if I was excited or not, but I’m certain it wasn’t a bad feeling. Getting to his room, I knocked, but there was no response. I pressed my ear against the door, and I could hear shooting sounds from a game. I decided to push the door open, but it was locked from inside. “Hey, it’s time for dinner,” I said. The sound paused, and I repeated, “It’s time for dinner.” The next second, the sounds resumed—this time, even louder. The sudden blast of gunfire made my shoulders jerk“That was rude,” I frowned. I went back to the dining room and sat down.“Were you able to talk to him?” Mom asked.Wouldn't saying no mean that I couldn’t sweettalk a child to having dinner? “Yeah, he said he’s not hungry,” I said.Ehiana’s P.O.V.Dave and I hadn’t seen each other in a while. Work had swallowed most of his time, and I knew he was carrying his ow
Chapter 15Leah's P.O.V“Who's there?” I asked from behind the door.“Leah, it's me,” I heard Mom's voice.I unlocked the door and helped her carry her bag. “Welcome back, Mom,” I said.“Thank you,” she smiled. “You took so long,” I said as I followed her to the living room. “Yeah. I didn't realize how late it had gotten, She said. ‘Great! Mom had already moved on,’ I thought. She was already forgetting her home, where I was. Good! Congratulations to Dave and his son for successfully replacing me in my Mom's heart. “Mom, I'm about to prepare dinner. Do you care for something specifically?” I asked. “I already had dinner,” Mom said.Wow. I wasn't expecting that. “Really?” I muttered. “I also brought you dinner. You can just repeat it,” Mom said. “Oh,” I said simply. “Then… I'll go take out the trash,” I added.Since dinner was already made, I decided to take out the trash first before anything else. I forgot to take it out this morning. “Okay,” Mom said and went to her room to f
