54 Interrogation with Bias

I force my eyelids open with effort and see the dim half-light of an unfamiliar room. It’s hard to tell what time of day it is, since heavy blackout curtains hang over the massive windows.

My head is splitting, my eyes are watering, and my mouth feels like a full-blown desert. My body feels like it weighs a ton and is glued to the bed.

I try to move, but feel some painful discomfort in my arm. Looking closer, I see a catheter fixed into the bend of my elbow and an IV stand next to the bed. Nothing’s being pumped into me now, unlike when I was sleeping.

Strange, but at first glance the room doesn’t look like a hospital ward at all. A giant double bed with dark sheets, a huge TV on the wall, some painting, one black door and another semi-transparent one leading to a walk-in closet, a bedside table with a glass of life-saving water on it… my gaze locks onto it immediately.

I decide to quench my thirst first and, with weak hands, start reaching for the glass. I hear someone let out a heavy sigh in the room and instantly turn my head that way.

In the corner by the curtains stood a soft armchair, and in it sat Nazar, pissed off like a thousand devils.

He was staring at me, tense and unblinking. Only the tight clench of his jaw gave away what he was really feeling.

Slowly, my memory started coming back, tossing in some very unpleasant images. Yesterday, I was completely off the rails! Nazar dragged me into his den, which scared the hell out of me. But I woke up here, alive and apparently unharmed, in his bed, most likely wearing his gray T-shirt and definitely without any underwear.

I felt a bit embarrassed and decided to hide behind the glass of cool water, slowly sipping the life-giving liquid. But the water ran out way too fast, and I had to face the pissed-off demon sitting opposite me.

And honestly, it’s his own damn fault! He shouldn’t have kidnapped me! And by the way, all of this is because of him, that lying bastard!

"How long was I out?", I try to feel out the situation.

"Almost a day," the brunette clipped coldly, still watching me without a break. "The sun’s almost set now. But I’ll be asking the questions here!"

"I need to go home," I ignore his jab. I’m not about to explain shit to him or dance to his twisted tune.

"Like hell you are going anywhere until I get all my answers!", the asshole states firmly, earning a savage glare from me.

"Thanks a lot for helping me yesterday, sure. But don’t you think you’re overdoing it?!" I snap back, getting angry.

"No, I don’t."

"This is kidnapping!" I protest.

"This is a necessary measure!" Nazar barks, slamming the armrest. "You could’ve died yesterday if I hadn’t been there! You passed out and could’ve cracked your skull somewhere! Or choked on your own vomit! A hundred other “or” could’ve happened in that state!"

"I threw up?" I don’t remember that.

"Not this time, but that’s common when you take that kind of shit! But that’s not the point. How long have you been taking this crap?"

"Not as long as you might think," I glare at him. "That was only the third time," I hear Nazar exhale in relief. Is he really that worried? Why?

"You get hooked on that shit fast, but in your case I showed up just in time. Why were you taking it?"

Because you “showed up just in time”! If not for you and your fake perfection, I wouldn’t have started at all!

Like a complete idiot, I was suffering, eaten alive by guilt and a bunch of other shitty feelings… for nothing! I just wanted to forget, to not feel the crap in my soul, so I went for something that stupid.

Because of him! That mocking idiot! But no fucking way I’m giving him the satisfaction of hearing that!

"Wanted some variety," I snort angrily and see his gaze darken, his hand clenching the armrest.

"I’ll give you variety," he grits through his teeth without blinking. Oh yeah? What exactly are you gonna “give”? I don’t say it out loud. "Who gave you that shit?"

"Found it on the floor," I go defensive, crossing my arms, and hear Nazar exhale sharply. I swear I saw his teeth bare.

So handsome and dangerous…

Five More Years Later:“Get your little asshole ass over here!” Masha yelled at her brother, who skillfully dodged her between the trees. “Your ass hasn’t had a proper beating from me in way too damn long! Looks like they spoiled the hell out of you here without me!”Laughing at full volume and shrieking on ultrasonic frequencies, the boy quickly found protection in the form of his older brother Lukas and hid behind his legs.“Masha, stop bullying Dima,” the guy picked up the dark-haired little boy into his arms.“Who the hell is bullying him?!” the blonde threw her hands up indignantly. “He can run anyone into the ground till their ass sweats through their pants all by himself...”“Maaasha,” Anya looked at the girl reproachfully while laying snacks out on the table in the middle of the green garden, while I flipped meat on the grill. “We beat everything, but your mouth? Absolutely hopeless!”“Why would I beat it?” our beauty snorted. “I still need it...”“Yeah, to kiss Vovka with!” L

Nazar Yartsev:A gloomy day in a gloomy place. A light drizzle began to fall, painting the gravestones in darker shades. The wet earth stuck unpleasantly to our shoes, but the little boy didn’t care. He stood there staring at the smiling photo of someone dear to him, sincerely grieving the loss.“Lukas, let’s go already,” Masha said softly, taking the boy by the shoulder with understanding. “It’s about to pour. Mom’s in a better place now. She’s not suffering anymore there. And there’s no booze there either,” the blonde added quietly and sadly, running into my reproachful glare.Natalya died six months after we took guardianship of her children. I hired a caretaker to help the woman, to look after that disaster of a mother. But the problem remained the same. Natalya herself didn’t want help, and during the hours when the caretaker wasn’t there, she kept drinking thanks to her “kind” neighbor. Her mind never cleared, not even once, during all that time. Then one day, the caretaker simp

“No. She’s fine,” the woman reassures us quickly. “I need to talk to you both. Come back up to the ward. They’ll let you through.”Within minutes, we’re already outside Masha’s room, and we’re invited inside.Only the little girl and Elena are there. The woman watches me carefully as I walk over to Masha, take her hand, and ask worriedly how she’s feeling.“Masha, you and I already talked, and you spoke very positively about Nazar and Ann. I think they finally want to ask you something,” the woman says with a slight smile, giving us an encouraging look, and we realize the moment has come.“Masha, please tell us,” Nazar says to the confused little girl, and it’s obvious he’s nervous as hell. I take his hand because I’m shaking like a leaf myself. This is so much more nerve-racking than it seemed in my head. “We know you already have guardians, but… would you want us to become your official guardians instead? Me and Anya.”Masha stares at us wide-eyed like she can’t believe what she jus

Anya Shumilskaya:“What are you doing here, Dad?” Nazar asks Mr. Yartsev, who’s leaning against his son’s car, watching us closely with his arms crossed.“I thought we were family and helped each other in hard times,” his father scoffs, looking at us with cold steel-gray eyes. “I know everything.”“Well of course you do. Somebody already ran their mouth,” my boyfriend sighs heavily and leans against the car too, caging me between his arms.“Nazar, now isn’t the time to argue,” the man replies calmly to his son’s irritation. “Tell me how the girl is and what the doctors are saying.”Grinding his teeth, Nazar reluctantly gives in and tells his father everything that’s been happening. About the kids and Masha’s condition, and about their half-assed guardians. Oleg listens carefully without interrupting once, only staring thoughtfully at his son.“And you seriously want to take two homeless kids into your care?” Apparently, that’s the only thing that truly unsettled the elder Yartsev out

We searched everywhere for you!"Well, there it was.The greedy bitch had finally shown up."What's going on? Aunt Vita?" Masha looked fearfully at her aunt and the man. "Where's Luka?" she asked Anya in panic. My beloved calmed her, quietly whispering that he was somewhere safe, with us."My dear girl! Why did you run away from home like that? See where it got you?"The woman tried to approach the bed, but I stepped in front of her, blocking the way and glaring at the actress."Then why didn't you come immediately after being told your precious relative was in the hospital?" I growled at the mangy goat. Her companion immediately opened his mouth."And what makes you so damn smart? There wasn't any transportation running!"
