Chapter 2

Outside the hospital room, Dean pulled out his phone.

“Immediately kick Sharon out of the rented house! Leave the signed divorce papers on the bed,” Dean commanded his subordinates.

Dean ordered his men to kick Sharon out of the house he had rented, even if it was the middle of the night, he didn’t care.

“Bruce should not move too much; it will affect the healing process of his leg. Although his legs are difficult to move at the moment, there’s no need to worry. With treatment and practice, his legs can still recover,” explained Bruce’s doctor patiently.

Bruce worked at a small company and didn’t have insurance to cover the hospital expenses when his car got into an accident.

“But I want to go home, doctor. I want to see my wife!” Bruce exclaimed.

“Bruce! Don’t be stubborn! If you want your leg to get better, you have to listen to the doctor!” Aileen said.

“I don’t care, Mom. If I don’t see Sharon, I can’t rest.”

Aileen sighed, seeing her only son’s stubbornness.

“But you need to rest in bed now, Bruce.”

“If Bruce really wants to go home and see his wife first, it’s okay. Later, we can have a nurse from the hospital accompany Bruce,” the doctor said.

“Thank you, doctor,” Bruce said. The doctor nodded and bid farewell to Bruce’s room.

Bruce became impatient. Finally, he could go see Sharon.

Bruce missed his wife very much. He wondered why Sharon didn’t accompany him to the hospital. He had been calling her for a long time, but she didn’t answer. He didn’t know if something had happened to Sharon.

But now that he had the doctor’s permission, a smile appeared on Bruce’s face.

Bruce had no idea that Aileen had prepared a surprise in the house he rented that would make him hate Sharon so much.

Aileen’s car stopped in front of a rundown rental house.

In the past, Bruce lived a luxurious life. He used to be the chief financial officer at Dean’s office. But then he met one of the employees there, Sharon. Sharon’s beauty and kindness melted Bruce’s heart.

Bruce bravely introduced Sharon to his parents. However, instead of their blessing, they insulted Sharon.

“Mom doesn’t approve of you marrying her, Bruce. I’ve decided to arrange a marriage for you with Vicky!” Aileen said at the time.

“I never agreed to an arranged marriage, Mom. I don’t want to marry a woman I don’t love for the sake of the company. I have made up my mind. Even without your blessing, I want to marry Sharon!” Bruce firmly said, holding Sharon’s left hand tightly.

Sharon looked up, incredulously staring at Bruce. She didn’t expect Bruce to defend her in front of his parents. She didn’t want to be the reason for the rift between Bruce and his family.

“Just because of this woman, Bruce, you dare to defy your own parents! What has she given you? Her body?” his father sneered.

“That’s enough, Dad! Don’t insult Sharon like that! She’s not the kind of girl you think she is!” Bruce clenched his fist tightly, feeling the pain in his heart as he heard Sharon being continuously insulted by his parents.

“So what?” this time, it was Aileen speaking. Then she glared at Sharon fiercely. “Hey, girl! My answer is, you can never be with Bruce. I won’t allow you to use my son!” Aileen approached Sharon and immediately grabbed her shoulders, causing Sharon to wince in pain.

“Stop, Mom!”

“Let this shameless woman know her place. How dare she dream of becoming your wife, Bruce! Today, she must die!” Aileen put her hand on Sharon’s neck, forcefully choking her.

Bruce panicked, trying to help Sharon who was struggling to breathe. Meanwhile, Dean stood still, silently watching everything unfold.

“Cough…”

“Mom is too arrogant! Mom almost killed Sharon!” Bruce shouted as he managed to pry Aileen’s hand off Sharon’s neck, causing her to immediately start coughing.

“Mom doesn’t care. This bitch made you refuse the arranged marriage with Shirley! She made you defy Dad and Mom. She changed you, Bruce!”

“I have changed, Mom. Sharon changed me. She made me realize that happiness is not just about wealth. All this time, you only cared about money and never thought about my happiness as your child. And even before I met Sharon, I had already firmly rejected the arranged marriage. I brought Sharon here to seek your blessing. Because I still remember that you are my parents.”

“Even if we were dead, we would never agree to your marriage!” Dean firmly said. Aileen nodded, agreeing with her husband’s words.

Bruce snorted and then smiled bitterly.

“Now I finally understand. You have always been selfish, not caring about my happiness. Today, I am leaving this family as well. Tomorrow, I will marry Sharon, marry her as my wife. With or without your blessing!” Bruce’s declaration surprised his parents, their eyes widening in astonishment.

Sharon also seemed surprised by the words Bruce spoke. She was about to say something, but Bruce’s hand grabbed hers, and he quickly walked away from the house.

“Bruce! As long as you are with that woman, you are not our child!” as Bruce and Sharon’s footsteps faded from their sight, Dad yelled at Bruce. At the same time, Aileen began crying in her husband’s arms.

Bruce continued to hold Sharon’s hand as they passed through the gate of her parents’ house.

“Bruce…please don’t do this. They’re your parents—”

“Did you hear them, Sharon? From now on, I am no longer their child!”

He looked at her with teary eyes. Then Sharon’s hand grasped Bruce’s palm, gently caressing it.

“Bruce, I truly love you. But I don’t want to be selfish in this relationship. I don’t want to be the cause of a rift between you and your parents. They’re doing this for your happiness, Bruce. So let me breathe a sigh of relief. I’ll step back and let you go back to your family.”

“No, Sharon! I don’t want to lose you. And what you’re saying is wrong. Besides money, my parents have never thought about anything else. Now I’ve found my own happiness. You are that happiness. And before that, I won’t let you leave me.”

“But, Bruce—”

“Shh…” Bruce put his index finger on the woman’s lips, looking at Sharon carefully. “Don’t say anything; I want you to promise to marry me!”

Sharon wiped away the tears that kept falling. Honestly, she felt sorry for causing Bruce’s parents to lose their child because of her. But Sharon also loved the man in front of her.

Now let Sharon be a little selfish. Like Bruce, Sharon didn’t want to lose her happiness.

“Okay, Bruce. I promise to marry you!”
