CHAPTER 2: The Woman in My File

(Daniel’s POV)

I noticed her long before she noticed me.

That was the first truth.

Amara Nwoye wasn’t supposed to exist in my world the way she suddenly did—sitting three tables away from me in Willow Café, tapping impatiently on her phone like the fate of the universe depended on it.

But life had a strange sense of humor.

And sometimes fate walked into a room without warning.

I leaned back slightly in my chair, pretending to focus on the numbers glowing on my laptop screen. In reality, my attention had been fixed on her for the past ten minutes.

She looked different in person.

Less polished.

More real.

The woman in the photograph inside my investigation file had looked distant, almost untouchable. But the woman sitting in front of me now looked tired… frustrated… human.

That made things complicated.

Very complicated.

My phone buzzed on the table.

I didn’t need to check the screen to know who it was.

“Talk,” I answered.

“Did you find her?” the voice on the other end asked.

Caleb.

My closest friend.

And the only man who knew exactly why I had spent the last six months searching for a ghost from the past.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

Silence filled the line for a moment.

“Are you serious?”

I glanced across the café again.

Amara had just finished her call, and the anger in her expression was unmistakable.

She looked like someone who had been cheated.

Or betrayed.

Interesting.

“She’s here,” I continued calmly.

“In the café?”

“Yes.”

Caleb let out a low whistle.

“Well, that’s… unexpected.”

Unexpected didn’t begin to describe it.

For six months, my private investigators had been chasing fragments of information. Old addresses. University records. Business registrations.

Every path eventually led to the same name.

Amara Nwoye.

But no one had been able to confirm her exact location.

Until this morning.

When my assistant informed me that the owner of a small event company called Nwoye Events had been using Willow Café as her unofficial office for the past three weeks.

So I came.

Not to talk.

Not to introduce myself.

Just to observe.

That had been the plan.

Plans, however, rarely survived reality.

“What does she look like?” Caleb asked.

I watched her rub her temples in frustration.

“Strong,” I said.

“And?”

“Unpredictable.”

Caleb snorted.

“That’s not helpful.”

I ignored him.

Because the truth was far more complicated.

She looked nothing like the woman I expected.

And yet…

She looked exactly like someone who could destroy everything.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Caleb warned.

Too late.

I had already spoken to her.

“She knows your name?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“And you told her willingly?”

“Yes.”

Caleb groaned.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“You promised you would keep your distance until we confirmed everything.”

My gaze drifted back to Amara.

She was staring into her coffee now, completely unaware of the storm quietly forming around her life.

“I needed to see her up close,” I said.

“And?”

I hesitated.

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

Because the moment she looked at me, something inside my chest had shifted in a way I hadn’t expected.

“She doesn’t look like someone capable of what happened,” I admitted.

Caleb’s voice hardened.

“Neither did the last person who betrayed your family.”

That sentence landed like a blade.

The memory surfaced immediately.

Flashing lights.

Hospital corridors.

My brother lying lifeless under a white sheet.

And one name written in the investigation report.

Nwoye.

I closed my eyes briefly.

“Just be careful,” Caleb continued. “If she’s connected to what happened to your brother, getting close to her could cloud your judgment.”

Cloud my judgment.

Maybe.

But something told me staying away from her would be impossible now.

Because at that exact moment, Amara stood from her chair and gathered her laptop and documents.

Then she walked toward the door.

Instinct took over.

I stood up.

“Where are you going?” Caleb asked through the phone.

“Home,” I replied.

“But she just left—”

“I know.”

I grabbed my jacket and followed her outside.

The evening air carried the scent of rain.

Amara stood on the sidewalk, struggling to open her umbrella while balancing her laptop bag.

For a moment, I simply watched.

She was stubborn.

That much was already obvious.

The umbrella snapped open suddenly and nearly hit a passing pedestrian.

“Sorry!” she said quickly.

The man walked away grumbling.

I couldn’t stop the small smile that formed on my face.

Then she started walking.

And without fully deciding to, I followed.

Not closely.

Just enough to keep her in sight.

She turned down the street toward the parking area behind the café.

That was when the sky finally broke open.

Rain poured down in seconds.

Amara cursed under her breath as the wind flipped her umbrella backward.

“Perfect,” she muttered.

I walked forward before I could stop myself.

“You’re holding it wrong.”

She spun around.

“You again?”

Her expression was half surprised, half annoyed.

I reached for the umbrella.

“Here.”

She hesitated.

Then reluctantly handed it to me.

I adjusted the angle slightly.

“There,” I said. “Now the wind won’t catch it.”

She stared at me for a moment.

“You seem very invested in helping strangers.”

“Only the interesting ones.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“You say things like that to all women?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Most women aren’t as stubborn as you.”

For a moment, she looked offended.

Then she laughed.

A genuine laugh.

And something about that sound made my chest tighten.

Dangerous.

That was the word.

Amara Nwoye was dangerous.

Not because she might be connected to my brother’s death.

But because standing this close to her made it surprisingly easy to forget why I had been searching for her in the first place.

“Thank you,” she said finally.

“For the umbrella advice.”

“You’re welcome.”

She shifted her bag on her shoulder.

“Well… goodnight, Daniel.”

Then she turned and walked toward a small silver car parked under a tree.

I watched her drive away before returning to my own vehicle.

Inside the car, the silence felt heavier.

I opened my laptop slowly.

The file was still there.

INVESTIGATION: NWOYE CONNECTION

At the top of the document sat a photograph.

Amara’s photograph.

Taken years ago.

Underneath it was a single line of text.

Possible connection to the accident that killed Michael Cole.

My brother.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard.

Then I closed the laptop.

Because something had changed tonight.

This was no longer just an investigation.

Now it was personal.

And the worst part?

For the first time since Michael died…

I wasn’t sure if I wanted the truth anymore.

Victor finally broke the silence. "Nope." Nobody looked at him. Victor pointed at the screens. "Absolutely not. We already have giant monsters, psychic babies, evil networks, and underground cult scientists. We are not doing dead fathers too." Daniel slowly stepped forward. His voice came out rough. "Dad?" The image smiled sadly. The expression was so familiar it made Daniel's chest hurt. "Hello, Daniel." Amara looked between them. The voice sounded real. Too real. The pause
