Chapter 5

Author: Beeping Squid
I spent the next two weeks locked in the room, watching the manor transform through the windows that were nailed shut.

Xavier had bulldozed my garden and replaced it with Alice’s favorite plants, which were a carpet of scentless green plants.

My beloved designer furniture was all thrown out as well and replaced with something more child-friendly.

Xavier spoiled Alice rotten. He had been neglecting his duties as the Don, so he could spend his days taking her for walks around the manor.

On a certain evening, half a month into my imprisonment, the door finally opened.

Xavier stepped in expressionlessly with a stylist who was carrying a dress trailing after him.

“There’s going to be a dinner with other dons. Your attendance is compulsory.”

He looked at me icily as if looking at an animal.

“I’m sick. I'm not going.” I rested against the headboard and could not even be bothered to look at him.

The last two weeks of confinement had chipped away at my dignity. It had also taken away the last of my hope for him.

“Grace, don’t force my hand. Don’t forget your duties as the Donna, your job is to keep up the image of a loving relationship with me.”

I turned to him and suddenly felt insulted.

He had shunned me and imprisoned me, yet still had the guts to use me to keep up appearances.

At last, I obliged. I got up and changed into the dress.

Not because I was willing to compromise, but only because I would otherwise be cut off from the outside world if I stayed here.

Tonight’s dinner was my only chance to see Rosalia.

I had already obtained the signed divorce papers. It was only after confirming that the assets were ready that I could have the assurance to leave.

During the dinner, I stayed next to Xavier and presented myself as the respectable Donna in a gorgeous haute couture gown. I laughed merrily during conversations.

Donna Clement took my hand and smiled tenderly, “My dear, I’ve been wondering where you’d been for the past two weeks. Is it just me, or have you lost a lot of weight? Was it because of the pregnancy?”

My smile froze, and my heart nearly stopped.

What was she talking about?

I turned to Xavier, who was elegantly swirling his wine glass. There was a faint, gentle smile hanging on his lips.

Upon noticing my gaze, he candidly put his arm around my waist.

“Donna Clement, I was just about to share the good news.”

With that, he raised his glass and tapped it with his finger.

“Since everyone is here, I would like to share some good news.

“My wife is two months pregnant! The Whitmore family is about to welcome an heir.”

A chorus of thunderous applause, accompanied by congratulations, erupted.

Meanwhile, I could feel my hands and feet trembling and freezing. I felt dizzy and had trouble breathing.

Two months.

Alice had been pregnant for roughly two months as well.

Everything made sense.

He was going to use me to legitimize his bastard child with Alice.

“Are you insane?!” I gritted my teeth and whispered to him, “Why should I be the mother of that bastard?”

“You should feel honored, Grace.” He angled his glass to take a sip of wine before stating calmly, “You will be the mother of the rightful heir. What else could you want?”

“What about Alice? Can she stomach her child calling me mother?” I sneered.

“She's much more understanding than you are.”

The look in his eyes softened at the mention of Alice. “She says that as long as the child is safe and can be made the rightful heir, she does not care about titles.”

I hissed at him, “Xavier, you disgust me.”

He thought nothing of my rage and proceeded to tighten his grip on my waist, “Quit scowling. Don't forget, you're here as the Donna.”

I took a deep breath and excused myself to the restroom to touch up my makeup. There, I finally found Rosalia.

“Donna!” Rosalia was taken aback when she saw me, “You've lost so much weight. I heard they locked you up…”

“No time for catch-ups, Rosalia.” I held her arm tightly and said everything at once in a hushed voice, “Have all my assets been transferred?”

“Everything has been done as you instructed. Donna… Are you trying to get away?

“It’s too risky under these circumstances. They have eyes on you everywhere, there’s no way you can make it out…”

I smiled and gently pinched her nose, scrunched up from worry.

“Don’t underestimate me. I need you to hand this letter to Xavier’s former underboss, Noah Gill. He'll take care of things.”

One year later.Somewhere amidst an island known for being a tourist destination, there was the sound of a baby crying.“Don't cry, don't cry, Daddy's here.”Noah gently settled the child in the cradle. His movements were delicate and practiced.I had an apron strapped around my waist and was stepping out of the kitchen with a tray of cut fruits when I witnessed the interaction. It was very heartwarming to see.“Is she trying to get your attention again?” I approached and leaned against his shoulder.“She just woke up. She must be hungry.” Noah turned around and kissed me on the forehead before asking, “Where are Rosalia and Annie?”“They took the tourists out for surfing lessons. They seem to be having a blast.” I smiled and shook my head.Noah and I had enough savings to live lavishly for several lifetimes. Regardless, we decided to run a resort on the island where I gave birth to our daughter, Sophia Gill.“The livestream is about to start.” Noah gently patted Sophia’s back

The wind in the cemetery was chilly and seemed to slice against Xavier’s cheeks.Though he stood gravely before Sam’s tombstone, he was smiling.Soon, he would return to Grace and take her on a honeymoon.By the time the car pulled into the manor, the sun was coming up.He stepped out of the car and swiftly entered the house, into the living room.“Where's the Donna?” he asked one of the housemaids assigned to nightwatch duty. The housemaid hesitated and tried to conceal her panic, “The Donna has been in your room the entire time and never came out…”Xavier had an ominous feeling.“No,” he grunted before rushing toward his room.He went straight to the dressing room and parted the coats out of the way before reaching for a mechanism. There was still a faint scent of Grace’s perfume mingling in the air of the secret passage. It must be Jakob. He was the only one who knew about the secret passage.Ten minutes later, two of his men brought Jakob into the living room.He was h

When the boat docked on the island, the shimmering sea was reflecting the radial glow of the sun above. As soon as I hopped off the boat, my feet sank into a soft cushion of sand, which blanketed my toes with warmth. The heat seemed to surge into the depths of my heart, and I felt like crying.I wasn’t dreaming.I made it out.“Grace!” I heard a familiar voice and looked up abruptly to see Noah calling out from under a coconut tree only a short distance away. He was wearing a white shirt and looked tall and as striking as ever.He took off and ran to me.“You’re back… Just like you said you would.” He pulled me into a tight embrace. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”The heat of his body coursing through me reminded me that this was real. I could smell the salty scent of the sea and the warmth of the sun from him. It was nothing like the nauseating smell of cigars on Xavier. At this point, I could not hold back anymore and started to cry.“Noah… I missed you so much.”T

I turned and entered his dressing room, where I carefully examined every inch of the wall.Jakob told me this was where I could find the secret passage leading to the back door. It was a feature they intentionally left behind when reconstructing the manor to serve as an emergency escape.I traced my finger against a bevelled panel and felt it loosen ever so slightly. When I applied pressure, the panel caved in as expected, revealing a narrow entrance. It was only wide enough for one person to pass through at a time.I mustered my courage and went inside. Soon, I arrived at a steel gate which I unlocked with the key. After I followed the passage to the back door, I heaved a sigh of relief. Then, I went back the same path I had come and draped several large coats over the entrance to keep it hidden. I made sure that there would be no signs to tip him off. Now, all I had to do was play the role of a wife who had “forgiven” him. When he woke up, all he remembered was me agreeing to

It was dark by the time I returned to the manor. I heard heavy footsteps approaching my door soon after I entered.“Grace, open the door.”Xavier reeked of alcohol, so much that I could smell it through a closed door.I hesitated for a moment before getting up to open the door.I found him perched right outside the doorway, his figure swaying slightly as if he was having trouble keeping his balance. Several buttons of his shirt were undone while his tie hung loosely around his neck. His deep gray eyes were bloodshot and fixed intently on me.“You…” His voice came out terribly hoarse when he spoke, “Why aren’t you hiding from me anymore?”I stepped aside to let him in while answering curtly, “As if there is any use in hiding.”He staggered into the room while casually tossing a bottle of liquor he was holding to the floor. Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and pleaded with a desperate look in his eyes, “Grace, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have forced myself on you, and I shouldn’t

After leaving Annie, I did not return to the manor right away, nor did I seek out Jakob.I was getting worried because my period was twenty days late.At first, I figured it was hormonal since my emotions were all over the place, and I had been losing sleep lately. Now, though, a brazen idea came to my mind.I had the driver take me to a nearby public hospital that was relatively out of the way. After doing a blood test and taking an ultrasound, I waited for a gruelling half an hour that felt like eons.“Congratulations, you're pregnant!” With a smile, the doctor presented me with a report.I felt my blood turn cold.My hand instinctively reached for my stomach. Though it was still flat, I knew that there was a child whose blood ran with mine and Noah’s.Though this was not an ideal time to become pregnant, it also felt like a ray of hope. All my hesitation and fear dissipated when it occurred to me that I was with child.I had to get out. I had to take my child and Annie and
