A Warning

In a corner of the hospital parking lot, the stench of blood lingered stubbornly in the damp air.

Bruno leaned against a concrete pillar, breathing heavily.

Blood continued to seep from the wound in his left shoulder, trickling down his arm and pooling in a dark stain at his feet.

He released his right hand from where it had been pressing the wound and used the tip of his shoe to kick away a long knife lying near the closest man--its blade still smeared with his blood.

The three attackers lay sprawled on the ground, completely motionless.

Bruno grabbed a relatively clean jacket from the floor and struggled into it over his blood-soaked shirt, his movements slow and stiff with pain.

His eyes flicked to the overturned takeout box not far away, soup and food splattered across the ground, mixed with shards of broken glass.

He closed his eyes briefly, swallowing the sigh rising in his throat.

Just as he was about to turn away, his phone rang.

"How is it?" Liam's voice came through the line
