Mabella's POV

"You're awake."

Alfredo's voice was soft in the dark. His hand found the small of my back, warm and grounding. I turned toward him in that deep pre-dawn hush.

"I've been up for an hour," I said.

“Thinking?” he guessed.

I nodded. “The council. The claimant. Senna’s four.” I paused. “The mandate.”

He pulled me closer.

“You felt it just now,” he said. “Wolflina.”

“How do you always know?” I pressed.

“Your breathing changed,” he said. “Twenty minutes ago. Not the way you breathe when

I turned toward him in that deep pre-dawn hush."I've been up for an hour," I said.“Thinking?” he guessed.I nodded. “The council. The claimant. Senna’s four.” I paused. “The mandate.”He pulled me closer.“You felt it just now,” he said. “Wolflina.”“How do you always know?” I pressed.“Your breathing changed,” he said. “Twenty minutes ago. Not the way you breathe when you’re thinking. It was deeper.”I studied him, shadows across his face.“She’s been pushing at me since the hearing,” I said. “It’s getting stronger. Like she’s moving toward something, but I can’t see it yet.” Another pause. “Raven feels it too.”He nodded. “Yeah, he does.”“What does it feel like for you?” I asked. He lay quiet for a second.“Like standing right on the edge of something huge,” he said finally. “Knowing the person next to you was designed for it. And you’re meant to stand besi

Mabella's POV"Tonight," I said again, just to hear myself say it.Fred’s voice came through the door. "Both of them. Separately. They’re already on their way."I glanced at Alfredo. He met my eyes."Names," Alfredo called."Alpha Daren of the Westhold pack," Fred replied. "And Alpha Senna of the Ironvale pack."Alfredo froze."You know her," I pushed."Everybody knows Senna," he said, carefully. "She’s been Ironvale’s Alpha for fifteen years. Took over at twenty-two after her father died. She’s held it alone ever since." He paused. "Senna doesn’t show up for friendly chats. She doesn’t request meetings till she’s made up her mind, and usually she’s just here to deliver that decision." He locked eyes with me. "If she’s coming tonight, she’s not here to ask. She’s here to say.""And Daren?" I asked."He follows Senna. Has for a decade. Politically, wherever she goes, he goes right after. If she’s moving, he’ll be right behind."I stood up. "Daren first," I called to Fred. "Senna after.

Mabella’s POV“The mandate activated,” Serena said as soon as we stepped into her room. She was already perched on her bed, charter open in her lap, her finger marking a spot on the page. “Sit. Both of you.”We sat down. She set her gaze on me. “Your wolf pressed forward,” she said. “Not anxious. Not guarding. Just alert.”I nodded. “Yes.”She wouldn’t drop it. “Explain exactly what happened. Don’t leave anything out.”I took a second.“It felt… old. Like something ancient waking up and recognizing the present moment,” I said slowly. “Almost like Wolflina realized something had shifted before I did. She was reacting to a call I couldn’t hear.”Serena glanced down at the charter. “Page one-twelve. Read it.”She handed over the book. The translation was stiff, careful, but I got the idea. When the heir comes into full standing and the bloodline recognizes its territory, the wolf will wake to the mandate. This waking is not chosen. It is answered. The heir does not activate the protectio

Mabella's POV“Get Vida,” I told Fred.He was already on his way.Alfredo and I stood in the hall, just looking at each other. Neither of us wanted to say it out loud, but we both knew exactly what was sitting between us.“She went straight to the claimant,” Alfredo said quietly.“Yeah,” I said.“And she didn’t tell us,” he went on.“Yeah,” I repeated.“Why?” he pushed.I picked my words. “Because whatever she told him, she needed it to sound like it was coming from outside the pack. Somebody who wasn’t tangled up in all of this.” I looked him in the eye. “If it sounds like us, it sounds like negotiation. If it’s some private person with specific knowledge, it sounds like a warning.”“What specific knowledge?” Alfredo wouldn’t let it go.I glanced down the corridor where Fred had disappeared.“That’s what I want to ask her,” I said.Vida came down the hall fast, still wearing her healer’s coat, her gray hair coming loose. She saw my face, and I saw her expression shift—that subtle mov

Alfredo's POV“The original mandate,” Mabella said, her voice soft. She was still watching my mother. “Protection of the regional packs.”My mother nodded. “Yes.”“So the Veron claimant is filing against me? That’s a violation of the mandate itself,” Mabella went on, thinking it through out loud. “He’s saying the Ashborne heir threatens regional stability. But the law he’s invoking only exists because the Ashborne heir is regional stability.”My mother just watched her.“Yes,” she said.“He basically handed us the defense,” Mabella said.“He handed you the defense,” my mother corrected, a faint smile in her voice. “Wrapped up in his own petition.”Mabella’s gaze dropped to the table. She got that stillness I knew so well, the kind she gets when she’s working through something tough, turning it over until she sees every angle.I just watched her.Fred came back in—this time through the door, holding a sheet of paper. His face wore that look you get when something you just learned chang

Mabella's POV“Get out.”Heads turned my way.“Not you,” I said to Fred, Alfredo, and Serena. Caspian got my stare. “You. Out. Please.”Caspian glanced at Serena.“Go,” she said, not giving him a chance to argue. He left. The door shut. The four of us sat quietly. Fred still had the paper. The lamp burned on. Outside, the pack was celebrating the hearing, clueless that everything had flipped upside down in the east wing.“How many packs does the Ashborne ancestral range cover?” I pushed.Fred tried to be calm. “Seven territories. Crest’s one of them.”“So, six-pack Alphas outside our borders might have legal grounds under old law to treat my pregnancy as a territorial provocation," I said.“If the regional council accepts the claimant’s petition, yeah,” Fred admitted. “He needs a majority from the Alpha council.”“How many Alphas sit?” I jumped in.“Fourteen,” he said. “Including Alfredo.”“Alfredo doesn’t vote on his own pack,” I told him. “Thirteen then. He needs seven.”“Right,” Fr

Mabella's POV I stood before the council as Alfredo had sent for. It was days after I had settled in the pack, days after I had planned to remain in the pack and behave like one of them. Days after I had already made up my mind to stay beside him. After all, he was my fated mate. Many elders were
