Celine’s pov.

I don’t remember falling asleep. Not the second time.

The first time after Kaine found me, after he held me and carried me out of that awful place, it was fitful and broken. My body had given out before my mind had. But this time… this sleep had swallowed me whole. Heavy and dreamless. Like my soul had been waiting for permission to rest, and only Kaine’s arms had given it.

I woke slowly. My body was still sore, and my head ached like a dull, echoing drumbeat. But I was warm and clean. I was in his room, his scent wrapped around me, his shirt on my skin, and for a long time, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling.

Trying to believe I was really home. But the silence didn’t last. Because memories, like ghosts, don’t stay buried, they rise.

It began with the scratch of glass.

I had just finished training that morning. Matthias had pushed me hard, harder than usual, and every part of my body ached. I’d gone to the villa to shower, to breathe, to maybe nap on the couch an

Kaine’s pov. I wasn’t sure when I’d fallen asleep, but when I opened my eyes and the world was still dim and quiet, I knew two things for certain.First, Celine was still asleep, breathing slow and even, one leg draped across mine like she had no intention of letting go. Her bare skin was warm against me, a soft contrast to the cool morning air creeping in through the open balcony doors.Second, I’d actually said all of it. Everything! I’d told her she was my mate. Told her I wanted her as my queen. Hell, I’d begged her with my hands and mouth and every inch of my soul to believe in what we had.I turned my head slightly, just enough to look at her.Her lashes fluttered ever so faintly against her cheek, lips parted just a bit as she slept, her face blissfully unguarded. She looked peaceful for the first time in days. Maybe weeks. She’d been through hell. And I’d been helpless for too much of it.My eyes suddenly fell on her neck. There was a mark. A mark! Of course, I had claimed he

Celine’s pov. The moon was full again. I could see it from the wide windows of Kaine’s bedroom, its pale light casting silver shadows across the floor. The villa was quiet, hushed in that way the world gets when everything important is happening inside your chest instead of around you.I was curled up on the couch, knees drawn to my chest. My body had healed, the bruises and cuts long gone, but the ache inside me still hadn’t settled.I heard the soft tread of Kaine’s boots before I saw him. He entered the room without a word, eyes finding mine immediately. And just like that, my chest felt too full again. I hadn’t seen him since earlier in the garden. Since he’d said he would send for my mother. Since he’d looked at me like I was something ancient and breakable and terrifying, but still his.He didn’t ask if I was okay. He just walked over and sat beside me, close enough that our shoulders brushed. His warmth settled over me like a second skin.“I didn’t think I’d ever sit here agai

Kaine’s pov. Celine was asleep when I slipped out again. She looked peaceful, tucked beneath the blankets, her breathing slow and even. But peace was a lie. I knew the truth behind that calm, saw the flickers in her eyes, the hesitations in her voice, the way she’d watched the rose wither in her hand like she had willed it.She was trying not to be afraid. But I was. Not of her, but for her. There were old things in this world. Buried things. Magic wolves weren’t meant to touch. And somehow, they were waking inside her.The stone circle stood at the northern ridge of the territory, hidden among thick trees and jagged rocks. No wolf dared hunt near it. It had always been an eerie place, forgotten and avoided. Now I knew why. The stones themselves were enormous, each one twice the height of a man, weather-worn and blackened in places. Moss clung to their bases. Strange symbols had been carved into their surfaces, faded but not gone.Oscar followed behind me in silence. Even he didn’t t

Celine’s pov. The next morning, I woke with earth beneath my fingernails. I stared at my hands for a long time, lying in bed with sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains. The dirt was under my nails, caked into the creases of my palms. My knuckles were slightly bruised.I didn’t remember leaving the villa. Not again. I sat up slowly, pressing my hand to my temple. There was no pain. No headache or dizziness. I was alert, sharp, and fully rested. But the evidence was there. I’d gone back to the forest. Again. But why couldn’t I remember it? There was something unnatural in that forgetting. Like a dream pulled down into deep water.I swung my legs out of bed and walked barefoot across the wooden floor to the window. The morning was bright. Birds chattered in the distance. The guards below were in their usual positions, nothing seemed wrong. The world went on, as if nothing inside me was bending.By afternoon, I couldn’t sit still. I walked through every hallway in the villa. I ci

Celine’s pov. It started as a hum.Barely there at first…like the echo of a sound I couldn’t quite hear. I thought it was in my head, a residue of the nightmare Tess had wrapped around me like a shroud. But the more I ignored it, the stronger it became.A whisper beneath my skin. A ripple in my chest. Like a heartbeat that didn’t belong to me. By the fifth day in the villa, I couldn’t pretend it wasn’t real. I stood barefoot on the cool stone of the garden path, surrounded by the scent of roses and morning dew. The sun hadn’t fully risen yet, but the sky was blushing at the edges. Pale pink, gold-streaked.And still, I felt it. The hum was inside me. Constant. Gentle. But growing bolder. I pressed my hand against the center of my chest, just above where my ribs met, and closed my eyes. Nothing physically wrong, no pain, no wound, no fever. But something was… different. Something was awake.I opened my eyes and exhaled slowly. The steam from my breath curled like smoke into the dawn a

Celine’s pov. The first thing I remembered clearly was the scent of the sheets.Lavender and something earthier…pine, maybe. Comforting in a way I couldn’t explain. I’d woken in Kaine’s bed days ago, disoriented and aching in places I hadn’t known could hurt. But that pain had faded quickly, like most physical wounds did in wolves. Now, there was only stillness. Quiet. Too much of it.We had moved back to the villa, and ones again, I was surrounded by gardens, high stone walls, and a view of the forest that stretched for miles. Still, I hadn’t seen him since. The caretaker, an older woman named Lira, said he left the morning after he brought me back here. He hadn’t even waited for me to wake. She’d told me gently, her voice filled with warmth and the kind of calm that made me think she’d been doing this a long time. Taking care of broken things.“He left strict instructions,” she said that first day, pulling a blanket up over me. “You are to rest. Eat. Breathe. Nothing more.”I’d no

Kaine’s pov. The journey to Blackrock was long, but not unfamiliar. We rode through the wilderness in silence, the sky bleeding into a moody gray. The forests grew darker the farther we went, branches like skeletal arms reaching overhead, casting long shadows across the trail. No birds. No movement. Just the growl of the engine and the weight in my chest.Oscar drove, hands steady on the wheel, but I saw the tension in his jaw. We were both thinking the same thing…we didn’t know what we’d find in Blackrock, but it wouldn’t be safe. It never was.Blackrock had once been a fortress. Before that, a prison. And before that… something far older. Wolves didn’t speak of its earliest history. Not openly. Those who did often vanished. It had been sealed decades ago, after the last rebellion. Too many secrets inside. Too much power. But now we had the Council’s reluctant blessing, and their codes to open it again.“I keep thinking about that word,” Oscar said, breaking the silence as we passed

Kaine’s pov. The chamber hadn’t changed in centuries. Stone arches, wide stained-glass windows, and the ancient Wolf sigil emblazoned at the heart of the marble floor. The Council Hall was meant to be sacred, an eternal reminder of unity, strength, order.Today, it felt like a tomb.I entered with Oscar at my side, our boots echoing against the cold floor. Matthias followed behind, silent as ever, but his presence drew attention nonetheless. Old ghosts stirred when we walked together. Old loyalties, too. Some remembered what Matthias used to be. Others never forgave what he became.Twelve elders turned as one to face us. A circle of tradition and power, each member appointed by bloodline or deed. Elara, the High Seer. Dorian of the Iron Spine. Thorne, ever the skeptic, his fingers curled around the armrest of his chair as if itching to object before I’d even spoken.“Alpha King.” Elara’s voice was calm, laced with curiosity. “You summoned us. Urgently.”I didn’t waste time.“Tess use
