LOGINWhen I come to, I’m in my room on the bed. I looked around the room and discovered that I was alone. My mind travelled back to what happened as I tried to recall how I ended up here.
I remembered the solitary confinement and then the headmistress’ warning, my eyes widened again as I realised she had threatened to kill me much earlier than she planned, had I continued provoking her.
Ember, I was about to enter the dining room after her when my vision became blurry, someone caught me before I fell, someone…
Raphael?
I remembered his face being the last thing I saw but the image was blurry, or was that a dream, how did I end up here then or did he carry me here?
I was asking these questions to no one in particular. I had a slight headache and as I adjusted my position, my stomach began to grumble. I was still yet to have dinner, I had a feeling it was very late. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath and stood up from the bed.
Daphne was in solitary confinement and I never knew where Phoebe was.
I made my way to the door, leaving the room, I noticed the hallway was empty and quiet meaning everyone had gone to sleep. My stomach grumbled again causing me to groan. I had to eat something, I wanted to eat something.
I didn’t feel safe walking alone in the middle of the night but my hunger was driving me.
Would I be able to find food at this time? The dining room had probably been cleared by now, still I made my way there.
The silence was killing me, I truly wondered what time it was. I pushed at the dining room’s door and discovered it was open so I went inside, hoping to find some leftover food or anything.
“Why is there….” I stopped midway my speech as I noticed a figure at the centre of the room and his grey eyes turned to meet mine.
“Of course” I murmured as I found Raphael coincidentally sitting in the middle of the dining room alone.
He stares at me but doesn’t say anything.
“Were you the one who carried me to my room?”
“Would you prefer I say no?” He asked, causing me to scoff at him.
“And that’s how you thank someone that helped you?”
“I never asked you to,” I retorted.
“Noted” He said while nodding his head. I rolled my eyes and looked around the room. The whole place was already cleared, no sign of leftover food, nothing.
“Why are you here?” I turned to the rude boy.
“Not your business” He replied and I only nodded.
“I don’t sleep well at night,” He suddenly said.
“I wonder why” I replied sarcastically.
I began walking towards him and noticed his eyes narrow
“Three feet,” he warned.
“That didn’t apply when you caught me,” I reminded him. He only glared at me.
“Why did you collapse?” He questioned and as much as I wanted to be sarcastic, I genuinely didn’t know.
“I guess I was just tired” I sighed and sat at the table before where he was.
“Here” he said and tossed something towards me, I barely caught it before raising it to my face. It’s a sandwich.
I stare at it dumbfounded and pull it away from my face to look at him.
“Why?” I asked.
“Aren’t you hungry, you can give it back” He snapped.
I glare at him and stare at the sandwich pack,
“Thank you” I muttered and my stomach growled. I blushed in embarrassment.
I opened the foil and began to bite into it, as I took the first bite, it was like my hunger grew and I began to eat more.
Before I knew it, I had gobbled up the whole sandwich and sighed in relief while licking the sauce off my fingers.
I looked up to find Raphael staring at me.
“Monster” He murmured with a subtle smile, something I didn’t think could happen.
“I was hungry!” I snapped back, my cheeks turning red once more, I had ignored the fact that he was there and rushed the sandwich.
“I’m sure,” he mocked.
“What’s wrong with you?” I asked, he was very weird and I wasn’t sure what I felt of him.
Raphael only stares hard at me and before I know it, he is on his feet and he makes his way towards me, I stare at the weird boy sceptically, what was he planning to do? He stops at my table and plops down on the seat opposite me.
“It’s ridiculous that we are sitting on different tables when we are still three feet apart like this” He said and I stared at him in confusion.
“So you realise your stupid rule is ridiculous?” I scoffed. “Why even three feet, what…” I stop mid speech as Raphael stretches his hand across the table and wipes the side of my lips with his finger.
I blink twice and watch his finger retract back, stained with sandwich sauce and he cleans it against a kerchief. Before I can speak he throws the handkerchief at my face.
“Learn to eat properly, you’re not seven”
I still stare at him dumbfounded before my gaze travels to the handkerchief on my lap.
“You have issues” I snapped back at him, gaining myself. One minute he was kind, the next he was being rude.
“You are clearly the cause,” he added.
“I did nothing” I replied and took a deep breath.
“Why three feet, why do you bully me?” I asked, meeting his grey eyes.
“I don’t bully you”
“You do,” I retorted immediately.
He scoffed and stood up “There’s something about you Martins, I can’t place my finger on it yet but my gut tells me it isn’t good”
I swallowed hard, was he sensing that I wasn’t one of them, that I was human?
Daphne had mentioned that Raphael was the only one of his kind, could he somehow sense what people were.
When I looked up, his brows were furrowed and his eyes scanned mine hard.
“Your reaction just now proves I’m right” The friendliness in his tone had vanished.
“Goodnight Martins” He said then stomped out of the dining room, slamming the door behind him, causing me to flinch.
The next morning as I brushed my hair to go for assembly, my room door slammed open causing me to drop my brush and squeal a bit.“What the hell!” I shouted thinking it was Phoebe who came back drunk again but when I turned around my eyes widened.“Daphne!” I screamed and jumped on her, she caught me in a hug but almost immediately dropped me down.“You’ve caused me some serious trouble” She said with a small smile and her voice was badly cracked.“I’m sorry, what did they do to you?” I asked while examining her, in just a few days she had slimmed down, she had bruises and she reeked but I wasn’t telling her that yet.“Let’s just say, I wouldn’t be able to sing for a while” Hearing her say that made me frown deeper and I genuinely began to wonder what they had done to her.“Go for assembly, I need to have a deep bath, I’ll see you later” She said and I nodded, I squeezed her in a hug again and left the room.I quickly head to the assembly ground, where everyone is lining up. My mind g

“Avery, you’re safe okay” she assured, “Here” She handed me her gold key.“You can hold onto it, until we return safely," she said and I nodded and without thinking, I took a deep breath and jumped inside. Not long after Ember jumped inside too, closing the door and we were met with total darkness.“Hold on” I heard Ember moving but couldn’t see her, suddenly the place was illuminated as fire spewed from her mouth until a torch lit where we were. The place looked like some medieval dungeon. We walked down and saw different metal doors where we couldn’t even see who was inside.Ember touched each door closing her eyes and stopped at one.She opened her eyes and turned to me, “She’s here”I made my way to the door where Ember was and slotted in her golden key and sure enough the key opened the door.Ember held the torch at the door and I entered, I found a figure crouched down on the dirty ground and noticing the lights and footsteps, she looked up.A frown marred my face as I took in t
Lucian sat at the front seat and dropped his back on the desk, not even bothering to greet anyone. Didn't he have friends or his friends weren’t the type to be in detention.I hear footsteps coming from the back and Marie passes me and heads towards the front seat, particularly towards Lucian. She stops in front of him and plops down on his desk, pushing his bag aside, her uniform had ridden up and her fair thighs were showing.I couldn’t really make out what she was saying but he was responding and there seemed to be a whole conversation. She eventually nodded and left, walking back to her seat but she wasn’t smiling. The rest of the detention went on quite boringly and the teacher never came back, making me wonder who’s homeroom teacher was.I packed my things and my book of doodles which was all I was doing for the past three hours into my bag. Immediately after the time elapsed, Lucian walked out of the class and people began to leave one by one.I walked out of the class and some
I knew it, it was everything I expected and worse.I’d literally be anywhere else.It was loud and utterly disturbing.I heard a couple of laughs and then different forms of noises. I looked around to find an unbothered teacher picking a booger from his nose. I couldn't help but notice the stares that followed me. I walked towards an empty seat and then sat down.“Hey that seat is taken, find somewhere else” A voice said from behind me and I turned around to find a girl, giving me the stink eye. And her said eyes had slits in them. I would have argued but I didn’t like the look in her eye.“Hey Avery!” I heard someone shout my name and looked to find Jenna flashing me a sly smile“Jenna” I acknowledged and walked towards her, she pulled out a red lollipop from her lips and nodded towards the empty seat beside her.I sighed and sat down on the seat, immediately Jenna pulled her chair towards me, making a loud squeaking sound that made the unbothered teacher look up at her.“What has th
I made it to class and I’m late for the first time. Taking in a deep breath I push the door open and enter the class.“And that’s the reason why….” Mr Alistair stops as he notices my presence, he gives me a once over and returns to face the class. For some reason I felt hurt, there’s no usual longing in his eyes and he looked barely bothered.I kept my head low and began to walk to my seat, apparently Raphael had chosen the seat behind me as his new seat. His eyes met mine and I immediately looked away, I was scared of all of them. Just as I am about to sit down…“Miss Martins, you are late,” Mr Alistair commented.I looked up to meet his amber eyes that stared at me with an unbothered look. I swallowed the lump in my throat, was it because of our last interaction, the way I reacted and acted?“I am sorry sir, I overslept and…”“I do not wish to hear your excuses, it mustn’t repeat itself” He said to me and I simply nodded.I finally sit in my chair and breathe out.“And so the hold h
After dinner, my roommates and I began heading to the other block, along with some students, while others stayed behind. As we climbed down to the second flight of stairs, I couldn't help but stare into the hallway, all the lights were back on.“Walk fast” Daphne called in front of me and I doubled
“What,"What just happened?” I asked, my voice trembling and Phoebe scoffed.“She's a dragon of course” she rolled her eyes and my lips moved but no words came out. Daphne narrowed her eyes at me and suddenly grabbed my hands, pulling me towards the door and I reluctantly went with her while still
When I came out from the stall, the bathroom was empty, they had probably gone for dinner.I made my way to the halls, it was empty as well and I rushed over to my room, pushing the door open and scanning round. My roommates weren't in, it looked like everyone had gone for dinner, there was a small
I looked down at the paper in my hand, the rooms were on the third story.Once again I made my way through the hall and in front of my arch nemesis, the stairs. I looked around searching for an elevator but there were only stairs. I stared down in disbelief. It's the 21st century, why were there no
