TESSA

With all the chaos still unfolding inside, no one notices when I slip out. I head for the front of Dimitri’s hotel to wait for my ride, heels clicking against the pavement.

It’s colder than usual. Not that it matters — my phone starts ringing and warms me up just fine.

Mother.

Perfect. I answer, mostly because I want a reason to stay angry. And she delivers.

“Must you always be a disgrace?!” she screeches before I can say hello. “All I asked — all I asked — was that you attend Anastasia’s engagement party like a normal person! Meet a decent man! Smile, behave! And what do you do? You ruin everything! What did I do to deserve this? You’ll put me in the grave one day, I swear—!”

Oh, she’s mad mad — but not mad enough to yell in Russian. English is her scolding language when she wants to make sure I really feel it. Unfortunately for her, I’m fluent in “guilt trip.”

I close my eyes. Count to three. Then smile.

“Mother,” I say sweetly, “if you drop dead mid-tantrum, I’m the one stuck

  • Fake Dating My Ex's Favourite Hockey Player   Everything's Business

EMILIAOnce Liam and I hang up — him off to his team meeting to dissect their next opponent, me left behind with a heart doing pirouettes — I realise I no longer have an excuse to slack off.So I roll up my sleeves and dive into work.By the time the clock hits 6 PM, I feel like I’ve aged a year. My arms ache. My feet are furious. My hair smells like three different types of frosting.Honestly, I should really start thinking about hiring staff. It was easy running this place when the Becketts were basically my only regulars. But now? Ever since Liam started dropping by, word’s gotten out — and so have the fans. Hockey jerseys, custom cupcakes, suspicious giggling near the counter. I don’t mind. As long as they buy a treat or two, they can camp out all day for all I care.Someone even suggested I get a TV installed so customers can watch the Titans’ games live while they sip their overpriced lattes. I’ve been mulling it over. I mean, I can’t charge people to sit and stare at a screen..

  • Fake Dating My Ex's Favourite Hockey Player   Domestic Goddess

EMILIAThe best part about owning a bakery? I get to decide when we open. And today, I’ve decided that “later” is the perfect time — because my boyfriend, who should be getting ready for a team meeting in less than an hour, has hijacked my morning with a video call and zero shame. He’s propped against a pillow, bare-chested, sleep-creased, with morning light pooling over his shoulder like it’s just as obsessed with him as I am. His hair is a wet mess. His smile is lazy. I want to kiss him through the screen.“You should just ask her what the problem is,” Liam says, resting his cheek in his hand, watching me like I’m a sunrise. “Better than worrying your pretty little head over it.”I roll my eyes — mostly to stop myself from melting. “I do ask her. She just never answers directly.”He hums as I dip a strawberry into melted chocolate. “You know, this whole domestic goddess thing you’ve got going on right now is extremely hot.”“Please. You’ve seen me nearly set a toaster on fire.”“Sti

EMILIAI knock on the door to Tessa’s home office for what feels like the hundredth time. Still locked.Of course it is.I shift the tray in my hands — a small bowl of fruit, a plain oatmeal, a few slices of toast. Nothing fancy. Just something soft, light. Something she can’t argue with. She hasn’t eaten since she locked herself in there yesterday. I’m sure of it.“Tess,” I call gently. “I made you breakfast.”Silence.I wait, like maybe this time will be different. It isn’t.I sigh, resting my forehead against the door. When I first came back three weeks ago, I let myself believe her behaviour was temporary. That the Tessa I knew — stubborn, bright, always two steps ahead of herself — would bounce back. She’d followed me to the station, hadn’t she? Kept her promise. That had to count for something. But the longer I stay, the more I watch her unravel — quietly, steadily — the more I realise I might’ve come back to a stranger.I close my eyes and raise my voice just enough to be heard

ZANETHREE WEEKS LATERThe score buzzer screams. 3–2, final.Another goddamn loss.I slam my stick into the boards on my way off the ice. The blade snaps clean in half. Splinters fly. I don’t care.Chicago Blizzards vs. Detroit Forge. At home. A packed arena and we still managed to fumble the lead in the last seven minutes. It’s our third straight loss. We’re sliding hard. No chemistry. No structure. Everyone playing like they’ve never shared a line before. And yeah — maybe that’s because we’re not the team we’re supposed to be.Not without Stone. The name leaves a sour taste. I don’t even want to think it, let alone say it out loud. But his ghost’s in every shift we play. Every missed backcheck. Every puck we don’t clear. He’s the elephant in the damn locker room. He’s been suspended indefinitely. “Pending further investigation,” the official statement said. The league’s keeping it vague. The team’s been tight-lipped. But the boys? We know.Everyone knows.Emilia filed a police repor

EMILIAThere’s a beat. Then all hell breaks loose.“What?” Tuli snaps, voice cutting like glass.“What the fuck are you talking about?” Seth shouts, already stepping forward like he needs to physically shake the truth out of her.Liam doesn’t move. Doesn’t flinch. His face is carved out of stone.Jessica keeps going. Her voice wobbles now, but she doesn’t stop. “There was never anything between Liam and me. Not romantically. Not physically. I never even thought it was possible people would believe that Liam—” Her words trail off, shoulders curling in. “There was nothing like that. Ever.”Tuli’s hands tremble, but her mouth stays firm. “Jessica, what is the meaning of this? Don’t be ridiculous. Of course Liam is Rowland’s father. You’re his mother. You can’t just disown the poor boy—”“I’m not disowning him!” Jessica barks, turning on her like she’s been holding it in for years. “And don’t you dare act like I did this alone. If you want someone to blame, look at your husband. He manipu

  • Fake Dating My Ex's Favourite Hockey Player   Starry-eyed Romantic Reunion

EMILIAI hear her before I see her, but it doesn’t make a difference.Jessica Monroe knows how to take up space. Her short black hair is pulled into a careless bun, her face scrunched at something Seth says — until her eyes find Liam. Then she smiles. Bright. Effortless. Like she’s the sun and everyone else is just lucky to orbit her.She brushes off Seth’s hand like it’s nothing. He flinches, hurt clear on his face, but she’s already moving. Straight toward Liam.Only, he’s not looking at her. After a brief glance, his focus is on me. Locked.“Emilia—”“Don’t.” My voice lands like a slap. He deserves worse. No more secrets? What a joke. There was nothing between us? Bullshit. I’ve ended things? With what — a child in the picture? And he never thought to tell me. Not once. Not when I was falling for him. Not when I gave him everything. My time, my trust. My worst moments, laid bare. He knows the ugliest parts of me — and I don’t even get the basic courtesy of knowing he has a kid?The
