Knox's POV

My phone rings forty-five minutes into the drive. Maverick's name flashes on the screen when I stare at it.

I answer on the first ring, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tight my knuckles are white. “Tell me she's okay.”

“She's alive.” Maverick's voice is tense. “But Knox, she's in heat.”

The car swerves lightly as his words hit me. “What?!” My grip tightens on the wheel.

“Cassie. She's in heat. Full blown, mate-induced heat.” He pauses, taking a deep breath. “I have her at our place. In your room. It's the only thing keeping her stable right now.”

“Shit!” I curse under my breath, my foot pressing harder on the accelerator. The speedometer climbs past ninety. “How's that possible? She's human.”

“I don't know, man. But I'm looking at her right now and there's no mistaking it. Someone poisoned her drink, because I perceived it. But whatever was in that drink, instead of killing her, triggered something. It awakened something inside of her. You will see for yourse

Cassie's POV By evening, anticipation is already building inside of me.I can't focus on anything. My textbook sits open in front of me, some chapter about the nervous system that I should probably memorize for next week's test. But the words blur together into meaningless shapes. All I can think about is tonight. About sneaking over to Knox's place after Maya falls asleep and what will happen when I get there. My stomach flips with nerves and something else. Something that feels dangerous and reckless and completely unlike me.I'm not the girl who sneaks around. I'm not the girl who agrees to secret arrangements with guys who can't even call me their girlfriend. But apparently, I am now.“You've been staring at that same page for ten minutes.”I jump, slamming the textbook shut. Maya stands in the doorway, fresh from her evening class, eyebrow raised in amusement.“Just tired,” I mutter, avoiding her eyes.“Uh-huh.” She drops her bag and flops onto the couch beside me. “You sure you

  • Falling For The Alpha Hockey Player.    Chapter Sixty One

Cassie's POV My voice cracks as the questions leave my lips, despite already knowing the answers. Knox wants me desperately, just as I want him. But we can't be a real couple? He can't give me a real relationship like other girls I always see with their boyfriends?“Yes,” he says, something unreadable crossing his features. “That's insane,” I blurt out, shaking my head. “I know.” My lips part to speak, but no words come out. God! I should say no. I should walk away right now and never look back. “Cassie.” Knox cups my face, his thumb brushing across my bottom lip, sending a tingling sensation through my entire body. “You want this as much as I do. You can't stay away from me any more than I can stay away from you.” My breath catches in my throat because he's right. Because despite that he can't give me something real, I still want him. God help me, I still want Knox so much that I think I might be going crazy without him. “This is going to end badly,” I whisper. “You are going

  • Falling For The Alpha Hockey Player.    Chapter Sixty

Knox's POV The words hit her like a slap. I see it in the way she flinches, in the way her amber eyes go wide with unshed tears. My heart aches seeing her this way. Nyx is thrashing and clawing inside of me, asking to break free, but I can't let him. “A mistake,” she repeats, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yeah. You were out of your mind, I shouldn't have—” I stop, my jaw clenching so hard it aches. “It won't happen again.” “You are right. It won't happen again.” She takes a step back, tears pooling in the corners of her eyes. “Because I don't make the same mistake twice,” She spits. Then she turns to leave, but something inside me snaps. I can't let her walk away like this. I can't let her think she means nothing to me, when she is in fact everything I need. I vault over the barrier in one smooth motion, my skates hitting the concrete floor with a jarring thud. She spins around, her eyes wide. “What now?” I cross the space between us in two strides, backing her against

Knox's POV The ice feels different today. My blades cut through it smoother and faster. Every stride is effortless in a way it hasn't been in months. My muscles don't burn, my chest doesn't ache. Even my breathing comes easier. All because of her— Cassie. “Knox, you are on fire today,” Ronan yells from the bench. “Whatever you did in the past few days, keep doing it.” I roll my eyes, not even bothering to glance at him. If only he knew. I push harder, skating faster, trying to outrun the thoughts clawing in my mind and Nyx's constant snarling in my head. ‘Go to her. She needs us.’‘She doesn't need us,’ I mutter under my breath, passing the puck to Maverick. ‘She needs to stay away from us.’ ‘Liar! We need her. We are stronger because of her.’ He's right and I hate that he is. After claiming Cassie’s body, if not her soul, Nyx became stronger. The curse that's been killing me slowly for months, receded. It's not gone or cured, but it's manageable and bearable. Because sleepi

  • Falling For The Alpha Hockey Player.    Chapter Fifty Eight

Cassie's POV The living room door swings open at five in the evening. I am on the couch, pretending to read a textbook I've not actually absorbed a single word from because my mind is busy reeling with different thoughts. Maya comes in and relief washes over me instantly. “Maya!” I scream, already on my feet before I can even think of anything else. I cross the room in three strides and pull her into a tight hug before she drops her bag. “Whoa. Okay!” She laughs, patting my back awkwardly. “Miss me that much?” I pull back, searching her face. She looks fine, but tired. There are dark circles under her eyes like she didn't sleep well. But she's here, alive and okay. “I tried calling you,” I say, my voice coming out shaky. “Like a hundred times. You didn't answer.” “I'm sorry. My phone died.” She moves past me to plug it into the charger on the kitchen counter. “After calling you last night and couldn't reach you. God, I was worried sick, then I got caught up—” she stops, turni

  • Falling For The Alpha Hockey Player.    Chapter Fifty Seven

Cassie's POV The walk back to Maya's apartment feels like punishment, longer than it should. The morning sun is too bright for how I'm feeling right now. People are jogging past me, walking with their dogs, living their normal lives while mine seems to have been turned upside down in just a night. Each step away from Knox's house should make me feel better. It should make the anger burn hotter and the hurt easier to swallow. But it doesn't.Instead, that invisible thread just pulls tighter. Like my body is physically rejecting the distance between us and every cell in me is screaming to turn around and go back which is absolutely insane.I wrap my arms around myself, his shirt still clinging to my skin. I hate that part of me doesn't want to take it off.He took my virginity and left me alone in his bed like I was nothing. The thought makes my eyes sting, but I refuse to cry. Not over Knox Black. Not over some guy who clearly saw me as just another hookup. Another notch on his bedp
