KATHY

The third week inside Viktor's mansion was the longest week of my life.

I barely saw him in the house.

Most mornings, he had already left before I woke up. On the rare nights he returned before midnight, I'd only catch a glimpse of him from the top of the staircase before he disappeared into his study or bedroom without so much as a glance in my direction.

It was strange.

Not seeing him should have made my job easier.

Instead, the mansion felt empty, not being able to converse with him or stir up an argument.

Maybe it was what Natalia told him the other night.

Was he rethinking his decision? Was he avoiding me because of his sister-in-law?

Figures.

The security around the estate had doubled over the past week.

New guards stood at nearly every entrance and hallway. Even walking into the garden earned me suspicious looks. If I wanted to leave the property, someone wanted to know where I was going, when I'd be back, and whether I needed an escort.

It was suffocating.

I was supposed to be gathering evidence, but getting anywhere without being watched had become nearly impossible.

Thankfully, Anya wasn't home that afternoon.

Her nanny had taken her to the park, leaving me with a few precious hours to myself.

I grabbed my purse and headed for the one place that always brought me comfort.

The little café Gabriella and I had been visiting since college.

The familiar smell of roasted coffee beans greeted me the moment I stepped inside.

For the first time in days...

I relaxed.

I ordered my usual caramel latte and settled into my favorite seat by the window, watching strangers pass by outside.

No guards.

No marble hallways.

No Russian mafia boss.

Just... peace.

My peace didn't last for long.

"So... this is where you've been hiding."

Every muscle in my body stiffened.

I didn't even have to look up to know who the fuck was talking to me.

Daniel.

I closed my eyes for a second before slowly opening them again.

"What do you want?"

He offered the same smile that used to make my heart flutter but now it only irritated me.

"I've been looking everywhere for you."

"Congratulations." I said, taking another sip of my coffee. "You found me."

His smile faltered.

"Can I sit?"

"No."

He pulled out the chair anyway.

"I wasn't asking."

"I noticed."

He sat across from me as though he still belonged there.

"Katherine..."

"No."

"I haven't even said anything yet."

"You don't have to."

His shoulders slumped.

"I know I messed up."

"You cheated on me."

"I made a mistake."

"You made a choice."

"I think about you every day."

I laughed bitterly.

"Funny. You didn't seem to think about me when you were sleeping with my sister."

His face flushed.

"I didn't mean for any of it to happen."

I stared at him.

He actually thought that made things better.

"I was drunk that night on your birthday."

"You didn't look so drink to me"

"I wasn't thinking."

"You were thinking enough to take your clothes off."

"Katherine..."

"No."

He leaned forward desperately.

"I love you."

The words barely registered.

"And I love black coffee."

I despised black coffee.

"I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you."

"There isn't enough time in the world."

I stood, slinging my purse over my shoulder.

"We're done."

"Katherine, wait."

I ignored him and walked toward the exit.

Behind me, I heard his chair scrape loudly against the floor.

He was following me.

"Katherine!"

People turned to look.

I kept walking.

"I'm talking to you!"

"So am I."

I didn't stop.

"Leave me alone."

"I just need five minutes."

"You already had two years."

His footsteps grew closer.

"Katherine, please."

"No."

"I can change."

"I don't care."

He reached out and grabbed my wrist and I froze. My pulse quickened.

"Let go."

"Not until you listen."

People were openly staring at us now.

A mother slowed her pace while walking with her child.

Two teenagers stopped talking altogether.

Heat rushed to my face.

I hated being the center of attention.

But most of all...

I hated Daniel.

"I said..." My voice dropped dangerously low. "...let go."

Instead, his grip tightened.

I was going to flip this man to the ground if he didn't let go off me in the next 3 seconds.

"Kathy..."

Just as I was about to twist my hand in his and flip him to the ground a sleek black SUV rolled silently to the curb beside us.

The rear passenger door opened.

A pair of polished black shoes touched the pavement first.

Then long legs.

Then six-foot-four of perfectly tailored charcoal suit.

Viktor.

He adjusted the cuff of his sleeve before lifting his eyes.

They landed on my hand where Daniel was holding me.

Then they landed on Daniel.

His eyes were cold. He looked like he would kill Daniel right there and then.

He started moving towards us slowly.

Daniel finally released my wrist.

"Who the hell are you?"

Viktor ignored him completely.

Instead, he stopped in front of me.

"Zayka." His voice was softer than usual. "Are you alright?"

I nodded before I could stop myself.

Daniel frowned.

"Katherine?"

Viktor finally looked at him.

"You've embarrassed her long enough."

"And who are you supposed to be?"

Without answering, Viktor slipped one arm around my waist and drew me effortlessly against his side.

The warmth of his body seeped through my blouse.

I held my breath.

I wanted to step away from Viktor's hold. I wanted to tell him he couldn't hold me like that.

But I didn't. I stayed glued to him. His hands on my waist was sending hear to my centre.

Daniel looked between us, utterly confused.

"What is this?"

"My girlfriend and I are having a conversation."

I couldn't help it.

I snorted.

"Ex-girlfriend," I corrected.

Daniel ignored me.

His eyes remained fixed on Viktor.

"Are you two together?"

Viktor's expression never changed.

His hand remained firmly at my waist.

"Yes."

Daniel blinked.

"Yes... what?"

Viktor tilted his head slightly.

"She is my woman."

  • Falling For The Mafia   29: The Gala

KATHY 3 days later we were back in the US. I was very glad to be back. Being attacked wasn't part of the vacation specifications and I didn't like that very much even though I had caught the rat. Viktor had killed him without even thinking twice. Would he do the same to me when he finds out who I really am? I had better start making escape plans just in case. The drive back to the mansion somehow felt heavenly. Three cars, Viktor and Romanov in one, Natalia and Anya in the other and I in the last car. It was peaceful. I looked at my arm which had healed enough that I no longer needed a bandage, though the scar was still there. I would have to wear long sleeve shirts to visit Nana. It would be hard to explained that my life was at risk at my employer's home. The car I was in finally came to a stop last. Anya and Natalia had already gone inside while I walked behind Viktor who was many steps away from me. The moment I stepped on the foyer, I saw Zuri. "Kathy" he gre

  • Falling For The Mafia   28: A Rat

KATHY"Call the doctor."Viktor's voice was calm, but everyone moved immediately.Romanov gave a short nod before disappearing down the hallway.I looked down at my arm. The adrenaline had worn off, and the burning pain was becoming harder to ignore. Blood had soaked through my sleeve, staining my shirt.About 15 minutes later, the doctor arrived. He cleaned the wound, stitched the cut, and wrapped my forearm in a neat white bandage."It isn't deep," he said. "You'll be sore for a few days, but you'll be fine. I'll give you some painkillers"As soon as he finished, Viktor looked at me."Go get your things."I frowned."My things?""We're leaving."I stood up to leave but Anya wouldn't let go. So we both went into my room together and I packed my bags. I didn't leave anything behind. We also went to Anya's room and picked some of her clothes and stuffed toys inside her school bag and we both went downstairs.Viktor took one look at my bag and back at my face.I shrugged. There was no w

  • Falling For The Mafia   27: Under Attack

KATHYI knew something was wrong the moment Viktor said we were leaving the country. "A vacation" was what he called it. Although the few days I had been here had been beautiful so far, something just didn't feel right. I could feel it. I wish I could just know what was happening. But my best guess was that the Mafia was under attach. The security around Viktor had doubled since we'd arrived. Romanov was constantly on the phone. Guards rotated shifts more frequently than before, and Viktor himself rarely relaxed, no matter how calm he appeared.Which made it all the more reason to believe that they were having some kind of fight. Would running away for a week really protect us? That afternoon, I wandered through one of the quiet hallways, hoping to clear my head, because something just kept nagging at me.I heard voices through a half-open door."...I've told you before."It was Viktor's voice.I stopped involuntarily.I wasn't trying to eavesdrop or anything.I had every intent

  • Falling For The Mafia   26: Dangerous Asset

VIKTOR I hadn't stopped thinking about yesterday. It was becoming a problem. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Katherine diving into the pool without a hint of hesitation. The moment she came back out of the water in her swim suit, I knew all hope were lost for me. I wanted her. Beautiful. Dangerously beautiful. I let out a quiet sigh and rubbed a hand over my face. I had meetings to think about. A war brewing back in New York. Shipments that needed rerouting. Enemies who wanted my head. Instead... I was thinking about Katherine. Pathetic. I left my room and walked down the hallway toward hers. Just as I was about to knock, I heard laughter. Not just laughter. Her laughter. "...Gabby, stop!" she giggled through the phone. "No, I'm serious!" She laughed again. "I am not blushing!" A smile threatened to form on my lips. It disappeared the moment I realized I was smiling because of a woman talking on the phone. Ridiculous. I knocked o

  • Falling For The Mafia   25: Lake Como

KATHYI had never been on a private plane before. The moment I stepped into Viktor’s private plane I immediately realized we lived in twice completely different worlds. The cabin looked more like a living room in a 5 star hotel than an airplane. The whole seats where made of black leather. And everything else looked just as expensive.I sat on one of the seats at the back, pretending like this was all normal to me but it wasn’t.Anya had no problem at all though. She bounced on the seat beside me like she had been doing that all her life, which I was sure she was.She looked at me smiling then she eagerly grabbed my hand and started showing me around while Viktor discussed something with Romanov near the front area.I watched them for all of two seconds before turning my attention back to Anya. I already knew something was wrong the moment he said we were going on vacation. I just didn't know what.Nana wasn’t happy about me leaving the country when I told her I wouldn’t be around for

KATHY"You're smiling."Gabby narrowed her eyes at me as we stepped out of the boutique, shopping bags hanging from both our wrists."I'm not""You've been smiling for the last five minutes.""I have not"She folded her arms."You're thinking about a certain grumpy Mr. Expensive.""I absolutely am not."She gave me a look that screamed liar.I chuckled lightly trying to get her to stop talking but before she could tease me again, I casually glanced at the reflection in a nearby shop window. There they were. Two men.One pretending to study a display of watches. The other scrolling through his phone.Neither of them was interested in shopping. They were interested in me, it was too easy to tell.I almost laughed."What?" Gabriella asked."Nothing."I kept walking."Just... don't look behind you."She immediately tried to look behind her.I grabbed her arm."I literally just told you not to."Her eyes widened."Someone's following us?""Two someones.""Oh my God.""Relax.""They could b
