CALISTA

“I do not know what you mean.” I stuttered, forcing my hand out of his grip. Mikhail stared at me in silence. Slowly, his eyes fell to my lips and he did not move.

“Say that one more time.”

I gulped, trying to swallow the dryness in my throat as my heart slammed heavily in my chest.

Oh God! I am going to have a heart attack!

I clenched the furniture beside me as my mind started thinking of how to get out of this situation. I knew from the seriousness in his eyes that repeating my words would not do me any good.

He was ready to fuck me up.

Mikhail’s eyes lifted to mine. Then his fingers tightened around my wrist, squeezing. Pain shot up my arm and my brows twitched slightly, but I bit my lips to stop myself from making a sound.

Who knew what he was going to do?

He leaned closer, his face now only inches from mine. I could feel his breath on my lips.

“Say it again,” he said quietly.

My heart was beating so fast I was sure he could hear it.

His eyes suddenly moved away from me to the spot behind the portrait, and at that moment my eyes widened in realization.

He knows.

“I am sorry,” I started, my lips trembling, but immediately those words left my mouth, the corner of his lips twitched slightly.

“So you saw it,” he muttered, finally letting go of me.

Wait. He did not know I saw it before?

My hand fell to my side as I stood there in shock. Mikhail turned around, his back facing me. His hands lifted to grip his hair, his back muscles flexing behind the black singlet as he exhaled sharply.

“God, Calista,” he hissed.

I gulped nervously, slowly risking a glance over my shoulder, and my eyes widened when I saw the knife he had given me placed on top of the shelf beside the portrait.

He was looking at the knife, not at the portrait. So what did he mean by there were dangerous things with consequences?

I turned my head back to him. “Ah!” I flinched when I saw him standing right in front of me again. I did not even hear him move.

He reached down and grabbed my hand, yanking me along with him.

“What are you doing? Let me go!” My heart quickened in fear as he pulled me effortlessly out of the room, his grip firm around my wrist.

What was he going to do with me? Was he going to silence me?

My legs hurriedly climbed down the stairs to keep up with his speed, and soon we were heading to the dining room.

“You are here. It took you ten minutes just as you said.” Eleanor’s voice sounded in front of us, and I tilted my head past his broad shoulder to see her.

She was sitting at the table with a mug halfway to her mouth. Underneath her left eye was a Hello Kitty bandage. She must have hurt herself earlier.

Her eyes moved from him to me, scanning me up and down. She set her mug down and stood up, the chair scraping the floor behind her.

“Oh, child.” She walked past the table towards me. Mikhail let go of me and walked towards the coffee machine at the other end. Eleanor grabbed my shoulders and pulled me into a hug. “Thank goodness you are safe. I thought the worst had happened to you.”

Her hand rubbed my back as she breathed heavily, while me on the other hand, my eyes were on that man's arms.

I had never found the arms of a man attractive until I met Mikhail. He grabbed the brown mug, his long fingers brushing against it, and slowly he lifted it upwards and my eyes followed shamelessly.

With such tenderness, I wonder how those fingers would taste in my mouth while he…

I snapped out of my daze when I saw him looking at me. He had a smug smile on his face as he gave me the “I am irresistible, I know” look. I snapped my head in the other direction, my face heating up.

The hell?

How could someone change from being aggressive a moment ago to being a total jerk?

“What is wrong, Cal? You are heating up.” Her voice sounded in my ears, and that was when I remembered I was still being hugged by her.

I pushed her away from me, and she stumbled backwards in shock.

Clearing my throat, I said, “I am fine.”

I sneaked a look at Mikhail and noticed he was not looking at me, but I could see the corner of his lips slightly lifted like he knew exactly what I was doing. I quickly looked away.

I cannot appear like a child before him. I am an adult!

“You do not look fine,” she muttered, walking towards me, but I moved back. “Your face is as red as a tomato.”

I clicked my tongue in annoyance. “I said I am fine. Look.” I swung my arm, turned around and gave her a big smile. “My teeth are complete and my jaw is not dislocated. I do not have a bandage on.”

Speaking of bandages.

I remembered Mikhail getting shot. I glanced at him and this time he was looking at me while drinking from the mug, his legs crossed over the other as he rested against the counter.

He lowered the mug halfway, his eyes never leaving mine. I glanced down at his chest but saw nothing.

Hmm. That is strange.

“Calista? Are you listening to me?”

“No,” I blurted out. My eyes widened and I snapped my head to her. “I mean yes. Yes, I am listening.”

God, I cannot stay around this man. He is trouble.

“Okay?” Eleanor nodded slowly before smiling, then glanced at Mikhail. “We have something to discuss with you.”

This time, Mikhail set down the mug and moved towards us. I frowned, noticing the change in atmosphere.

Did someone die from the attack?

Was it someone I know?

She gently pulled a chair back and asked me to sit. After that, she returned to hers, smiling at me.

“Did someone die?” I asked, glancing at the two of them.

“Goodness, no,” Eleanor gasped, and Mikhail simply stared at me. “No one died.”

“So what is this about?” I demanded.

She glanced at Mikhail, then back at me, and for some reason that subtle movement from her made my stomach twist in unease.

“Cali, your stepfather and I have decided to have you live with us until we know what is happening.” She smiled widely as though that was the happiest news in my life. “We noticed you had plans to settle at Sera’s apartment, but that will not be too safe.”

She reached across the table and held my hand. “Mikhail here will be your new guardian. He will watch over you and ensure you are protected twenty four hours every day.”

The bloody fuck?!

CALISTA“So… are we going to do the introduction?” I asked, twirling my pen. Katrina's head lifted from the book she was reading to look at me; her brows lifted slightly.“We already did that.” Someone cut in before she could reply. I faced them. “My name is Marcus, and he is Lucas, my best friend. We are already on this program together.”“Oh, I'm—” I extended my hand for a handshake, but a female appeared before me, taking my hand.“Calista.”My brows shot up. How does she know my name?“Um… you are?”“I'm Fara,” she smiled at me.“Oh.” My mind spun in circles as I wondered if I had heard that name before, but nothing came to mind. “It's nice to meet you, Fara.”“Same. Don't be too puzzled. I learned your name from Mrs. Parker's lips and your ID hanging around your neck.” She pointed at my chest, and I lowered my head to see that indeed it was.Oh, lord. I'm not used to this.We settled around a table at the far end of the company's cafeteria, discussing how our day went. Fara seems

Enjoy spending some dollars on your car door.” I stared at the expression on his face in satisfaction before marching toward the company.I hurriedly climbed the short stairs before making it inside the entrance. My gaze swept around the people walking about, each one of them having their ID card hanging around their neck.I walked past the receptionist and got inside the elevator along with ma

CALISTA“Which hospital is she in?” The words slipped out of my mouth the minute I got down the stairs. My eyes went to Mikhail, who was going through something on his phone, and in his left hand was a newspaper. He looked up from the phone, his eyes settling on me before moving behind me. I didn't need to turn to see what he was looking at.“You're awake.” He ignored my question, setting down his phone and the newspaper on the table. “I thought Eren said her body needs more rest?” His brows shot up as he glanced past me to Eleanor.“Yes, but for now… let her do the minimal things.” She answered, walking past me to the table.Mikhail's eyes moved from her and landed on me, and for some reason, I felt the scolding in his eyes.“What?” I snarled at him, my fists clenched beside me, and I wanted to punch him.He sighed softly, rubbing his face. “Now that she's awake, Eleanor, what next?”Eleanor didn't answer immediately, her eyes on something in the newspaper. She dragged it to herself,

CALISTA“M-Mihail?” My teeth clattered as I stared at the body far away from us. “Y-you hit her. She's not moving!”“H-hey, hey.” He ran over to me as my legs gave way beneath me. He caught me before I could hit the floor and covered my eyes with his hand, pressing my head to his chest. “S-she's not dead.”My body shook violently as coldness seeped into me. H-he hit her.Is she dead?Dread crawled through me at the thought of witnessing a murder scene. Why would he do that?“Let me go.” I lifted my hand to push him away, but it fell to the floor. I struggled to lift it again, but it fell limp beside me.Mikhail hugged me tightly, his heart beating heavily against my ear. “It's okay.” His muffled voice followed. My teeth sank into my flesh, and just as I was about to speak, a voice echoed from the parking lot.“Calista…huh? What happened here?” Footsteps approached us, and I didn't know where the strength came from, because one minute I was wrapped in Mikhail's embrace and the next, I

CALISTA“Here is your order.” Kat placed the wine on the table. “Call me if you need anything. I'll be over there.” She glanced briefly at both of us before leaving, returning to her original spot.I stared at the table we were sitting at, at the far end of the bar, and sighed softly, pressing my forehead. I had completely forgotten the reason I was here.“Is she someone new?” Sera asked, pushing one of the glasses toward herself.“Yeah,” I answered, but didn't say anything after that.Nodding, Sera mouthed an “oh” before bending down to sip her wine, and her eyes widened slightly.I expected her to say something about the wine, but she didn't. Instead, she removed the straw from the glass, dropped it on the table, and gulped the contents of the glass in one go.“The hell?” My brows shot up, but I said nothing. She cleaned her mouth with her arm and turned to where Katrina was writing down an order.“Another one!” she yelled, and Kat's head lifted from what she was doing to face us. S

CALISTA“Cal.” Sera's voice trembled from the speaker. “I never knew he was the man you kept telling me about. If I had known he was your stepfather… I would have created a distance between us.”“You never sent a picture of how he looked. All you've talked about is your hatred towards him and how you never wanted to be in his life.” She let out a shaky breath and continued. “I will never do something that will destroy the precious bond we have together. So… please, I beg you to forgive me.”If it were other times, I would have done so.I stared at the phone on the dressing table in silence. After a while, I turned and walked to the wardrobe. Opening the doors, my eyes skimmed through the dresses, and I picked one, walking over to the bed and throwing it there.“Let's meet tonight,” I said, walking to the dressing table and pulling one of the drawers. Inside was a key. I grabbed it and closed the drawer. “This isn't something we can talk about over the phone.”“O-okay, where is the pla
