DANTE'S POV

It felt like I was seeing her for the first time.

What I saw was a girl who had seen too much pain and still carried the pieces like shrapnel in her chest.

I pulled back slowly, hands curling into fists at my sides. Disgust burned at the edges of my skin, not at her, but at myself. What the hell was I thinking? Just one taste and I’d feel better? Like she was some drug I needed to flush out of my system?

My chest felt tight, like someone had wrapped wire around my ribs and kept twisting.

She whimpered in her sleep and curled deeper into herself. I watched her for another second before I forced my eyes away and moved toward the mess she had made.

The bottle lay on its side, mostly empty, amber liquid staining the rug. Her discarded glass was cracked where it had hit the table too hard. I gathered the pieces, set them aside, and started clearing up, something I hadn’t done for anyone in years.

That’s when I spotted it. Her freaking phone.
