Lilyâs POV
My fingers rubbed on my lips, as I kept on rolling in bed, finding it hard to sleep. I kept on thinking about the kiss. Why did Darius kiss me? Was he remembering?
The way his wolf reacted to me, the way his fingers brushed my skin like he knew me, the way he kissed me.
I was glad and sad about it at the same time. What if he happened to reject me again?
No, maybe I just had to avoid him, instead of getting myself hurt a second time.
I wouldnât be able to survive it.
The morning came too soon, and I forced myself to act like nothing happened.
The halls were silent as I made my way toward the kitchen. The sun had barely risen, and most of the palace was still asleep.
I exhaled in relief. This was the only time I felt at peace before the chaos of the day began, but my relief didn't last long because the moment I turned back, I collided with someone.
Hard. I stumbled back, the basket slipping from my grasp as the contents inside it fell out.
"Not again! Watch where you're going, you clumsy rat!"
Seleneâs sharp, high-pitched voice rang in my ears.
I looked up and nodded my head.
She crossed her arms, her lips curling in disgust. "Are you deaf too? I said "watch where you're going!"
"Iâm sorry," I stammered, quickly bending down to gather the herbs. "I wasnât looking but I will be very careful next time."
"Tch," she scoffed. "Of course, you should m. Filthy servants and never doing anything right."
I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing myself to stay silent.
It wasnât worth it but as I tried to walk past her, my body brushed hers and a low growl slipped from her lips, making me freeze. She hated body contacts or maybe it was only when I was involved.
Panic coiled in my stomach.
I needed to leave. Now.
But before I could move, she yanked her hand away as if I had burned her and glared down at me with seething rage.
"You dirty swineâŠ"
I rose to my feet quickly, clutching the basket to my chest. "Iâm sorry," I said again, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Sorry?" She scoffed. "You still do not know your place here! I might have to teach you a bigger lesson."
I swallowed. "No, my lady."
She tilted her head, studying me with narrowed eyes. "Hmph. Get lost. I doubt lowly things like you would understand status even if it slapped you across the face."
I felt the heat of humiliation creep up my neck.
I had spent years being spoken to like this. Beaten, ignored, looked down upon. I was used to it.
I muttered under my breath, "how unlucky can the day be for me?"
It was soft. Barely audible but she heard it.
Her sharp blue eyes flashed dangerously, and before I could react, she lunged at me, her hand raised.
"You insolentâ!"
I braced for impact but the slap never came.
A powerful force came into the room, filling the space with a suffocating dominance.
"Donât you dare!"
Tension filled the air.
I opened my eyes just in time to see a large, strong hand wrapped tightly around Selene's wrist, halting her mid-swing. It was Alpha Darius.
His grip was strong, his silver-gray eyes filled with unspoken fury.
The woman gasped. "D-Dariusâ!"
His gaze turned toward me, then back to her.
"Explain," he commanded coldly. âWhy did you want to hit her?â
She hesitated, obviously thinking of a lie to tell. "She insulted me first, baby! She was rude to me, so I was only putting her in her place!"
Dariusâs jaw ticked. His fingers tightened around her wrist, making her whimper.
"Sheâs a servant," he said, his voice eerily calm. "And you are my Luna. In this pack, servants are not treated like animals. You were supposed to come to me and make a report."
Selene frowned, eyeing me. "Why? You know who I am, Darius. I am your Luna and that gives me the right to put any servant in their place."
Dariusâs face remained unreadable. "Don't forget that you have not been crowned yet. Anything can happen.â
She blinked. "W-What?"
"You heard me," he said, releasing her wrist. "This should never repeat itself again, have I made myself clear?â
Seleneâs expression didnât change. She was ready to challenge him. âAnd what if I refuse?â
"Do not start a war with me," he cut her off.
Her face twisted with shock. "Darius, you are being unfair, picking a maidâs side over your womanâ"
"I am an Alpha of this Pack too,â he reminded her flatly. "Or have you conveniently forgotten?"
Selene opened her mouth, then closed it again, her face turning pale.
"B-ButâŠ"
"Have I made myself clear, Selene?" Darius said darkly, his aura pressing down on her like a crushing weight.
Tears welled in her eyes.
She turned to me, her eyes blazing with fury, as if I was the one to blame but before she could say another word, Darius stepped between us, blocking her view of me completely.
Selene angrily turned on her heels and stormed out of the hallway.
Silence followed and I barely breathed.
Then Darius turned to me, his piercing silver eyes locking onto mine. For a long moment, he just stared, making my heart pound.
I opened my mouth to say something, to thank him, maybe, but before I could, he spoke first.
"You," he said.
I stiffened. "Y-Yes, Alpha?"
"Come to my chambers tonight."
My breath hitched.
His chambers?
I stared at him, stunned. "IâI donâtâ"
"That wasnât a request," he said smoothly. "It was an order."
Then he turned and walked away, leaving me standing there with my heart racing and my mind spinning.
My thoughts spun in circles. What did he want from me? Was it about the kiss? Was he going to question me? Punish me?
I clutched the basket tighter to my chest, as if it could steady my racing heart.
I made my way to the kitchen like a ghost, and sank into my usual corner, behind the shelves of herbs and spices, silently sorting the ones I had collected earlier. My fingers trembled as I worked, but I didnât stop. Work distracted me but no matter how hard I tried, my thoughts kept drifting back to Darius.
What if he remembered everything?
That night that tore everything apart. That night when everything had gone horribly wrong. Or maybe it wasnât about the past at all. Maybe it was about Selene.
"Lily," a soft voice called, pulling me from my thoughts.
I looked up to see Mira, who was smiling at me. "Are you okay? You look like youâve seen a ghost."
I opened my mouth, then closed it. What could I even say?
"Iâm fine," I lied.
She raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "I heard there was a commotion in the hallway. Something about Selene trying to hit someone?"
I hesitated before nodding. "It was me."
Miraâs eyes widened. "Goodness, are you alright? Did she hit you?"
"No." My voice dropped. "Darius stopped her."
"Darius?" Mira repeated, looking stunned. "As in⊠Alpha Darius?"
I nodded again.
There was a long pause, then Mira leaned in closer, whispering, "And what did he say?"
"He told me to come to his chambers tonight."
Her jaw dropped, and she quickly glanced around to make sure no one else had heard. "Lily, are you serious?"
I nodded slowly.
Her brows furrowed. "Thatâs unexpected. Do you think he suspects anything? About who you really are?"
My heart skipped a beat. "I donât know."
Mira reached out and touched my hand. "Whatever happens, be careful, especially with Selene who seems like she is watching your every move."
I knew she was right. Selene had already been seething after what happened. She wouldnât forget this. And if she ever found out anout the kiss with Alpha Darius, sheâd destroy me.
She finally left and after a lot of thoughts on whether to go or not, I decided to just work.
Evening came and I was still yet to make a decision but my legs already made their decision.
I was now standing in front of his chambers, and my heart suddenly thudded so loud, then with a deep breath, I raised my hand and knocked.
The door creaked open from the inside and there he stood.
Darius.
âYou came late,â he said quietly.
I swallowed. âSorry Alpha, I had a lot of work to get done today.â
He looked
at me for a while and stepped aside. âCome in.â
And just like that, I stepped into the lionâs den.
Lily's POVI had never realized how extensive the cave system was, it seemed to penetrate deep into the mountainside, a gullet big enough to swallow us all if some giant beast had freakishly evolved to munch on humans. They had borne me through several apartments of a very modern aspect, placed me on a wooden bedstead somewhat of the Posture of our Field beds, and left me in a large room, where a few small Stones an Inch or two in length and breadth served as windows, within the space of ordinary panes, and by them I knew when it was day or night.Theyâd taken off my gag when we were deep enough that thereâd be no one to hear my shouts, however the ropes that bound my ankles and wrists were tight enough to cut off circulation. I was sitting against the cold stone wall while they were getting ready for whatever they were going to do with me."The best site," the Girl said critically, surveying the cave. "Remote, difficult to get to, and the local fauna will dispose of any... specimens.
Darius's POVThe war room had turned into a command center within hours of finding Lily gone. A map of the terrain had consumed all available space, pinned with colored markers to show areas that had been searched, potential hideouts, and the last places where our searchers had been. In the middle was Captain Marcus standing on the table, moving the army around in the woods by directions over the air.âReport from Team Three,â he said, reading from a message that had just come in. âThey picked up the tracks of the cart for about two miles to the northeast and then lost it at Rocky Creek. The soil gets too hard to accept a wheel print beyond that.â"Agreed," I responded stoically, looking over the map and the pockets of the grid we had already checked. It was now six hours after we realized Lily was gone, and we had sent out every available guard in neatly organized search patterns, yet nothing but stone-cold trails and false leads had been found.âWhere are Teams Four and Five?â Becau
Chapter 193Siennaâs PovâHey man, can we talk?âAshton called out from a distance.Adrian was still holding onto me. He responded to him âIâll see you in a few. Just give me some timeâ.Adrian rubbed my hair and whispered into my ears âYouâre gonna be okay, alright? Go in and take a shower okay? Youâre sweating Siennaâ.The preparations continued in earnest. Just when we thought that everything was working perfectly, we woke up to a very disturbing situation. That morning, as I got out of my bed, my phone notifications beeped.. Still in my sleepy state, I yawned and sulked âWho the hell is that? Itâs too earlyâ.I struggled to get out of the bed and into a sitting position. I reached for my sidestool, accidentally knocking the phone from the stool to the floor. âFuckâ.I stood up and reached for the phone on the floor. When I successfully carried it, I raised it to my face and pressed the power button by the side. The news my eyes saw made my heart leap very fast almost out of my c
Darius's POVMargaret's frightened confession had brought to light the extent of the plot against Lily, but not its author. Was not willing to give under even the full weight of my Leading. Goodbye Ceceliaâ and that is when it happened, on her sweet lips, a mutual name was spoken. Her allegiance was as admirable as it was maddening.âPut her in the dungeons,â I'd told Captain Marcus. âNo visitors, no contact with anyone until she feels like being more open with facts.âBut by the hours after Margaret was arrested, my wolf was getting restless. The uncompleted mate bond between me and Lily was eerily silent, for once that silence was welcome; the voices in my head coming from it were a constant torment. "I need to tell her," I said out loud in my empty den, the words clawing the back of my throat like shattered glass. âWhatever Iâve done to her, I cannot stand by and let her be killed by someone else while I cower like a craven.âThe very idea of going to find her felt as if I had bee
Darius's POVWhen I entered, the grand hall seemed like a tomb, packed with drawn pack faces, their very lives contingent upon my ability to step up and lead them through the crisis. Captain Marcus was next to the head table on one side and Dr. Matthews and three senior pack members were on the other side, expressions grave as they spoke about the hunting accident that had taken three of our own.I straightened my spine and stitched firmness into my voice as I neared, but each step felt like trudging through quicksand. The defective mate bond thrummed with Lily's rage and determination, and something else I didn't recognize, something that made my wolf itching and jittery under my skin.âReport,â I snapped, trying to sound more authoritative than I actually was.The three hunters had been chasing down a rogue bear by the eastern border, started Captain Marcus, his grizzled face pinched in distress. âThe animal came out of nowhere and attacked them. Thomas Blackwood, broken leg and gas
Lily's POVSomething fundamental had changed inside of me during my visit to the old prison cell. Where I used to wear my heartbreak like an open wound, it had turned hard and brittle â a diamond-sharp clarity that cleaved down through years of confusion and self-doubt.Now I knew why the Luna mark had never gone away, why I'd never turned my back on Darius despite every logical reason to loathe him. The unfinished mate bond was a shackle that linked us, keeping us pinned together in hell and neither could find peace until it was fulfilled⊠or until it was severed once and for all.âHe didnât mean to let me go,â I thought as I scrubbed the floors at the old grain storage building. What an asshole, right? This still doesn't excuse him doing what he did, but I think he knew, even when he told me to get out of his life, even when he put me in stasis, that I needed to be bound to him forever by more than a debt so I'd be a burden rather than an ally.I should have been an eruption of rage
