Ava’s POV
“Aunt, I didn’t mean to. It just happened,” I managed to say. “He said he loved me. I thought it was real…” She yelled angrily, almost hurling me to the ground. “Is that why you go around fighting at school?” My eyes widened. She wasn’t aware? “Haven’t I warned you never to fight?” she asked, her voice loud and demanding. “You know Elitis High is a school for the rich—why, then, does a poor orphan like you go around fighting rich kids? Are you alright?” A wave of calm washed over me, and I let out a shaky breath. She continued, “I got an email from Mrs. Forrest demanding my attention at your school tomorrow, saying it’s urgent. This is the second time, Ava!” Her voice vibrated with anger. She stood up but didn’t stop talking as she left my room. I sat on the edge of my bed, catching my breath, letting the relief soak into me like cotton absorbing water. My phone rang. I rushed to pick it up, trying not to draw Aunt Margaret’s attention again. “Bryan,” I muttered after answering. “Ava, I’m waiting for you. Where are you?” “I’m coming! I’ll be with you shortly,” I replied and hung up. I snatched my handbag and dashed out. At the hospital, Bryan waited at the reception while I went in to see Dr. Dane. “Hi, Doc,” I said as I shut the door behind me. He smiled, his face bright and relaxed, as if expecting me. “Hi, Ava. How have you been?” “I’m fine,” I replied almost immediately. “So, what were you saying over the phone?” he asked, eager. I shot a sharp glance at him before replying. “I want an abortion. How much will it cost?” I went straight to the point. “One thing I want you to know today is that you can always count on me. I’ll never judge you, Ava.” I listened, my heart melting a little. “I know what you’re going through—from the so-called father of your baby, pressure from friends, colleagues, family, and loved ones. I understand all that, Ava. But believe me, these are not enough reasons to end an innocent life.” My conscience began tormenting me again. “But I don’t even know the baby’s father!” I snapped, gently hitting the table in front of me. My eyes burned with the pain of rejection as I stared into his. “I’ve made my decision, Doc,” I said, trying to calm the anger rising within me. He let out a shallow breath. “In that case, the process will cost eight hundred dollars. But I want to help you, so I’ll only charge six hundred, and I’ll also take care of your aftercare,” he said, his eyes full of affection—for an innocent girl like me. “Thank you, Dr. Dane. Give me a minute. I’ll be right back.” I got up and walked to the reception where Bryan was. I sat beside him, my face hiding unsaid exhaustion and fear. He glanced at me briefly, trying to read me, but I kept my gaze fixed on the floor. “What did he say?” Bryan’s voice was low, cautious. I swallowed hard, my throat dry. “Six hundred. He… he said he’ll handle the aftercare.” Bryan’s shoulders dropped, relief flickering across his face, but I felt no comfort. My mind drifted elsewhere—imagining the cold room, the sterile instruments, and the emptiness that would follow. I pressed my palms against my knees to steady my trembling fingers. “Do you have the money?” I whispered. He hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Yeah. I’ll handle it. But I’ll have to work and save some more. I only have three hundred dollars right now.” My sadness deepened. “I thought you had it all.” “It’s fine, Ava. I’ll gather the rest quickly. I can’t let you go through this alone,” he said, taking my hands in his. “I’m with you.” I placed my head on his shoulder as he brushed my black hair aside. My mind was unsettled, haunted by countless frightening thoughts. Tessa’s POV The news had spread all over Elitis High that a girl from my class was pregnant—and rumors said Chris was responsible. I walked up to him, noting he had returned to school after being absent yesterday. “So this is it, huh?” I asked, my voice laced with disgust. “You got Ava pregnant?” he glanced at me. “You think I could do that? For your information, I’m not responsible for her pregnancy. Is that what she told you? That I was responsible?” “She doesn’t have to tell us. We know she used to be your girlfriend, and that explains everything,” I replied angrily. Sophie walked past, stopping when she saw us. “He’s trying to woo another girl and get her pregnant too,” she said, trying to provoke him. Chris frowned, attempting to suppress the rising anger, but Sophie had already left. He wanted to chase her, but I grabbed his hands. “Don’t you dare! I know you too well, Chris. You’re doing all this just to get back at me!” “Oh! Is that what you think? Look, Tessa, I’ve forgotten about you since the day I caught you in the arms of that random guy,” he said. “You think I care about you? I don’t anymore.” My brow arched. I stared at him, feeling the same pain I had once inflicted on his heart. I didn’t realize how painful it was—seeing your boyfriend with someone unworthy of him. A desperate girl! It hurt deeply. As Chris turned to leave, Alex rushed in, panting. “They’ve caught you red-handed, man. Mrs. Forrest wants to see you in her office!” His thoughts froze. Will he be expelled from Elitis High? Will he be flagged as irresponsible? Is this the end of Chris at Elitis High?Bryan’s POVChris turned slowly, his eyes narrowing at Kia, who stood trembling behind him.For a moment, he just stared. Then, without warning, he closed the gap between them, his hand rising to her cheek—not with tenderness, but with a sudden, sharp shove.Kia hit the floor with a gasp, her books scattering across the hallway tiles. The crowd erupted in shocked murmurs, but Chris didn’t flinch. He turned his back on her like she was nothing, facing Tessa again, his voice breaking.“I love you, Tessa,” he said, chest heaving. “I only love you. No one else.”The corridor held its breath. Tessa stayed still, her lips slightly parted as though she was trying to absorb every bit of what he had said. Then—“A lie,” a voice rang out from behind the crowd.Heads turned.Ava.She stepped forward from seemingly nowhere, her phone raised high in one hand. Her expression was cold, her gaze fell on Chris like a predator that had cornered its prey.“Let’s all hear what you really are, Chris,” she
Bryan’s POV“Something tells me this is Liana at work,” she said, still staring at the message.I took the phone and stared too, as if I could find the answer to her worries just by looking at the screen. I dropped the phone on the bed when the incident that had just occurred flashed through my mind.“But Ava, what happened earlier today? Where did you go, and why were you bleeding?”Her face saddened immediately as she clenched her tummy. “I went to discuss the accommodation issue with Doctor Dane, and he blatantly refused to help me, saying it was risky on his end since he doesn’t know my parents or relatives—and that if anything happened to me in his house, it might lead to big problems he was trying to avoid for the sake of his career. When he said all this, my heart bled and my chest became heavy again. I googled some abortion pills and bought them at a pharmacy on my way home with a fake doctor’s prescription. I took them in a serene place and boarded a taxi home. I’m sorry, Bry
Bryan’s POVI couldn’t breathe as I sat frozen in the doctor’s office, the weight of the unknown crushing me. Then, after what felt like hours, the doctor finally spoke.“Your sister… she’s lost the baby,” he said carefully, pausing to let the words sink in.A heavy silence settled in the room. My heart sank for a moment, the grief for her loss hitting me like a punch. But then, the doctor continued, his tone softening. “However… She’s fine. Stable and responding to treatment,” he said with a level of certainty. “She should make a full recovery. In fact, she’ll be discharged this evening.”Relief washed over me like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. My sadness and pain rolled away as though a new page of life had been flipped over. I jumped to my feet, my knees trembling with the force of the emotion.“Can I see her?” I asked eagerly, my voice trembling with urgency. The doctor nodded. “Yes, she’s awake and alert now. But take it easy—don’t startle her.”I raced down the corrido
Ava’s POVI got up from my sleep and looked around to see if Bryan’s parents were back yet, but they weren’t. I walked into Bryan’s room, then into the bathroom, and took a shower. After drying off, I stared at my tummy in the mirror, my mind heavy as memories of Chris flashed through me: our relationship and that birthday surprise at the hotel that night. “This is the result of that night,” I murmured. I quickly shook it off and picked up my phone, dialing Dr. Dane’s number. The line clicked, and his calm voice answered. “Hello, Ava. This is Dr. Dane.”“Good morning, Doctor,” I said, trying to sound alright. “I… I wanted to discuss something with you. It’s really important to me,” I added, pausing for him to respond, but the line remained silent. I continued, “My aunt found out that I was pregnant and threw me out of the house. I’m homeless right now, and that’s why I’m calling you, Doc. I don’t know if you can help me.” I remembered how Dr. Dane used to say I could confide in him, t
Bryan’s POVFrom the mirror, I saw Ava sitting on the bed behind me while I got dressed, ready for my first date with Tessa Walker, a famous and well-known model in the modeling industry. A black jeep honked in front of my house.“That must be Tessa,” I said as we peeped through the window. Her car was fucking clean. “A car for the governor’s children,” I thought.“I’ll see you, Ava! I’ll see you when I return,” I screamed over my shoulder as I rushed toward the door, disorganized. She said something, but I didn’t hear it clearly.I hopped into the car. Ava was watching from the window; I knew she was crying, but that was something we’d deal with when I returned. I sat in the back seat with Tessa, and her driver moved the car.I suddenly started sweating. I removed my handkerchief from my trouser pocket and wiped the sweat off my face several times. Tessa’s beauty was like the glow of the sun, too perfect and spotless. I couldn’t believe I was sitting next to her and now officially he
Chris’s POVI knocked at the door before twisting the handle open. Ava sat on the chair facing Mrs. Forrest. She glanced at me, then returned her gaze to the ground. My eyes darted between the two of them; I already knew what this was about. She asked me to sit beside Ava, which I did.“Did you get Ava pregnant?” she asked bluntly. I looked briefly at Ava before answering. “No, I’ve never been involved with Ava,” I said plainly. She didn’t look up at me. Mrs. Forrest let out a sigh.“Chris has just confirmed what you said, so who is the father of your baby?” she asked, her voice soft and calm. She signaled me to excuse myself, but I stood outside the door, listening.“You can confide in me, Ava.”“I went out after school with some friends and got drugged. But I don’t want anyone to know about this,” she lied, still pleading that Mrs. Forrest keep her secret. Silence filled the room for a moment.“And you don’t want me to hand this matter over—”“No! No, I don’t want any of that,” Ava
