The vibrating sound from the refrigerator was the only sound keeping Chloe grounded in the quiet, heavy stillness of the night at about 11:00 pm. In front of her was a table with a laptop on it, and beside it was a cup of coffee. She stared at the bright light emanating from the screen of her laptop. Freelance coding contracts paid the bills, but tonight, the rhythm of her typing was just a distraction from the sleeplessness that always seemed to find her.

In the bedroom upstairs was her six-year-old son, Scott, who was fast asleep.

The floor started to vibrate. Chloe froze and stopped typing on her computer. It wasn’t thunder from the sky; it was the deep, growly sound of several big cars waiting outside her suburban driveway. Slowly, she stood up, with her heart beating very fast. She tiptoed to the window, parting the curtains by a fraction of an inch to peep outside of her window for her to see what was going on.

Three midnight-black SUVs were parked outside her house. As she watched, their soft yellow headlights turned off, glowing like tiny moons in the foggy night. Before she could even process the sight, the doors snapped open in unison. Men poured out of the car. They wore full tactical gear, matte-black helmets, and body armour, carrying assault rifles raised to their shoulders.

No, no, no.

They weren't just on her street. They were walking towards her door

"Scott," she whispered, the name forcing its way out of her throat as she had become frozen from fear.

Chloe ran to the bedroom as fast as she could, with her bare feet making a loud sound on the wood. She pushed Scott’s door open; the room was glowing with a bright green light! Scott wasn’t in bed, he was sitting on the floor with his legs crossed, tapping on a strange heavily modified tablet with his small fingers, which he had built himself out of spare parts from her tools.

"S-Scott…," Chloe whispered, her voice shaking. The air felt cold, and the shadows on the walls seemed to move. "Mommy?" Scott looked up, his big, innocent eyes blinking in the dark. "I found a really big puzzle online. Look, the firewall has three layers of….." Shh! She pulled him close and whispered, "Stay quiet."

BOOM

She heard a thunderous Bang! Bang!! Bang!!! On her door, her hands and legs became feeble. She couldn’t move. The bang became heavier as she was trying to summon the courage to hide, the doors snapped open followed by a shattering sound of glass and terrifying sound of the tactical team.

The whole house shook. Bright lights flashed downstairs, and loud voices shouted, "Clear! Move, move!" Chloe grabbed Scott and pulled him close. They ran into their little closet and shut the door. She hugged him tight, her heart beating fast. "Mommy, you’re squeezing too hard," Scott whispered, his voice tiny and scared. "Shh!, baby," Chloe said softly with her eyes full of tears. "We have to be very still." Her thoughts were spinning fast. She was scared and confused. Did she make someone angry with her work? Did a bad person steal their information?

Heavy footsteps walked towards the bedroom.

Kick!

The bedroom door cracked open with a loud snap! Light shining through the cracks in the closet door. Chloe held her breath, hoping the dark would keep them safe.

"Bedroom clear! Moving outside!" someone shouted.

Then everything went quiet. The loud voices stopped. The house felt heavy and still. Only slow footsteps came down into the room, strong and scary, as they belonged to someone very important.

Suddenly, the closet door flew open!

Chloe gasped and pulled Scott close. A bright light shone in her eyes, and she blinked hard. When the light moved down, she saw a tall man standing in the room.

It was George Boss.

Chloe stopped breathing for a moment. Her heart felt frozen. She hadn’t seen that man in seven years, but she would know the face anywhere. He looked exactly as he always did, powerful, unyielding, and utterly imposing. He wasn’t wearing the same clothes as the other men. He wore a steel-grey suit, the jacket discarded, his tie loosened, and his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms His face was full of absolute, unadulterated anger.

"Out!!," George said in a deep, rough voice. He wasn’t talking to Chloe. He was talking to the other men. They lowered their weapons and left the room, leaving Chloe and George alone. George stepped closer, filling the tiny closet with his tall shape. He looked down at her with eyes that felt sharp and cold. "Seven years, Chloe," he said quietly. "Seven years you disappeared. And now you show up by making trouble with me?"

Chloe’s voice shook as she tried to speak. "George, I don’t understand," she said, her words trembling. "You broke my door! You brought armed men into my house! I haven't done anything wrong to you!"

Her hands were shaking, and her heart felt like it might burst. She looked up at George, hoping he would listen, but his eyes stayed cold and hard.

"Don’t lie to me!" George shouted, slamming his hand against the doorframe. The sound made Chloe jump. His voice was deep and powerful, shaking the air around them.

"Twenty minutes ago," he said, his words sharp and fast, "someone attacked the computer systems at Boss Industries. It was a big, smart hack that almost destroyed our servers. We traced the digital signature, overrode the proxies, and pinned the hard IP address here to this exact house."

He leaned closer, his eyes dark and fierce. "You were the best computer expert I ever hired, Chloe. But attacking my company? That is a declaration of war. What did you steal?"

"I didn’t steal anything!" Chloe cried, tears running down her face. "I’ve only been working on normal projects! Believe me, George, I didn’t touch your systems!"

George frowned, studying her face. He looked for a lie but didn’t find one. Then his eyes drifted toward the small bundle Chloe was shielding in her lap.

For the first time, George noticed the boy.

Scott looked up at him, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and curiosity. His small hand shook as he held a strange tablet. On its bright green screen, lines of fast‑moving computer code flashed by. In the middle of the screen, a red error message blinked: CONNECTION TERMINATED – BOSS_MAIN_SEC.

George stopped breathing for a moment. His body went still.

George's eyes moved from the glowing code on the screen to the little boy’s face. He traced the sharp line of Scott’s jaw, the soft curl of his dark hair, and most striking of all, the bright grey eyes staring back at him.

They were his own eyes.

All the anger drained from George’s face. Shock froze him in place. The silence in the closet felt heavy, pressing against the walls.

The transition from the neutral house to George’s primary downtown penthouse was swift and silent. They were driven in an armored car with tinted windows blocking out the city. When the elevator opened straight into the top floor, Chloe could feel how rich George was; his wealth seemed to fill the air. The penthouse was huge and sleek, built with smooth concrete, dark metal, and tall glass walls showing the city below. It felt less like a home and more like a high-tech corporate command center. Sophisticated security panels blinked silently beside every door, and biometric scanners hummed near the entryways, making the place feel both impressive and intimidating.Chloe walked through the space slowly, her footsteps echoing. The air smelled clean, almost too clean, like a hospital. Scott did not cry or cling to his mother. Instead, the moment his small sneakers touched the shiny floor, his eyes lit up. He dropped his gaze to the integrated touchpads on the walls, tracking the subtle p

The morning sun rose, cold and sharp, casting long shadows through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the neutral house Chloe had chosen as their temporary neutral ground. The glass and steel surrounding them did nothing to dull the noise of the legal storm crashing through the front door.By 8:00 AM, the living room was flooded with George’s high-priced legal team. Three lawyers in immaculate, dark suits sat across from Chloe at a table, their leather briefcases open, revealing thick stacks of legal motions and custody petitions.George stood by the window, his back turned to the room, calm but commanding. He wore a dark charcoal suit that probably cost more than what Chloe made in a year. His presence seemed to control the space, cold, powerful, and impossible to ignore. Looking out over the city skyline like a general surveying a battlefield. His cold, unyielding posture made it clear that the brief moment of fatherly softness from the night before was completely buried under corporat

"We are not going anywhere with you," Chloe said, her voice shaking but resolute as she stepped directly between George and the bed, physically shielding Scott once again. "Chloe, look around you," George snapped, gesturing to the shattered doorway. "Your perimeter is completely compromised. The digital footprint of Scott’s hack is sitting in a global cache right now. My tech teams are scrubbing it, but if a single foreign agent or corporate rival gets a piece of that data, they will trace it to this house. You can not protect him here. We are going to my compound in the city." "Your compound is a golden cage, George! The second I step foot in there, you'll use your lawyers and your money to lock me out and keep him forever," Chloe fired back, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was terrified of the threat outside, but she was entirely re-energized by the threat of losing her son to a man who always got what he wanted. "I don't have time for a custody battle in the middle of

What is this?” he whispered, his voice suddenly quiet and shaky. He pointed at the tablet, then looked at Chloe, his chest rising and falling fast. “Chloe what is this?” Chloe closed her eyes and let out a broken sob. She kissed Scott’s hair gently, knowing the secret she had protected for seven long years had just shattered in a single night. “He… he likes puzzles,” Chloe whispered, her voice shaking as she held Scott close. “George, please. He didn’t mean to. He’s only six.” George didn’t seem to hear her. His eyes stayed fixed on the boy, his thoughts spinning fast. The truth hit him hard, crashing over him like a wave. He had a son. The tablet’s bright green light filled the tiny closet, making strange shadows dance on the walls. Scott looked back and forth between his mother’s tear-stained face and the towering man standing in the doorway. He didn't understand the complex web of adult history binding them, but he did understand his tablet. On its screen, the words from B
