"Take your time," I said, and I meant it.

He nodded, still looking at the window, and I didn't push. In the morning, we finished the clearing we had left the night before, scrubbing the casserole dish and wrapping the last of the bread to go in the freezer. By the time the dishes were done, the kitchen had gone bright and quiet, and neither of us wanted to eat in it.

"Let's have breakfast somewhere else," I said. "There's a café beside the public garden. We could sit outside, if it stays dry."

"Take your time," I said, and I meant it.He nodded, still looking at the window, and I didn't push. In the morning, we finished the clearing we had left the night before, scrubbing the casserole dish and wrapping the last of the bread to go in the freezer. By the time the dishes were done, the kitchen had gone bright and quiet, and neither of us wanted to eat in it."Let's have breakfast somewhere else," I said. "There's a café beside the public garden. We could sit outside, if it stays dry.""Fine by me.""You don't want to look at a menu first?""I'd rather go and see."The café was busy, with every table inside taken and a queue at the counter, but a door at the back led to a sheltered courtyard with a few tables standing empty. The air was cool, and the sun came over the wall and settled on the stone like a hand. We took the table nearest the wall and sat with our coats still on, and our food came on two plates with a pot of coffee between us.A gust came down the courtyard as I

"I don't know either," I said. "I love living here with you. I just don't think I've ever imagined what we'd look for if we were starting from nothing.""Then we don't have to know tonight.""No.""We could just lie here and not decide anything.""That sounds very good," I said, and we did exactly that.Claire replied to my invitation with three exclamation marks, and Marcus asked what he should bring and was told "yourselves" and said he'd bring wine anyway. By Friday evening Damien was back from his two days on site, the kitchen smelled of garlic and rosemary, and I had a casserole in the oven that would mostly look after itself. We'd learned something from the last few dinners, and for once we weren't going to spend the whole evening at the stove.Damien had taken charge of the bread and the salad, and I'd given him a list. When I came back from setting the table, I found four loaves lined up on the counter like a small, crusty army. He was standing in front of them with his hands

  • He Chose My Sister, So I Married His Enemy   Chapter 355: We Left The Question Open

On Sunday morning I got us out of the house before ten, with a flask of tea and the vaguest of plans. I'd checked that a little passenger boat ran from a riverside town an hour's drive away, and I'd picked a pub for lunch from a photograph. That was all I'd arranged, and I felt rather proud of it.Damien was buckling his seatbelt when he looked over. "Where are we going to leave the car?""There'll be somewhere.""At the landing?""I didn't think about that," I admitted, and started to laugh. "It's a town. They must have parking.""I'm only asking." He was smiling at the windscreen. "Somebody's got to."We drove for a while with the radio low. Somewhere past a long field of sheep, I said it before I could lose my nerve, that I didn't want to turn the last few days into a deadline for myself. He nodded, watching the road. "We can come back to it when either of us has something new to say," he said, and that was the end of it, and I felt my shoulders come down. We spent the rest of the

"I'm good at making something urgent," he said. "Even when it isn't."He picked up a plate from the rack and dried it slowly, with his eyes on the cloth. I waited, drying a glass of my own, and when he didn't go on, I asked what he meant."I'm not sure." He frowned. "I think I'd be in the room, but I wouldn't be there. A child would be telling me something, and I'd nod, and in my head I'd be writing an email. I'd say 'one minute.' And then one day I'd look up and they'd stopped asking."He handed me the plate, and I put it on the shelf. The quiet in the kitchen had changed, and I could hear the tap dripping slowly into the sink. It was not what I had expected him to say."You'd notice," I said. "You'd see it happening.""Sometimes you have to tell me." He said it gently, with no accusation, and reached for the next plate. "I don't always see it until someone points it out."I opened my mouth to argue and found I couldn't. It was true, and we both knew it, and I did not need to list th

  • He Chose My Sister, So I Married His Enemy   Chapter 353:I Was Afraid Of Disappearing

On Saturday morning I got ready slowly, because for once I had somewhere to be that was entirely mine. I had booked a ticket for the exhibition at the small gallery weeks ago, long before anyone asked us about children, and it felt good to be going to something I had chosen. Damien was hunting for his other shoe, with a haircut and a trip to return a kettle plug planned for the morning, and we had agreed to meet for lunch afterward.I found the shoe under the bed and held it out of reach. "What will you give me for it?""My undying gratitude.""Not enough."He crossed the room, and I kissed him, long and slow, until his hand was on my waist and his breath had changed. Then I stepped back, put the shoe in his hand, and picked up my bag. "Later," I said."That's cruel.""I know."The gallery was two rooms above a bookbinder's, with white walls and a smell of floor polish. In the second room hung one enormous painting, a tangle of grey and brown that looked, from the doorway, like a spil

"I don't know," I said.He took a breath and looked down at our hands, where his thumb had been moving slowly across my knuckles. I waited. The lamp hummed faintly, and I could hear the clock ticking in the hall."It isn't that I don't want to," I said quickly. "Or that I do. I think I've just never seriously pictured it, and you've clearly been picturing it for ages, and I don't want you to think that I'm saying no, because I'm not, it's only that I can't tell you it'll turn into a yes, and...""Hold on.""I'm explaining too much.""You are, a bit." He looked up, and his eyes were gentle. "I was only deciding what to say. I wasn't disappointed.""You went quiet.""I went quiet because I didn't want to say the wrong thing." He turned my hand over in his. "Then we don't know yet.""I might not know for a long time.""That's all right.""You wouldn't mind?""I didn't say I wouldn't mind. I said it's all right." He gave a small, crooked smile. "You've only just asked yourself. I can wait
