ARIA
With no means to leave the hospital, I had to call my boss, Josh. He paid for my bone surgery and the doctor insisted I wait until I was fully healed. I didn't speak a word to anyone, but on the day I was to be released from the hospital, Rowan showed up. His brows jumped when he saw me. I had lost tons of weight and I was looking slimmer. He stood beside my bed, looking at me distastefully. “Is this your way of trying to guilt me, Aria?” I rolled my eyes, and gritted my teeth. “Why would I bother? It is obvious it doesn't matter to you whether I live or die.” Rowan’s green eyes widened at my tone. I watched as Rowan’s fingers tightened into a fist at his side like he wanted to hit me. Instead he exhaled. “You're right. You're just a wretched whore. How could you sleep with a man in such a public place?” I grimaced, looking at the wall instead of into his face. I couldn't bear to look at him when he accused me of such a thing. “You know I would never do that, Rowan. I've always been faithful to you and never once slacked in my love for you.” I lifted pleading eyes to him. Rowan stood and sighed. “I came here to get my ring from you. I don't want to be associated with a woman like you. You're a stain on the Zane name. When you come home to pack your things, leave my ring behind.” With those words, he left me behind, not even waiting to help me home. I wished I could leave behind this body. Or just die. I knew I couldn't return home to Rowan yet so I went over to my parent's place. It was just as bad, but I didn't want to deal with Rowan throwing me out of his house yet. I wondered about the man who had molested me, now I was out, I had to find him. But what would I say to him? He had obviously done it thinking I was another woman. I was surprised by the sound of music at my parent's house. The butler opened the door for me, his eyes widening at the sight of me. “Mrs. Zane?” I walked in, greeting Mr. Partridge. “What's happening here?” Mr. Partridge’s voice was razor-sharp like he would have preferred to throw me out instead of let me in. “You don't know? Today is Miss. Zara’s birthday. Your parents are throwing her a party. Only the most elite have been invited.” I bit my lip, blinking back salty tears. They had always forgotten my birthday, but of course they were throwing a party for Zara on the day I was released from hospital. I decided to ignore the party and just head to my room. The last thing I wanted to deal with was the sight of my sister. I laid on the bed, closed my eyes and fell asleep. I was harshly woken by a prolonged banging on my door. I crawled out of bed and opened the door, expecting my parents. Instead, it was my brother, Travis. I smiled wide, feeling happy for the first time in months. “Travis!” I gasped as I ran into his arms, hugging him tight. Travis was my elder brother and the only person who always protected me when dad tried using me as a punching bag. He was also the only one who treated Zara and I as equals in this house. “Unhand me now. Your existence is a disgrace to the Stanton name.” My brother’s voice pierced my cloud of happiness. I lifted my eyes, surprised at the words. “Travis, I swear, I didn't…” “Shut your mouth!” He barked. He lifted his phone and showed me the screen. My lips parted in shock. It was a photo of me, brightened and edited to twist the truth. My face looked like I was lost in pleasure, not pain. My breasts were out too. The man's face was hidden, but mine was clear and bold, making it obvious we were in bed together. “Travis, I swear I can explain.” I cried. If Travis hated me, my life would be officially over. “What? You're going to explain how you were caught sleeping with a man when you're married to a good man like Rowan? Are you going to explain it to the millions of people who have seen this photo?” He roared at me, his face dark like storm clouds. “Millions of p…people?” I stammered, my heart sinking through my stomach to the floor. “Yes. Your face has gone viral around the world. I hope you see what a disgrace you are. I didn't expect this from you. I am disgusted and disappointed.” With those words, he whirled around and left my world shattered around me. How did that picture get out? I heard my phone ring inside the room and rushed back. It was my boss. “Josh?” My voice quivered as I whispered. “We just lost the contract. The woman saw your photo online and cancelled saying she can't allow an unfaithful woman to shoot her wedding.” Josh sounded tired and dismayed. “No…” “You're fired, Aria. I like your work, but I can't be associated with you right now.” He hung up the phone and my head whirled as I tried to understand what was going on. I ran out of my room, deciding I would go to the office and beg Josh for my job. I needed it, especially as Rowan had made it clear he was done with me. I was walking past Zara’s door when I heard moans from inside. “Fuck!” a man groaned, loud and breathless. My feet froze. That voice. I knew that voice. No… it couldn’t be. I turned the knob and shoved the door open, and my breath caught in my throat. My husband was buried between Zara’s legs, thrusting into her without shame. And Zara? Zara was kissing another woman. My husband and my step-sister were having a threesome! My heart started pounding, loud and erratic, like I was about to faint.Enjoying the read to this point? I'd love to hear from you. ARIAA dry laugh escaped my lips. “Wow, Ivan, couldn't even stay dead for one month?” I asked.Ivan Dmitri was alive, standing there like the devil had found his way out of hell. On his face was a smug grin, and I could tell he'd accurately read the surprise on my face. Standing beside him, was Rowan.“Aria? Did you miss me?” Ivan’s eyes ran over my body, and his smirk widened. “I see you're looking even better.” Ivan slid into the booth across from me like he owned the place, while Rowan followed, sitting beside me, boxing me in against the wall like he owned me. My body locked up, but I moved as far away as the leather seat allowed, placing my bag between us as a wall. Xander wasn’t coming. It was obvious that the lunch had been a setup.“I take it Mr. Lexington isn’t joining us?” My tone was flat, but I felt my pulse hammering in my throat.Ivan laughed, but Rowan answered, his arm lifting and curling across the back of the booth, his musky scent hitting my nose like poison. “D
ARIA “Mara? Please clear my schedule for the day.” Mara sat opposite me, tapping into her tablet. She stopped. “Um, Mr Lexington called earlier, asking me to schedule time for lunch with him.” Xander? I hadn't seen him since the other day in Caspian’s office. Why hadn't he called me? “Okay, an hour at lunch. Nothing else for the rest of the day.” I said. She locked the door behind her and I turned on my laptop, keeping track of the news. While we drove over, I'd texted the same reporter I used the last time, with the audio of Zara saying I should get over the assault. I didn't have long to wait. About an hour later, the notifications started dropping in. The outrage was expected, and deserved. “Zara Stanton? I always knew there was something not right about her!” “Wow, she has a sister?” “It was years ago, get over it!” I scrolled through most of the comments, but there was no satisfaction in it. I really didn't care much about Zara, I just wished she would stay the
CASPIAN Was that footsteps? My eyes opened but I stayed still, feeling Aria’s heartbeat echo mine. She was lying right on top of me. We'd fallen asleep that way after mind-blowing sex against her bedroom door. She'd agreed for me to spend the night at her place. I smiled, then heard that sound again and the smile leaked off my face. Was there someone in her house? I slowly slid Aria off my stomach, soothing her when she grumbled in her sleep. When she closed her eyes again, I got out of the bed, and walked to the door, pulling my shirt on. Opening the door as quietly as I could, I slipped into the hallway, stilled and listened. The night was silent and cold, and for a second, I believed it was nothing. I was turning to head back into the room when the hairs on the back of my neck raised at once. Someone was in the house. I knew it because the footsteps in the hallway headed towards me. Turning around, I hid in the dark and waited. A few seconds later, a shadow stopped ju
ARIA “We don't know who sent those. We didn't pick any fingerprints off it.” Oh. I sat back, a sigh of relief escaping my lips. I could deal with these one at a time. I sat back, closed my eyes, and tried to shove it all away. “Aria,” I heard Caspian’s voice as if from afar. Opening my eyes, I saw that we were parked in front of my building. I sat up, rubbing off the sleep from my eyes. I'd drifted off during the drive. Caspian helped me climb out of the car. I walked with him to the door, and inside the house. Immediately I did, I saw Reed on the couch, pushing a toy truck between him and Lark. Michelle had Nylah on her lap, making her hair into cute little braids. I stopped at the door. “Oh. I didn't know you two were here.” Nylah’s eyes fastened on Caspian and she hurried over, almost jumping into his arms. He held her, twirling her in a circle as always before he smacked a kiss on the corner of her lip. “Hello, Princess.” Reed was watching the both of them with a d
ARIA I got tired of waiting for Caspian, and left his office. I was much calmer. Analide was in her office and came around to talk to me, but I shook my head, not in the mood to talk. She placed her fingers on my arm. “Caspian said I was to inform him if you tried to leave.” I shrugged. “You can, but I'm leaving. I'm tired of waiting.” With each passing minute, my thoughts only became wilder. After dwelling on it for the last hour, I didn't really believe it was Zara or Rowan. Maybe Vivienne, but definitely not Zara or Rowan. They were too dumb for that. Or maybe it was even Talia, after all she had been standing right outside my office door. And how could she tell such a lie to Caspian? I shook my head, and walked away from Analide as she called Caspian. I was tempted to return to my office, but I went straight to the parking lot. I should have waited for Caspian. Talia was standing beside his car, looking impatient as hell. I walked over to her with rage. “How dare
CASPIAN Talia frowned up at Duke, then hid her face under my arm. I shook my head at him. “Don't.” I turned to walk away, my arm around her shoulder, then stopped. “The flowers are on the table, along with the note. I'll be back in a few minutes.” Talia clutched my shirt as we walked away. I heard Duke open the door and close it behind him. I was barely aware of my surroundings as I walked Talia to the parking lot. “Where's your car?” She tightened her fingers against my skin, clawing at me. Her tears rapidly came pouring out again. “I don't want to be alone right now.” “Talia, I'm at work. I'll be with you immediately I'm done.” Her cries became even louder and she wouldn't move. “I can't be alone right now, Caspian. This is your fault, I shouldn't have to bear it alone!” I pulled in a breath of air and prayed for patience to deal with her. “Fine, sit in my car for a moment. I'll be back.” I told her. I walked her over to my car, settled her in, and walked away, hurrying up
