5. "I WANT MY RING"

ARIA

With no means to leave the hospital, I had to call my boss, Josh. He paid for my bone surgery and the doctor insisted I wait until I was fully healed.

I didn't speak a word to anyone, but on the day I was to be released from the hospital, Rowan showed up.

His brows jumped when he saw me. I had lost tons of weight and I was looking slimmer.

He stood beside my bed, looking at me distastefully. “Is this your way of trying to guilt me, Aria?”

I rolled my eyes, and gritted my teeth. “Why would I bother? It is obvious it doesn't matter to you whether I live or die.”

Rowan’s green eyes widened at my tone.

I watched as Rowan’s fingers tightened into a fist at his side like he wanted to hit me. Instead he exhaled. “You're right. You're just a wretched whore. How could you sleep with a man in such a public place?”

I grimaced, looking at the wall instead of into his face. I couldn't bear to look at him when he accused me of such a thing.

“You know I would never do that, Rowan. I've always been faithful to you and never once slacked in my love for you.” I lifted pleading eyes to him.

Rowan stood and sighed. “I came here to get my ring from you. I don't want to be associated with a woman like you. You're a stain on the Zane name. When you come home to pack your things, leave my ring behind.”

With those words, he left me behind, not even waiting to help me home. I wished I could leave behind this body. Or just die.

I knew I couldn't return home to Rowan yet so I went over to my parent's place. It was just as bad, but I didn't want to deal with Rowan throwing me out of his house yet.

I wondered about the man who had molested me, now I was out, I had to find him. But what would I say to him? He had obviously done it thinking I was another woman.

I was surprised by the sound of music at my parent's house. The butler opened the door for me, his eyes widening at the sight of me.

“Mrs. Zane?”

I walked in, greeting Mr. Partridge. “What's happening here?”

Mr. Partridge’s voice was razor-sharp like he would have preferred to throw me out instead of let me in. “You don't know? Today is Miss. Zara’s birthday. Your parents are throwing her a party. Only the most elite have been invited.”

I bit my lip, blinking back salty tears.

They had always forgotten my birthday, but of course they were throwing a party for Zara on the day I was released from hospital.

I decided to ignore the party and just head to my room. The last thing I wanted to deal with was the sight of my sister.

I laid on the bed, closed my eyes and fell asleep. I was harshly woken by a prolonged banging on my door. I crawled out of bed and opened the door, expecting my parents.

Instead, it was my brother, Travis.

I smiled wide, feeling happy for the first time in months. “Travis!” I gasped as I ran into his arms, hugging him tight.

Travis was my elder brother and the only person who always protected me when dad tried using me as a punching bag.

He was also the only one who treated Zara and I as equals in this house.

“Unhand me now. Your existence is a disgrace to the Stanton name.” My brother’s voice pierced my cloud of happiness.

I lifted my eyes, surprised at the words. “Travis, I swear, I didn't…”

“Shut your mouth!” He barked. He lifted his phone and showed me the screen.

My lips parted in shock. It was a photo of me, brightened and edited to twist the truth. My face looked like I was lost in pleasure, not pain. My breasts were out too.

The man's face was hidden, but mine was clear and bold, making it obvious we were in bed together.

“Travis, I swear I can explain.” I cried. If Travis hated me, my life would be officially over.

“What? You're going to explain how you were caught sleeping with a man when you're married to a good man like Rowan? Are you going to explain it to the millions of people who have seen this photo?” He roared at me, his face dark like storm clouds.

“Millions of p…people?” I stammered, my heart sinking through my stomach to the floor.

“Yes. Your face has gone viral around the world. I hope you see what a disgrace you are. I didn't expect this from you. I am disgusted and disappointed.”

With those words, he whirled around and left my world shattered around me. How did that picture get out?

I heard my phone ring inside the room and rushed back. It was my boss.

“Josh?” My voice quivered as I whispered.

“We just lost the contract. The woman saw your photo online and cancelled saying she can't allow an unfaithful woman to shoot her wedding.” Josh sounded tired and dismayed.

“No…”

“You're fired, Aria. I like your work, but I can't be associated with you right now.”

He hung up the phone and my head whirled as I tried to understand what was going on.

I ran out of my room, deciding I would go to the office and beg Josh for my job. I needed it, especially as Rowan had made it clear he was done with me.

I was walking past Zara’s door when I heard moans from inside.

“Fuck!” a man groaned, loud and breathless.

My feet froze.

That voice. I knew that voice.

No… it couldn’t be.

I turned the knob and shoved the door open, and my breath caught in my throat.

My husband was buried between Zara’s legs, thrusting into her without shame.

And Zara? Zara was kissing another woman.

My husband and my step-sister were having a threesome!

My heart started pounding, loud and erratic, like I was about to faint.

ARIACaspian was home. The sight of him sitting on the couch, jacket tossed carelessly over the armrest, nearly undid me. His head snapped up when I shut the door, eyes scanning me like he was bracing for bad news.I didn’t say a word. I crossed the room and threw my arms around him, burying myself in his chest before he could ask.“Aria?” His voice was rough with surprise. His arms came around me instantly, locking me in place. “What’s wrong?”I didn’t answer. I just held him tighter like if I let go, reality would come crashing down on me. My heart was racing, and I felt stupid for shaking when Caspian felt so solid the way he always did. He eased back just enough to tilt my chin up. “Talk to me.”“I just…” My throat was tight. “I needed to see you.”His eyes softened. He didn’t press. Caspian stood, sliding his hand into mine, and led me down the hall without a word. The bedroom felt quieter than the rest of the house, a bubble of calm that wrapped around us the second he shut

ARIA Stevens breathing became ragged, as though he was trying not to break into tears. And that scared me more than anything. A slap in public was one thing, but had Rowan sent someone to Stevens house? Was he even in this moment still in danger? “Stevens,” I said again. “Did he hurt you?” “No.” Stevens murmured, but his voice was so low that I barely heard it. “Then what happened?” I pressed gently, because I knew if I pushed too hard, he’d shut down. I could already feel it. He laughed. “It doesn’t have to be physical to hurt, Aria. You think it’s just fists and guns with him? No. He’s smarter than that. He doesn’t get his hands dirty if he doesn’t have to. He doesn’t… he doesn’t leave bruises if he doesn't want to.” A chill ran up my arms, because that was exactly the truth. Rowan's words could hurt as bad as his fists, and then sometimes, he sent his goons after you and that was even worse. Stevens exhaled shakily. “The night he called me about my daughter’s dance class…

ARIAI’d barely made it halfway through the bottle of water I’d grabbed on my way out of the office before my hand started shaking. The cap wouldn’t twist back on properly, and I nearly dropped it. I slipped into the driver’s seat and slammed the door shut, locking it before I’d even caught my breath. Dominique’s voice was still in my ears.I sat there for a moment with my forehead pressed against the steering wheel. The car smelled faintly like the vanilla air freshener Lana insisted on keeping in here, but even that was doing nothing to settle me.“Call Stevens,” I muttered to myself. My hand moved on autopilot, pulling my phone from my bag and tapping his name before I could second-guess myself. When he answered, I didn't wait for him to tell me he couldn't talk to me again, I just needed to know what had really happened. “Stevens, wait. What’s going on? I just need to know if something happened?”I could hear him breathing heavily, like he was pacing. “Aria, I have a wife. I h

CHAPTER 236ARIA“Stevens, just hear me out first. I won't risk them, I just need your help.”“No” I could hear the anger bleeding through his words and they were directed at me. “No, Aria you listen to me this time.”The desperation in his tone made me stop cold.“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with,” he whispered. “You’re new to the company. You don’t know him like I do. He doesn’t… he doesn’t play fair. He’ll hurt them. I’ve seen him do it before.”What right did Stevens have to tell me that I didn't know Rowan like he did? I'd lived with that man for years. If anyone knew the sort of monster Rowan was, it was me. I swallowed hard, my grip on the phone tightening until it hurt. “Stevens, he’s not going to touch you. I can make sure of that.”“Stop, Aria, you can't make sure of a damned thing because you won't even see him coming.” The words were panicked. “I can’t do this. Delete my number. Please. Don’t call again.”He ended the call. For the next few minutes, not a mus

  • Her Billionaire Ex-husband's Regret    236. A LITTLE SHOW OF POWER

ARIA “What are you doing here?” Zara snapped, jumping off Rowan’s lap. She looked from me to Rowan, then back at me with a barely concealed look of hate. “Me? How about you ask Rowan? Weren't you cozied up so comfortably with him just now?” “Why would I ask him? You're the one who interrupted us!” I narrowed my eyes. Zara sounded genuinely confused with my appearance which was quite confusing. I assumed she knew I worked here now. And second, Rowan had broken off their engagement, and the last thing I expected was to find them making out. I didn’t let myself dwell on it. Not now. Because if she didn't know, then it meant Rowan had staged this. A petty little show to make me jealous when I stepped into the room to find him and my step-sister, maybe to remind me who controlled the pieces on this board. I didn’t even glance at her again. She wasn’t my problem. She was Rowan’s and he could deal with her. “Rowan? Mind telling me why Stevens was fired? He was per

ARIAWork wasn’t supposed to feel like walking into enemy territory, but the second I stepped into Rowan’s building, that’s exactly what it was.Vienne was waiting in the lobby, crisp as ever. She ran her eyes over my attire and her lips thinned. A disapproving look passed over her face as she snapped her laptop shut and lifted it into her hands. “Good morning, Miss Stanton. Congratulations. You’ve been appointed head of the Creative Department.”I stopped, lifting a brow because that made no sense at all. “Come again?”She started walking to the elevator. “You’ll be overseeing all creative projects effective immediately.”It landed like a slap. My mind tripped over the words until the obvious question punched its way out. “What about Stevens? Isn't he supposed to be the creative lead?” “He was, unfortunately he isn't. Mr. Stevens was terminated yesterday.”The bottom dropped out of me, and it felt as though the air was punched right out of my lungs. “Terminated? As in fired?”What
