Chapter 2

Author: Tiptik
Selena's POV

The System's voice turned urgent. "Rex, Selena's not going to make it—"

"Stop." Rex cut in, his tone strained. "Don't. If you keep going, I won't be able to take it."

"No, Rex, listen to me, she can't handle any more—"

"I said stop. No matter what happens to Selena, I'll still love her. She has to take Vera's place and finish this part of the storyline. If she doesn't, fate will put Vera through it instead."

His voice never wavered. To me, it sounded like a devil's whisper.

Soon after, someone brought in over a dozen silver nails. Even as far gone as I was, the sight of them sent me scrambling backward in blind terror.

I was three months pregnant when the hunters took me.

I'd planned to tell Rex the good news as soon as the mission was over. He'd always talked about wanting a pup and building a real family together. I thought we had a future.

Before I could react, rough hands seized my limbs. I watched, helpless, as they drove the massive silver nails into my body one by one. The metal sank into flesh with a faint hiss, and the agony hit me all at once, flooding every inch of me.

I nearly blacked out from the pain, but they'd injected me with a stimulant beforehand, so I stayed awake through all of it. I felt every second of that hell with perfect clarity.

"I think she really is pregnant." The woman with the tongs glanced at the blood between my legs and looked away, unable to stomach it.

"Poor thing."

My pup. My poor, unborn pup couldn't survive what they'd done to my body, and was gone.

Through the haze, I heard Rex's voice again, trembling just barely enough to notice.

"Selena, you're the female lead. You'll be fine. Once you've taken Vera's place and finished this part of the story, I'll come get you right away. I promise I'll make it up to you."

Make it up to me? With what? His so-called love?

I let out a broken laugh. I didn't even have tears left.

They dragged me off the ground like a dead dog and threw me into a flooded cell that reeked of rot while laughing. It was where the hunters kept captured wolves.

The water was laced with wolfsbane, and it ate away at a wolf's skin on contact. They left me soaking in that freezing, filthy water and walked off without a second thought, still joking among themselves.

I didn't know how much time passed before the cell door finally opened.

Rex appeared in the doorway, his figure backlit and his face crumpling like he was about to cry. The moment he saw me, he rushed forward and pulled me into his arms, his voice shaking. "Selena, I'm here. I came to save you."

I lifted my head and stared at him with empty eyes. The face I'd once loved so deeply now made me feel nothing but revulsion.

"You told me you always had my location tracked—that you'd come for me the second anything happened."

He stiffened, then rushed to explain. "I'm sorry. The hunters' base blocked my tracker. It took me a long time to find you.

"I'm sorry, Selena. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Please don't be afraid. No matter what happened, I love you."

Love me?

I almost laughed. What a joke.

He took off his jacket and wrapped it around my ruined body, then scooped me up and ran.

I was taken to the hospital. Wolves from the pack came as soon as they heard, and when they saw what I looked like now, every single one of them went silent.

Even my father, the Alpha, a man who never showed emotion, had tears in his eyes.

The silver blades had severed the tendons in my hands and feet, which meant I might never be able to shift again. Everything below my waist was destroyed, and the rest of me was covered in silver burns and wolfsbane corrosion. The surgeon kept shaking his head as he worked.

After the surgery, I was moved to a recovery room. Rex came to see me.

He sat at my bedside, cold tears falling onto my face. "Selena, I'm sorry. I failed you. I swear, for the rest of my life, I will never let anyone hurt you again."

Before all this, seeing him like that would have had me sitting up to comfort him and tell him it was okay. Now all I felt was disgust, pure and overwhelming.

A sound came from the doorway.

"Rex, are you hungry? I brought you something to eat." Vera walked in with a smile on her face.

Rex let go of my hand and turned her down without even looking at her. "I can't eat right now. Go ahead without me. And go back to the territory with the rest of the pack later. The hospital isn't safe."

"I don't want to go by myself. I'm scared." Vera's voice went soft and pleading. "Can't you come with me?"

"No. I need to stay with Selena." He didn't even hesitate.

"But I'm really, really scared..."

And just like that, he wavered.

He caved in the end. "Let me go talk to the Alpha. I'll ask him to send someone to watch over Selena in my place."

He always said I was the only one he loved. But when it came to Vera, he went soft every single time. He couldn't say no to her, no matter what she asked.

The second Rex turned and walked out the door, Vera dropped the act. She walked over to my bed and slapped me across the face.

  • His Biggest Regret: Choosing Her Over Me   Chapter 11

Selena's POVI settled into my new life quickly. My new home was in a valley on the edge of the forest. My parents were gentle, ordinary wolves, and I had a little pup of a sibling who had just learned to run and followed me everywhere. There were no family vendettas, no pack wars, and no love that demanded I sacrifice my life to sustain it. Life was calm and easy.Every day, I went hunting in the forest with my father. In the evenings, I came home and helped my mother prepare what we'd caught. At night, I lay on the grass and watched the stars. The days passed one after another, and all that love and hatred I'd carried with me really did start to fade. One snowy winter, I was sitting by the fire outside the cabin with a freshly roasted sweet potato in my hands when I heard a faint howl in the distance. It sounded so much like the way Rex used to call for me in the forest, all those years ago.My hands stilled on the sweet potato, but I didn't look up or stand. I just blew on th

  • His Biggest Regret: Choosing Her Over Me   Chapter 10

Selena's POVWhen I opened my eyes again, I was back in that strange room."It worked! Selena, it worked!"The System and the other elders erupted into cheers around me, as if I were some kind of returning hero. The gray-robed elder walked over to me with a warm smile. "Selena, what identity would you like to be reborn as?"I blinked, caught off guard. "I can't just go back to my old world and be Selena again?"He shook his head with regret. "I'm afraid not. You've already died, child. That's the law, and no one can change it. But you can go to a new world and live on with a new identity."I went quiet as something heavy and sad settled over me that I couldn't quite name.I flipped through the list the System had given me. It was full of all kinds of lives, from heiresses to pop stars to corporate executives.I skimmed through them all and, in the end, picked an ordinary wolf in a werewolf world. The elder looked surprised for a moment, then smiled and nodded. "That's a good

  • His Biggest Regret: Choosing Her Over Me   Chapter 9

Selena's POVRex looked up at me, desperate and pleading. "Selena, look at how much it hurts. I really do love you. I want to be with you."He crawled toward me like a wounded animal desperate for one last scrap of mercy.I stepped back, unmoved, and shook my head. "But I don't want to be with you. I will never, ever forgive you."Rex froze where he was, his face twisted in pain and disbelief. "Why? You wouldn't have said that before. You always had a soft spot for me. Why won't you give me one more chance? I only made one mistake."I looked at him, and all I felt was emptiness."There were so many ways to save Vera from that fate. You could have stepped in yourself. You had more than enough power. You could have wiped out the hunters before they ever got to her, or you could have assigned warriors to protect her."You had all those options, Rex, and you chose to make me suffer in her place. I really have to wonder if you ever loved me at all."He was smart. If he'd truly wante

Selena's POV"Selena!"I jolted awake and found myself lying in an unfamiliar room. Several elderly figures in gray robes stood around me, none of whom I recognized. The room looked like some kind of ancient council hall, with blue flames burning in the fireplace. But modern electronic equipment sat in the corners, oddly out of place."Where am I? Who are you?"One of the robed elders stepped forward with a kind smile. "Selena, I struck a deal with the Moon Goddess to retrieve your soul from her."That only made me more wary. "The Moon Goddess? A deal? What do you want from me?"He sighed and spoke slowly. "I can bring you back to life. The condition is that you stop Rex from continuing to break the rules of the novel world. As we speak, the werewolf world you come from is on the verge of collapse."I felt nothing."Then let it collapse. What does it have to do with me?"I was already dead, and whether some fictional world fell apart or not meant nothing to a dead she-wolf. M

  • His Biggest Regret: Choosing Her Over Me   Chapter 7

Third-Person POV Pain exploded inside Rex's head, sharp and relentless, like a thousand needles driving in at once. The pain blacked out his vision and sent cold sweat pouring down his face.It was worse than any punishment he'd ever felt for letting his heart fall for Selena before, as if his very soul was being ripped in two. When the worst of it finally eased, he slowly raised his head. His eyes had a wild, unhinged look to them.He reached out to the System, his voice raw and hoarse. "If I give Vera her original fate back and make her the supporting character again, would Selena come back?"The System's voice carried a note of worry and resignation. "Rex, calm down. Vera is already the new female lead of this world. Her fate has been rewritten. The past can't be changed, and Selena isn't coming back."Rex let out a hollow laugh. "Not coming back? Then everyone responsible for her death is going in the ground with her."He went to find Vera. The moment Vera saw him, she tug

Third-Person POV The System's voice sighed inside Rex's head."Yes, Rex. Selena was pregnant. I was going to tell you. Your pup miscarried during the seventh round of torture."Selena's body had been ravaged by silver so badly that the pup couldn't hold on. It was the pain that forced it out of her."And I just checked the logs. Selena tried to contact you while they were torturing her. She was probably trying to call for help, but she must have overheard our conversation and given up."Rex's legs buckled, and he crashed to the ground. His ears were ringing so loudly that he couldn't make out any sound around him.He gripped the pregnancy test result so hard that his knuckles went white. The edges crumpled under his fingers, creasing and folding like he was trying to press the paper into his own skin.He remembered the day they'd set out on the raid against the hunters. Selena had been leaning against his chest, her eyes soft, telling him she'd been feeling nauseous lately and
