Chapter 3

Author: Tiptik
Selena's POV

"Selena, look at yourself. Where's that high-and-mighty Alpha's daughter now?" Vera stared down at me, her eyes full of mockery and satisfaction.

"How did you not just die in there? I heard the hunters really did a number on you. Your hands and feet are done for, and the doctors say your wolf spirit is so damaged that you'll never shift again. How sad."

I forced my eyes open and fixed her with a cold stare.

"Even with things like this, you'll never be Rex's mate."

Her obsession with Rex was practically unhinged, but he'd never once returned her feelings.

Vera's expression shifted, then she let out a scornful laugh. "Don't get too smug. You have no idea, do you? Rex brought me back here so he could steal the credit for your mission and give it to me.

"The raid on the hunters' base, everything your warriors fought for, that's all about to be mine. The recognition, the money, the power. And you're nothing now, just a useless cripple."

Fury surged through me. I scraped together every ounce of strength I had left to force the words out of my throat.

"You're both... shameless."

The raid had been a routine assignment. Father received orders from the Alpha King and took me and a squad of pack warriors to carry it out. Rex insisted on tagging along, saying he was worried about me.

It turned out he wasn't there to protect me. He was there to deliver me to my own torture.

And now, the credit for capturing the hunters' leader, something our pack had lost two warriors to achieve, was about to be handed to Vera.

Vera picked up a syringe from the tray. While I lay there unable to move, she jabbed the needle into my vein without a second of hesitation.

"Selena, just die already. Even if you survive, you'll just be clinging to life as a husk, a wolf who has lost her wolf spirit and can't shift. You'd be better off dead."

Her smile turned venomous. "That's a blood toxin. No one's going to be able to save you this time. Goodbye, Selena. And in your next life, try not to fight me over a man."

She laughed and walked out without looking back.

Less than five minutes after Vera left, my vitals started crashing. The monitors shrieked with alarms and doctors and nurses flooded the room in a frenzy.

"Her blood won't clot. If we don't act, she's going to die. She needs to get back to the pack territory now. The coagulant she needs is there."

"The pack is three hours away by ground. She doesn't have that kind of time." The staff were panicking, talking over each other.

Then one of them stopped mid-sentence, his eyes going wide. "Wait. Her mate Rex just requisitioned a helicopter. He can fly her back."

Hope flickered through me.

They rushed my gurney toward the airfield. When we got there, we ran straight into Rex and Vera, already about to leave.

Gray Hollowell, one of the pack warriors Father had sent along, grabbed Rex by the arm. "Rex, hurry! Let Selena on first! She's deteriorating fast. If she doesn't get back to the pack, she's going to die!"

  • His Biggest Regret: Choosing Her Over Me   Chapter 11

Selena's POVI settled into my new life quickly. My new home was in a valley on the edge of the forest. My parents were gentle, ordinary wolves, and I had a little pup of a sibling who had just learned to run and followed me everywhere. There were no family vendettas, no pack wars, and no love that demanded I sacrifice my life to sustain it. Life was calm and easy.Every day, I went hunting in the forest with my father. In the evenings, I came home and helped my mother prepare what we'd caught. At night, I lay on the grass and watched the stars. The days passed one after another, and all that love and hatred I'd carried with me really did start to fade. One snowy winter, I was sitting by the fire outside the cabin with a freshly roasted sweet potato in my hands when I heard a faint howl in the distance. It sounded so much like the way Rex used to call for me in the forest, all those years ago.My hands stilled on the sweet potato, but I didn't look up or stand. I just blew on th

Selena's POVWhen I opened my eyes again, I was back in that strange room."It worked! Selena, it worked!"The System and the other elders erupted into cheers around me, as if I were some kind of returning hero. The gray-robed elder walked over to me with a warm smile. "Selena, what identity would you like to be reborn as?"I blinked, caught off guard. "I can't just go back to my old world and be Selena again?"He shook his head with regret. "I'm afraid not. You've already died, child. That's the law, and no one can change it. But you can go to a new world and live on with a new identity."I went quiet as something heavy and sad settled over me that I couldn't quite name.I flipped through the list the System had given me. It was full of all kinds of lives, from heiresses to pop stars to corporate executives.I skimmed through them all and, in the end, picked an ordinary wolf in a werewolf world. The elder looked surprised for a moment, then smiled and nodded. "That's a good

Selena's POVRex looked up at me, desperate and pleading. "Selena, look at how much it hurts. I really do love you. I want to be with you."He crawled toward me like a wounded animal desperate for one last scrap of mercy.I stepped back, unmoved, and shook my head. "But I don't want to be with you. I will never, ever forgive you."Rex froze where he was, his face twisted in pain and disbelief. "Why? You wouldn't have said that before. You always had a soft spot for me. Why won't you give me one more chance? I only made one mistake."I looked at him, and all I felt was emptiness."There were so many ways to save Vera from that fate. You could have stepped in yourself. You had more than enough power. You could have wiped out the hunters before they ever got to her, or you could have assigned warriors to protect her."You had all those options, Rex, and you chose to make me suffer in her place. I really have to wonder if you ever loved me at all."He was smart. If he'd truly wante

Selena's POV"Selena!"I jolted awake and found myself lying in an unfamiliar room. Several elderly figures in gray robes stood around me, none of whom I recognized. The room looked like some kind of ancient council hall, with blue flames burning in the fireplace. But modern electronic equipment sat in the corners, oddly out of place."Where am I? Who are you?"One of the robed elders stepped forward with a kind smile. "Selena, I struck a deal with the Moon Goddess to retrieve your soul from her."That only made me more wary. "The Moon Goddess? A deal? What do you want from me?"He sighed and spoke slowly. "I can bring you back to life. The condition is that you stop Rex from continuing to break the rules of the novel world. As we speak, the werewolf world you come from is on the verge of collapse."I felt nothing."Then let it collapse. What does it have to do with me?"I was already dead, and whether some fictional world fell apart or not meant nothing to a dead she-wolf. M

  • His Biggest Regret: Choosing Her Over Me   Chapter 7

Third-Person POV Pain exploded inside Rex's head, sharp and relentless, like a thousand needles driving in at once. The pain blacked out his vision and sent cold sweat pouring down his face.It was worse than any punishment he'd ever felt for letting his heart fall for Selena before, as if his very soul was being ripped in two. When the worst of it finally eased, he slowly raised his head. His eyes had a wild, unhinged look to them.He reached out to the System, his voice raw and hoarse. "If I give Vera her original fate back and make her the supporting character again, would Selena come back?"The System's voice carried a note of worry and resignation. "Rex, calm down. Vera is already the new female lead of this world. Her fate has been rewritten. The past can't be changed, and Selena isn't coming back."Rex let out a hollow laugh. "Not coming back? Then everyone responsible for her death is going in the ground with her."He went to find Vera. The moment Vera saw him, she tug

Third-Person POV The System's voice sighed inside Rex's head."Yes, Rex. Selena was pregnant. I was going to tell you. Your pup miscarried during the seventh round of torture."Selena's body had been ravaged by silver so badly that the pup couldn't hold on. It was the pain that forced it out of her."And I just checked the logs. Selena tried to contact you while they were torturing her. She was probably trying to call for help, but she must have overheard our conversation and given up."Rex's legs buckled, and he crashed to the ground. His ears were ringing so loudly that he couldn't make out any sound around him.He gripped the pregnancy test result so hard that his knuckles went white. The edges crumpled under his fingers, creasing and folding like he was trying to press the paper into his own skin.He remembered the day they'd set out on the raid against the hunters. Selena had been leaning against his chest, her eyes soft, telling him she'd been feeling nauseous lately and
