The camp of the rogues was nothing like I imagined.
Just tents here and there. There was no grand hall or chandeliers . Just that leather patched tents, a fire pit that was more of smoke, than fire... And wolves that watched every step I take like I was a predator.
I stayed as close as I was allowed to Nicolas side. Pressing in on his back.
"Stop hiding behind me,"He murmured without looking at me. "Keep your eyes straight ahead. You owe no body. And whatever you do, don't let them see you tremble "
I bit the inside ofy cheek till I tasted copper. Easier said than done.
As we approached the largest tent,a woman stepped out from the tent. A pissed off look visible on her face.
She wasn't happy to have me here, that alone was obvious.
She was lean, sharp jawed. If I didn't know better I will think she was harmless... But I knew she was far from being a harmless she wolf.
Her eyes swept over me once, then back to Nicholas.
"This her?"The woman's voice wasn't what I expected,it was like gravel.
"Yeah. This is her,"Nicholas said. "Raven, meet Lyra. And exiled Omega. Fated to Aiden the Alpha of Howler's Pack but was rejected during the Royal Mating Ceremony"
Wow.. he was very specific.
Raven's brows lifted, her face softening as she looked at me again.
"That's a lot of tragedy for one day for such a small thing "
I wasn't small... I wanted to say but I couldn't alter a word. I wanted to shrink back to Nicholas side, but I held it in. Instead I lifted my eyes just as he had told me to,and looked straight at her.
Raven's brows lifted again, but this time in amazement. Then she laughed, low and rough. "Oh she's got a spine after all. Come on little wolf, let's see if we can keep you alive."
She turned and walked back into the tent, laughing all the way.
Did I just gain myself a new friend?
I looked at Nicholas not knowing what to do.
"Go on,"He said. "You are lucky she likes you. Raven doesn't gives an offer twice"
Looked like I really gained myself a new friend. Without wasting time,I ducked inside.
The tent didn't smell like the expensive scents that runs through the hall of Howler's Pack. No. It smelled like herbs and oiled leather.
A cot sat in one corner of the tent,a table that was covered with maps in another side of the tent. Everywhere looked organized and neat.
Raven practically threw herself onto a stool and gestured for me to sit across from her. And I did, without waiting for her to tell me again.
It would be for my own good to get into her favour.
"You know, you're not the first rejected mate to come into my camp,"She said, lighting a cigarette. " And you will definitely not be the last I tell you."She blow the smoke of the cigarette right of my face and the smoke made it's way into my nose then straight down into my lungs.
She watched me as I struggled not to cough or block my nose from the smoke. When she saw I didn't give in she smiled and places the cigarette on an ashtray that was by her side, using the tip of her fingers to stub it out.
"But what's got the wolves talking, and what got me interested in you,is that you are the first who came with Nicholas Redrock at her heel"
I blinked. "Nicholas Redrock?"
Raven's eyes narrowed. "Who blindly follows a man she doesn't know?"
She must think I am stupid... Or maybe I was a little bit stupid. But what would I have done? Stayed back alone in the forest with rogues roaming about?
"I just know his name is Nicholas,"I said slowly. "And I saved me from two rogues. He doesn't look like one that will hurt me"
Raven laughed. Really hard. She looked at me like I was unbelievable then she reached for for a cloth and began wiping down a blade she took out from her ankle.
"Nicholas Redrock that I know, doesn't go around saving damsel in distress. He doesn't save people,"She said slowly. "He collects informations that are important, that matters to him. If he brought you here, you matter to him. The question is,do you even know why?"
I didn't.
But I remembered the way he had looked at me in the woods. Not the way Aiden had looked at me – with destiny and fear tangled together. No. Nicholas had looked at me like I was a sort of puzzle he hadn't solved yet.
"I don't know why."I admitted.
Raven shrugged. "That's good. We will have to find out together. Don't we?"
I nodded my head not knowing what else to say.
Raven stood up from the stool and I quickly jumped up to my feet as well.
"For now ,you eat, sleep. And then tomorrow, you learn how to use a knife."
How to use a knife? I have never held a weapon before.
"I'm an Omega,"I said quietly. "We are not taught how to fight or use weapons."
Raven's smile was thin. "You are no longer in your Pack little wolf. You are now a rogue. And in this camp, everyone learns how to fight. Because that's your only means of survival."
She walked to where a pile of clothes were kept and tossed a thick thin blanket at me.
"Sleep. You are going to need all your strength tomorrow."Then she left the tent, leaving me all alone in the big space.
That night, curled on the cold ground with my blanket wrapped tightly around me,I stared at the canvas above me and listened to the camp laughter and chatters until the noise settled.
I took a deep breath, thinking about everything that had happened. I should have felt relief that I wasn't dead or torn apart by those rogues.
But all I felt was the emptiness. The hollow space where the mate bond used to be.
And then as my eyes grew heavy, the world shifted.
Lyra's POVI heard it before anyone else did.Not with my ears — with the fire. It woke inside my chest like something startled from sleep, pressing outward against my ribs, urgent and directionless, the way it always did when something was wrong before the world caught up to knowing it.I was on my feet before my eyes fully opened. The camp was dark. The blood moon was still a day away, the sky above the tree line the deep, indifferent black of early morning, stars scattered and cold. Everything looked still. But the fire didn't lie."Up." I hit the side of Raven's tent as I passed it. "Get up. Now.""Lyra—""Now, Raven."I was already moving toward the northern ridge, pulling my hair back with one hand, the silver flame rising in the other without being asked. It cast the path ahead in pale light, long shadows jumping between the trees.I heard the first howl a second later. Then three more, overlapping, ragged — not a patrol signal. A warning. Then the screaming started. They came
Aiden's POVShe came to the war room at dawn, exactly as she'd promised. No Nicholas trailing behind her this time. Just Lyra, her hair still damp from washing, dressed in the leathers that Raven had given her, instead of anything that belonged to the pack.I tried not to notice how well they suited her."You wanted to talk battle plans," she said, stopping at the edge of the table. Not crossing it,she kept the wood between us like a wall she'd built on purpose."I did." I cleared my throat and forced my eyes to the map instead of her face. "The scouts spotted the first of the Rogue King's forces moving through the northern pass last night. If they keep that pace, they'll reach the valley by tomorrow's dusk. Right as the blood moon rises.""Of course they will." Her mouth twisted, bitter. "He's always had a flair for theater.""You know him.""I know what twenty years of hatred does to a person who used to be an Alpha." She moved closer to the map, studying the markers Grayson had pin
Lyra's POVI didn't sleep. Not because of Aiden, though his face kept surfacing in my mind no matter how many times I pushed it under. It was the bond. Even faint and frayed as it was, it pulsed against my ribs all night like a second, struggling heartbeat, and every time it stuttered, I felt it in my teeth.By the time the sky turned gray, I was already dressed and standing outside Raven's borrowed tent, watching the pack wake around me.They didn't look at me the way they used to.There was no sneering, no whispered "omega" passed between cupped hands. Now they looked at me like I was something they didn't have a name for yet. Not enemy. Not quite pack. Something standing in the doorway between both."You look like you haven't slept," Nicholas said, appearing beside me with two cups of something hot. He handed me one without asking if I wanted it, which was, I was starting to realize, simply how he loved people."I haven't.""Aiden?""The bond." I wrapped my hands around the cup,
Aiden's POVShe walked out of my office without looking back."I wish you won't make my staying here harder than it already is."Her words cut deeper than any blade could.I stood there for a long moment, staring at the door she had disappeared through. The map was still spread across the table. The candles were still burning. But everything felt colder than before. She was here. Lyra was here, and yet she felt so far away. And she even came with another man.The rogue. Nicholas. The way he had stood by the door, watching me like a wolf protecting his territory. The way he had growled at me—growled—like I was the enemy.Like I was the one who didn't belong in my own pack, made me feel all sorts of emotions that I didn't like."Alpha."Grayson's voice pulled me from my thoughts. I hadn't heard him enter,I have been so distracted these days that I'm hardly aware of the presence of someone."What?""The rogues are settling in the eastern barracks. Lyra requested a tent near the training y
Lyra's POVI made the decision to go back to Howler in the middle of the night.I laid on my cot, staring at the canvas ceiling, listening to the chatters of the people. Nicholas was somewhere nearby—I could feel him through the fragile bond we'd been building. Raven was on patrol. Sera was sleeping in a tent of her own.But Howler was dying."If you are not at Howler by then—if the pack does not have its true Luna—everyone dies."The Moon Goddess's words echoed in my head, loud enough that I couldn't shut it off even though I wanted to.I sat up on the cot"Lyra?" Nicholas's voice came from outside my tent. "You okay?""I need to go back." I said. There was silence for some time, then the tent flap opened and Nicholas stepped inside, his face shadowed in the darkness."Go back where?" He asked."Howler." I said swinging my legs over the side of the cot. "The pack needs me. The Moon Goddess said—""I don't care what the Moon Goddess said." He said with a tight voice. "You can't go back
Nicholas POVIt was getting dark when I found Lyra and a Lycan woman I didn't recognize, stumbling out of the treeline, half-dead, covered in blood and ash and something that looked like silver light still clinging to Lyra's skin.My heart stopped for a movement, then it started again, pounding so hard I thought my ribs would crack."Lyra!" I found my foot running towards her before I could think. As she saw me,her face crumpled. And then she was running too, closing the distance between us, crashing into my chest so hard I nearly fell backward."I thought I lost you," I whispered into her hair."You didn't." Her voice was muffled against my shirt. "I'm here. I'm okay."I held her tighter, not wanting to let go,and I was planning on doing that if the lycan woman didn't clear her throat."I'm Sera," she said, like I cared. "I helped her escape. The Rogue King is going to come looking for her. Soon."I pulled back from Lyra but didn't let go. My eyes scanned her face, her arms, her hands,f
Lyra's POVThe Moon Goddess stood at the foot of my cell, smiling down at me.She was more radiant than I remembered. Her hair flowed like liquid moonlight, her gown shimmered with stars. But her eyes—her eyes held a sorrow that made my chest ache.“ My child," she said. Her voice warm and terrifyi
Lyra's POVI woke up to find myself on a cold stone with chains around my wrists.“Finally.”Someone said from the shadows. The voice was deep, and familiar, like a voice I have heard repeatedly in my dreams.I didn't want to believe it. I didn't want to believe this was how I was going to meet my
Aiden's POVThe pack bond frayed like a rope coming undone.I felt it every morning when I woke up. Every night when I tried to sleep. A hollow ache where the connection to my wolves used to be strongest. At first, I told myself it was nothing, stress, the weight of leadership, or maybe the afterma
Nicholas's POVI killed four of them.Four Lycans, dead by my claws, before I realized she was gone. The forest was chaos. Finn was bleeding out on the leaves, his arm bent at an angle that made my stomach turn. Marta had managed to escape into the trees, dragging a gash on her leg.But Lyra—Lyra'
