Chapter 6

Logan POV

Logan paced back and forth in front of the door that led into the room where his doctor was examining Emma. Dylan was sitting on the floor with his head in his hands. It seemed like forever before the doctor came out, Logan didn’t like the look on his face.

“How is she?” Logan asked. Dylan raised his head up.

“She isn’t doing well, Alpha. But I need to clarify a few things first.” the doctor said.

Logan nodded his head as Dylan stood up.

“What do you need to know?” Dylan asked.

The doctor turned to Dylan, “Alpha Logan said that Emma is your twin, she five minutes older.”

Dylan nodded.

“And your father had you try to shift before her, correct?”

“Yes.” Dylan answered.

“Is your family’s highborn alpha line pure?” the doctor asked.

“Yes, but what does that have to do with anything?” asked Dylan.

The doctor sighed. “If you had completed your shift, you would have killed her.”

“Oh my goddess!” Dylan exclaimed. Logan’s heart dropped.

“You didn’t complete your shift, but enough damage was done. It’s going to take a few days for her to heal.” It was the doctor’s turn to sigh. “She has to shift first, it is how things are meant to go. She is the oldest, she is the alpha, she shifts first. If you try to forcibly take the alpha from her, she dies.”

“So what do we do?” Logan asked.

“Call Elder Michael. He will know more about this than I will.”

Logan nodded.

“She is awake, you both can go in and see her. But don’t get her upset or stressed, it will slow her healing.” the doctor told them.

“Thank you, Patrick.” Logan told the doctor.

“You're welcome, Alpha.” and the doctor walked down the hallway.

Logan and Dylan walked through the door and into Emma’s hospital room. She was lying propped up on the bed. She looked pale and tired. Logan walked over and took her hand into his.

“Hey sweetheart, how are you feeling?” Logan asked her.

“Like I fell off a trellis and hit the ground.” She smiled.

“Not funny Em.” Dylan said. “You scared the hell out of us.”

“Yes, you did.” Logan told her.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I don’t know what happened.”

Logan sighed. “It was Dylan’s shift. Since you are older, you need to shift first, if Dylan had completed his shift, it would have killed you.”

Emma looked at Dylan “You are supposed to protect me little brother, not kill me.”

Dylan was on the opposite side of the bed from Logan. He picked up her other hand in his.

“If I had known it was going to kill you, I would have told dad to shove being alpha up his ass.”

The look on his face, Logan knew he meant every word he said.

“Let’s just get you better. That starts with you resting.” He told her, then turned to Dylan. “I will stay with her. I’ll have my beta come and get you and you can stay in one of the guest rooms at my house.”

“No, you don’t need to stay with me, go home, you need rest too.” Emma told Logan.

"I’m staying with you.” Logan replied.

“Absolutely not. Go home and rest. Besides, I can’t rest knowing that you aren’t getting rest because of me.” she winked at him and smiled.

Logan would do anything for her, but leaving her while she was like this, was almost too much to ask of him, but he resigned.

“Ok, fine. But I will be back to check on you first thing in the morning. In the meantime, sleep.”

“Will do.” Emma said.

Logan leaned down and kissed her gently on her lips.

“Call me if you need anything at all.” Logan said.

“I will.”

Logan had to force himself to walk out the door, looking back at his mate, he seen her eyes were already closed and he could hear her softly snoring. Dylan following behind him, they made their way to his car and then to Logan’s house. As they walked in, his head of staff came up.

“Dylan, this is Patricia, my head of staff. Patricia, please take Dylan upstairs to a guest room.” he told her.

“Yes, Alpha.” She replied.

Logan turned to Dylan, “My room is on the second floor. There is a phone in each room, if you press one it goes to my office, two goes to my room. If you need anything just let me know.”

“Thanks Alpha Logan.”

Logan shook his head, “Just call me Logan. Alpha is a little too formal for family.”

Dylan smiled and followed Logan’s head of staff up the stairs. Logan walked into his office and found the number for Elder Michael and was about to call him when he seen the time on his phone was after two in the morning. He would call him tomorrow after he went to the hospital to check on Emma.

He walked out of his office and to his room, walking over to the bar and pouring some whiskey into a glass. He walked over to his bedroom window and pulled back the curtain and looked out. He could see the hospital from his room. He took a drink of the whiskey. He thought about going back and slipping into her room anyway, but he knew she would be pissed if she woke up and found him there. He drank the rest of the whiskey and walked back over to the bar and poured another glass, drinking the second in one drink. He pulled off his clothes and crawled into his bed.

He couldn’t believe Emma was actually here, granted she was in a hospital bed instead of his, but she was here, in his territory, and in a few days, she would be in his bed, their bed. His head was fuzzy from the whiskey and helped him slip off to sleep.
