The room was weakly bright, the torches barely lighted the cold stone walls. I stood in the middle of my room, and my hands were resting on my swollen belly. My heart pounded as I watched Lucian move back and forth, his face set in stone. “You can’t mean this,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “You can’t want me to kill our child.” He stopped and turned to face me, his eyes sharp and cold. The man I had loved, the man I had given everything for, was gone. I couldn't believe Lucian would hurt me with his words, hurt us with his actions. “This isn’t about what I want,” he said flatly. “The seer’s prophecy is clear. The child will destroy everything we’ve built. How can you not see?” “No!” I shook my head, my voice rising. “The prophecy is not a death sentence. It doesn’t mean it will happen. Lucian, this is our child! How can you even consider this?” His jaw tightened. “Because I have to. This kingdom comes first. Always. And you know that better than anyone” I stepped closer, my hand reaching out to him. “We built this kingdom together, Lucian, we did and I know what it is. Don’t throw it away because of fear. Don’t throw me away.” His expression didn’t change. “You have a choice, Hayley,” he said, his voice low and cutting. “Go to the healer and remove this pregnancy, or leave the palace. You can’t stay here if you’re going to defy me. You pick, me or your insensitive thinking” My legs wobbled, and I sank to the floor, clutching my stomach. Tears blurred my vision as I looked up at him. “How can you say that to me? How can you ask me to do this? I love this child. I love you. Don’t make me choose.” “You already made your choice,” he said coldly, turning his back on me. “You’ve chosen to put your feelings above the kingdom.” I knelt there on the cold floor, tears streaming down my face. “I can’t lose my baby,” I whispered, more to myself than to him. “Not because of some god-damned prophecy.” He didn’t answer. He didn’t even look at me nstead, he walked toward the door and paused. “Don’t come back inside until you’ve thought this through and come to your senses.” The heavy doors shut behind him, leaving me alone in the empty hall. The sound echoed through the silence, and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I stayed there for hours, the cold seeping into my skin. The torches burned low, and the darkness crept in around me. I couldn’t think, couldn’t move. My mind raced with thoughts of my baby, of the man I thought I knew, of the kingdom I had fought so hard to help him build. *** By morning, I still hadn’t slept. My eyes were swollen, my body stiff from sitting on the hard ground all night. The early morning sun lit into the room and gave me a bit of energy even with my swollen eyes. I stood, smoothing my dress and lifting my chin. If Lucian thought he could scare me into submission, he was wrong. I would face him, not as a frightened wife but as the queen I had always been. The throne room was already crowded when I arrived. Nobles lined the walls, whispering to one another as they watched me enter. My steps echoed in the vast chamber as I made my way to my throne beside Lucian’s. I didn’t get far. The great doors opened, and the guards marched in, dragging a man between them. My breath caught in my throat when I saw who it was. “Father?” I whispered, my voice trembling. His face was bruised, his hands bound in chains, but his eyes were steady as they met mine. Lucian rose from his throne, his voice booming across the hall. “Counsel Garian is a traitor to the crown. He conspired against me, and for that, he must pay.” “No,” I said, stepping forward. “No, that’s not true. My father would never betray you. He’s loyal to the kingdom.” ucian’s gaze turned to me, cold and unyielding. “He plotted against me, Hayley. The punishment for treason is death.” My heart stopped. I looked at him, trying to find some trace of the man I loved, but there was nothing. Just the king. “Lucian, please,” I begged. “This is my father. You don’t have to do this.” He ignored me and nodded to the guards. They forced my father to his knees. I rushed forward, tears streaming down my face. “Lucian, I’m begging you! Please, don’t do this!” Two guards stepped in my path, blocking me from reaching him. My father turned his head slightly, giving me a small, sad smile. The sword came down before I could scream. His head rolled to the floor, and the room went silent. I stared at my father's dead body, shaking and sobbing. “How could you?” I cried, looking up at Lucian. “How could you kill him? He could take my father away from me!” He stepped down from the throne, his cold face still intact. “Your father is dead,” he said simply. “Now you have no one left except me.” I pushed myself up to my feet, my body trembling with rage and grief. “I have stood by you through everything,” I said, my voice shaking. “I’ve been faithful to you, Lucian. I’ve fought for you. I’ve loved you. And this is how you repay me? You’ve turned your back on me, on our unborn child, and now you’ve killed my father.” His eyes narrowed, and he stepped closer. “You’ve given me no choice, Hayley,” he said. “You’ve defied me at every turn. You’re a threat to my rule. I warned you” Before I could move, he pulled a dagger from his belt and thrust it into my stomach. I gasped, clutching at the blade as blood spread across my dress. My knees buckled, and I fell to the ground. I looked up at him, my vision blurring. “Why?” I whispered, tears streaming down my face. “Why would you do this?”Lorenzo's POVI was close to shifting. I could feel the rage in my wolf and the sudden energy radiating through my veins. I didn't need to look around. Golf Palace was already empty. No one would dare to witness a fight between two giant Alpha Wolves. Not even Damon, who stood at the entrance of the club, fidgety, waiting for the right time to escape. But I didn't let that happen. I couldn't. Not when I'd actually started the fight. Or when Lucian was looking to make a fool of me. The little ruby wasn't worth an iota of my attention, much less my wrath.“Let's get out of here Damon,” I finally said, letting out a long stream of breath to release my anger. “I shouldn't wreck a million-dollar investment because of a loser.”“Is that true Enzo?” Lucian scoffed, “Because from the looks of things, you're the scared one. In fact, your life is centred around fear. You're afraid to lose your kingdom, your wife, your business and then your stupid and weak wolf. I'm no match for you, Enzo, and
Stella's POV I watched Fiyero crash into one of the chairs in the council room, and bury his head between his palms. He was not only sullen, but he was frustrated, even discouraged. I couldn't name my happiness. It was one of those moments I felt my head swell with pride. First I got rid of the Luna's Crest, dashing Hayley's hope of a stable rule, now his alliance with Hayley had been dissolved, and now... The Doctor! Dr Malcolm, that vulture-looking old hag. Yes, Hayley mentioned having an appointment with him. He had been in the service for the pack long before Lorenzo was born. He was good at his field, holding the record for the most impossible surgeries done. I hated that, I hated him. As soon as I heard Hayley close the door of her suit, I slipped out of my Hiding place and dashed after him, calling out his name as he approached his car.“Mr Romano! Can I please talk to you for a minute?”Fiyero heard my voice
Hayley's POV “Stella! Have you lost your mind? You can't address me in that manner.” Are those words, A mischievous glint crossed her face, then a small smile at the corners of her lips. “Very well then. I don't have the Luna's Crest. I think you should return to your suite, for the sake of your baby's health.”“The Crest has something to do with my baby!” I couldn't help the quiver in my lips or the crack in my voice. “There is something terrible happening. I need to have the crest!”“And I already answered. I don't know where it is. I must've said something about a gift, but it isn't that old item. You can go to the moon temple and speak with the nuns, they know more about the edifice than anyone alive.” “But why have you suddenly changed again Stella?” I moved away from the door, but I didn't forget to leave it slightly open. The aura around Stella was once again unfriendly, but I wasn't ready to be deterred
Hayley’s POVI had risen long before the household stirred, slipping quietly into the garden just to avoid Lorenzo. I busied myself with the flower bushes, pruning, trimming, pulling weeds that didn’t need pulling. Truth was, I wasn’t tending to the garden for the sake of beauty. I was hiding. The memory of last night sat heavily in my chest. My heart still hadn’t recovered from it. We had just begun to find some rhythm together after so many years of living like strangers. So when I heard the sound of his car starting. I finally allowed myself to breathe. Relief washed over me. I dusted soil from my fingers, abandoned the garden, and hurried inside. My feet carried me to the upper floor, toward Stella’s chambers. Perhaps she could give me some answers, though a part of me knew approaching her was dangerous. Still, something pulled me there.I knocked softly. Silence.I waited. Knocked again.Sti
Lorenzo’s POVThe morning sun did nothing to warm me. It only sharpened the ache I carried from the night before. My throat still felt raw from the words I had hurled at Hayley, words I wished I could take back.I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the empty side where she should have been. No imprint on the sheets, no warmth. She hadn’t returned after leaving in the middle of the night, or perhaps she had returned briefly, then risen before dawn just to avoid me.Either way, she wasn't beside me.I dragged a hand over my face, heavy with guilt. What had I done?It felt as if, after years of cold distance, she and I had just begun to find each other again. The bond we had ignored for so long had started to grow quietly between us. But I had shattered it last night in my temper, in my suspicion.I should have spoken gently. I should have asked instead of accused. But patience had never been my virtue, a
Stella’s POVThe walls in Lorenzo’s mansion were thinner than he realized. Or maybe I had simply grown too skilled at lingering in shadows, pressing myself into corners where I could drink in every word not meant for me. I had attained a deeper height in eavesdropping, good for me. From the hallway outside their room, I heard the first sharp edge in his voice.“Who took this picture?”A pause. The sound of rustling fabric. Then Hayley’s voice, uncertain, too soft for my liking.“Why are you asking me?”I smiled, tilting my head against the wall. My plan had landed exactly where I wanted it to. The picture I slipped into his path like poison in a wine glass had found its mark. Now, the venom worked through both their veins.“You and Fiyero,” Lorenzo snapped, the words hard enough to slice. “Why were you seen together like this?”The smile curved wider on my lips. Oh, Lorenzo. How quick you were to doubt. How easy it was to plant rot in the garden of your so-called trust.I leaned agai
