The room was weakly bright, the torches barely lighted the cold stone walls. I stood in the middle of my room, and my hands were resting on my swollen belly. My heart pounded as I watched Lucian move back and forth, his face set in stone. “You can’t mean this,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “You can’t want me to kill our child.” He stopped and turned to face me, his eyes sharp and cold. The man I had loved, the man I had given everything for, was gone. I couldn't believe Lucian would hurt me with his words, hurt us with his actions. “This isn’t about what I want,” he said flatly. “The seer’s prophecy is clear. The child will destroy everything we’ve built. How can you not see?” “No!” I shook my head, my voice rising. “The prophecy is not a death sentence. It doesn’t mean it will happen. Lucian, this is our child! How can you even consider this?” His jaw tightened. “Because I have to. This kingdom comes first. Always. And you know that better than anyone” I stepped closer, my hand reaching out to him. “We built this kingdom together, Lucian, we did and I know what it is. Don’t throw it away because of fear. Don’t throw me away.” His expression didn’t change. “You have a choice, Hayley,” he said, his voice low and cutting. “Go to the healer and remove this pregnancy, or leave the palace. You can’t stay here if you’re going to defy me. You pick, me or your insensitive thinking” My legs wobbled, and I sank to the floor, clutching my stomach. Tears blurred my vision as I looked up at him. “How can you say that to me? How can you ask me to do this? I love this child. I love you. Don’t make me choose.” “You already made your choice,” he said coldly, turning his back on me. “You’ve chosen to put your feelings above the kingdom.” I knelt there on the cold floor, tears streaming down my face. “I can’t lose my baby,” I whispered, more to myself than to him. “Not because of some god-damned prophecy.” He didn’t answer. He didn’t even look at me nstead, he walked toward the door and paused. “Don’t come back inside until you’ve thought this through and come to your senses.” The heavy doors shut behind him, leaving me alone in the empty hall. The sound echoed through the silence, and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I stayed there for hours, the cold seeping into my skin. The torches burned low, and the darkness crept in around me. I couldn’t think, couldn’t move. My mind raced with thoughts of my baby, of the man I thought I knew, of the kingdom I had fought so hard to help him build. *** By morning, I still hadn’t slept. My eyes were swollen, my body stiff from sitting on the hard ground all night. The early morning sun lit into the room and gave me a bit of energy even with my swollen eyes. I stood, smoothing my dress and lifting my chin. If Lucian thought he could scare me into submission, he was wrong. I would face him, not as a frightened wife but as the queen I had always been. The throne room was already crowded when I arrived. Nobles lined the walls, whispering to one another as they watched me enter. My steps echoed in the vast chamber as I made my way to my throne beside Lucian’s. I didn’t get far. The great doors opened, and the guards marched in, dragging a man between them. My breath caught in my throat when I saw who it was. “Father?” I whispered, my voice trembling. His face was bruised, his hands bound in chains, but his eyes were steady as they met mine. Lucian rose from his throne, his voice booming across the hall. “Counsel Garian is a traitor to the crown. He conspired against me, and for that, he must pay.” “No,” I said, stepping forward. “No, that’s not true. My father would never betray you. He’s loyal to the kingdom.” ucian’s gaze turned to me, cold and unyielding. “He plotted against me, Hayley. The punishment for treason is death.” My heart stopped. I looked at him, trying to find some trace of the man I loved, but there was nothing. Just the king. “Lucian, please,” I begged. “This is my father. You don’t have to do this.” He ignored me and nodded to the guards. They forced my father to his knees. I rushed forward, tears streaming down my face. “Lucian, I’m begging you! Please, don’t do this!” Two guards stepped in my path, blocking me from reaching him. My father turned his head slightly, giving me a small, sad smile. The sword came down before I could scream. His head rolled to the floor, and the room went silent. I stared at my father's dead body, shaking and sobbing. “How could you?” I cried, looking up at Lucian. “How could you kill him? He could take my father away from me!” He stepped down from the throne, his cold face still intact. “Your father is dead,” he said simply. “Now you have no one left except me.” I pushed myself up to my feet, my body trembling with rage and grief. “I have stood by you through everything,” I said, my voice shaking. “I’ve been faithful to you, Lucian. I’ve fought for you. I’ve loved you. And this is how you repay me? You’ve turned your back on me, on our unborn child, and now you’ve killed my father.” His eyes narrowed, and he stepped closer. “You’ve given me no choice, Hayley,” he said. “You’ve defied me at every turn. You’re a threat to my rule. I warned you” Before I could move, he pulled a dagger from his belt and thrust it into my stomach. I gasped, clutching at the blade as blood spread across my dress. My knees buckled, and I fell to the ground. I looked up at him, my vision blurring. “Why?” I whispered, tears streaming down my face. “Why would you do this?”Hayley's POV “It's good to see you getting along with Stella, I thought you both were going to remain enemies.” “We aren't enemies.” I snapped, rolling my eyes as I lifted the nightgown off the dressing table and put it on. I turned around to return to the bed, but I couldn't help the sharp pain shooting through me. My legs had become swollen with edema, my back felt like plastic, and the painkillers were beginning to mess with my emotions. “I never said you were enemies,” I groaned finally able to lie on the bed and rest my head on the pillow. "I just meant to say you and Stella were usually at loggerheads. She's not all that bad, she's a good girl.” Lorenzo had been standing by the door, a loaf of bread in his right hand, and a cup of water in the other. He looked younger, his eyes sparkling in the fluorescent lights. I wondered how quickly his mood would change if I told him the horrible things I did with Stella. “I think yo
Stella's POV I arched a brow, crossing my arms. “And what would that be?”His lips curved into something between a smirk and a warning. “I want you to go into Lucian’s territory. Spy on him. Find out his next plan.”I let the words sink in, then tilted my head. “And what do I get in return, Lorenzo? I don’t work for free.”“Anything,” he said without hesitation. That word—anything—hung heavy in the air. He thought I was his loyal pawn. He thought wrong. The next morning Lorenzo packaged some instruments for me, oblivious fact that I am allies with Lucian. Oh, sweet foolery. When I arrived at the gate, Lorenzo was already expecting me. He didn't let me stay for a minute, He pressed the bag into my hands at the front doors of the estate, not even asking me to step inside.“Use them wisely,” he said curtly.I gave him a practiced smile. “It will be a pleasure to fulfill the mission.
Stella's POV Okay, I have done well now. Gaining Hayley's trust at the time Lucian's men were about to harm her was a no-brainer. She was seeing me in a different light and I was now a step closer to achieving my aim. First, Lorenzo and then the throne of the Queen. But what about Halley's pregnancy? The fetus was growing, and there was no doubt that its birth would bring Haley and Lorenzo closer to each other. I could not afford that. The child has to go. Hayley remained quiet during the drive, but I could see her thoughts on her face. She was conflicted. Vanya had a point and she was worried about Lucian gaining the upper hand. This conflict was the beginning of her troubles. My aim was to use her against herself. Lorenzo was standing outside the gates, we sighted him the instant we turned into the streets. Dressed in a tank top and black shorts, he looked like a sword was down his throat, the lines on his face formed into a dist
Hayley's POV “What are we doing here Stella!” I turned to her unable to contain my anger. “You really need to calm down,” she whispered. “You said you were going to get solutions, but you have only brought us to our enemies' base.”“Relax,” she said, grabbing my hand. “We should speak to him, I will explain later.” “No!” I snatch my hand out of her grip. “This man walked out on the Alpha and disrespected him publicly.” “And he is ready to do worse.” Stella snapped, “He is the only ally we need. He got the other mafias out of the council room with only a signal from his hand. Don't you understand, he could do more.” I raised my head and took a glance at Vanya now. He sat there, watching as we discussed him as if he weren't present. He looked every bit the schemer, despite the attractive looks and charming personality presented on social media and in the magazines. Anyone with a working brain would know t
Hayley's POV My blood turned cold, my throat closing up as shivers of fear filtered through me. I turned around and looked at the car, it would be impossible for me to sprint towards it and run home. What had I been thinking, this place was out of bounds for me. “Aren't you going to say anything Luna?” one of the men chuckled, “Are you surprised?” “You have no right to sack this place and treat its inhabitants as slaves.” Those words came out with the last boldness left in my mind. I was a ton of miles away from home. Anything could happen right here and now. “Your husband has not yet been declared the king of the realm.” the second man said to me. “You may have the support of the other packs including the minor and the major ones, but the people of the fallen pack will never bow their heads to anyone who is not their own. You waste your time, Lunar Hayley.” He suddenly grabbed my chin and laughed in my face, his breath smelling like rotten eggs and bacteria. I tried to wriggle
Hayley's POV It took everything in me not to grab the stupid mafia man by the neck and strangle him to death. Descendants of my pack were being traded abroad, forced to sell their bodies and engage in manual labour. I never expected this turnout. Not in this manner. I couldn't believe this was how my people had been suffering. "Mr De la Vega I have called us here for something very important," Lorenzo said into the silence obviously noticing the sudden shift in my demeanor. "And what is that supposed to mean," another mafia leader asked. "We are criminals, stylized and dignified ones. You can't give us a curfew.""But I can wage war against you all and have you killed," Lorenzo growled, clenching his fist. I could see the muscles breaking out of his neck and tension descending on the atmosphere. "You need to stop this, all of you. Of course, you play an integral role in the social and economic aspect of the pack but you cannot be allowed any further," he said firmly, rising to h
