Chapter 5

~Sara~

I remained silent, keeping my gaze on him, unsure of what to say. Because, if I heard correctly, he seemed to be aware of the games played by my family.

But was he any different? Getting married to an unmated female?

He might have a bit of conscience, but still, that doesn't make him any more different from them.

So I averted my gaze from him, keeping my eyes on the passing scenery, although I'm quite aware of how my reaction would be perceived. Ignoring the almighty alpha. However, at this point in my life, I really don't care.

I didn't want to do it, but I found myself tilting my head to steal a glance at my husband-to-be, to see what kind of reaction he'd show in response to my attitude. Probably at my audacity to ignore him. But his gaze was fixed on the window beside him, his chin resting on his left palm and, if I was correct, he looked unbothered.

I hated that, somehow, he looked considerate of my dilemma.

'Miss,'

'Miss,' a distant voice called out, rousing me from my slumber. Forcing my eyelids open, I shut them almost immediately, wincing at the brightness of the sun.

"Sorry to disturb you, but we have arrived at The Crescent Moon Pack already." I forced my eyelids open when a guard informed me, a little curious to see what it looked like.

"Thank you," I muttered to the guard as he opened the door for me, stepping out into the serene environment.

The pack house was something I believe would be best defined as perfect, unlike our pack house, which was built a little more like a castle with a predominantly brown palette and a small compound surrounded by a fence. This was a bit more modern.

It had a long driveway, and a huge compound with well-maintained lawns and numerous trees planted all around the house. All of these, safeguarded by a wrought-iron gate that held the fence that extended beyond my sight. The huge pack house itself was painted in a shade of grey and looked exactly like those exotic modern houses I had seen in magazines during my school years, which usually had a pool area. Now I guess this one would have that too, to complete its prestigious appearance.

The best part of this was that, looking outside the gate, it seemed the house was located in a suburban area with neighbors around.

Back at the pack, we never had neighbors because I heard Father say none of the pack members were fit enough to live beside the pack house. So they had to live about a 10 minute drive away from the pack house. Quite stupid, I must say.

I focused my attention back on my husband-to-be as he stood before the house, waiting for my parents, who were walking up to him. The Luna, smiling from ear to ear as she stylishly glanced around the area, obviously trying not to look too fazed by it.

We walked into the living room, escorted by some guards and maids. The interior of the house, much like the exterior, was unlike anything I've ever seen before. It had marble floors, grand chandeliers and a large aquarium on the left side of the huge room that seemed to serve a wall between the living room and what seemed to be a relaxation space. At least, if no one in this pack decides to talk to me, those tiny little fishes would be of great company.

A few minutes later, a maid escorted me to the room I'd be staying in before the wedding. Apparently, the wedding was scheduled for today and my family would likely return to our pack as soon as it's over. And I'll be left here to start a new life as a wife of the highly esteemed alpha. How dreamy!

As I walked into the extravagant room, the first thing I noticed was the door had a lock, so I asked the polite maid who brought in my luggage to excuse me for a while and locked the door the second her feet stepped out of the room. She must've heard it because the sounds were louder than I expected. Or perhaps that's simply how they are. Regardless, that didn't help the embarrassment I was feeling, either.

I treaded cautiously to the window, afraid I would ruin the pretty rug adorning the center of the room's floor, and ran my fingertips gently on the pretty flower in a pretty vase that sat by the window. I'm a little tempted to take a quick glance at myself in the pretty dressing mirror to see if I matched the look of this place. But I didn't want to ruin my feelings and get unnecessarily insecure because I knew what the results would be. So I rested against the window, gazing around the area.

In some way, this doesn't seem like a bad idea. Not the marriage, I mean; the whole marriage thing was a bad idea, a nightmare. But changing environment, after living in that horrible prison—I mean, castle—my whole life, this was undoubtedly a good change.

My head snapped towards the door when I heard the doorknob turn, indicating someone was trying to open it from the other side.

"Who is it?" I asked as I stood against the door, placing my ears on it, as if listening for any sounds would let me immediately know who was behind it.

"Open the damn door." I exhaled and pursed my lips, realizing it was Adam. As soon as I turned the lock open, he forced his way into the room, carelessly tossing a stack of papers onto the bed.

"What is that?"

He scoffed, as if irritated by my question. "Vows, Sara. Marital vows you will recite during the ceremony this evening."

"There are seven of them there. Recite whichever you feel is best and do not mess up anything!" I nodded, and he stared viciously at me one last time before storming out of the room. I immediately rushed to bolt the door lock.

Don't blame me; it feels overwhelming to finally have one common sort of security. I stared at the papers scattered on the bed, and my luggage at the side of the room in front of the wardrobe. If I had a diary, today would definitely be recorded as one of the worst days of my life.
