Three Years Later

Calista’s POV

The first thing I learned after leaving Gerald was that heartbreak did not kill me.

It tried.

There were days when getting out of bed felt like dragging myself through wet cement. Days when I would wake up and forget for a few precious seconds that I was no longer Mrs. Deneuve, only to remember everything all over again.

There were nights I stared at the ceiling until sunrise because my mind refused to stop replaying that day.

The divorce papers.

His face.

Gerald’s POV The first sign that something was wrong came on a Tuesday. It was small enough that I almost ignored it. Ophelia had promised to meet me for dinner. She didn’t show. I checked my watch for the third time before picking up my phone. No message. No call. Nothing. I stared at the screen for a few seconds before locking it. She was probably busy. That was all. People had lives outside of each other. I understood that. So I went back to work. An hour later, my phone finally vibrated. Ophelia: Something came up. Sorry. I stared at the message. That was it. No explanation. No attempt to reschedule. Just four words. I should have been annoyed. Instead, I found myself making excuses for her. Maybe she was tired. Maybe something unexpected happened. Maybe— I stopped myself. This wasn’t important. I had spent years being suspicious of everything Ophelia did because of what happened between us before. I wasn’t going to repeat that mistake now. She deserve

Gerald’s POV She actually left. No argument. No tears. No accusations. She didn’t even ask me to reconsider. She simply signed the papers, packed her things, and walked out of the house we’d shared for three years as though she had already accepted that I was no longer part of her life. I stood there long after the front door closed. The silence that followed was strange. Too sudden. Too complete. For three years, there had always been some evidence of Calista in this house. Her footsteps on the stairs. The sound of dishes in the kitchen. Her music playing somewhere in the background. The occasional laugh when she found something amusing and assumed I was interested enough to listen. Now there was nothing. I looked down at the divorce papers in my hand. Signed. Final. Free. That was what I had wanted. Wasn’t it? I had spent the past few days thinking about Ophelia, about everything we’d once been, about the years we’d lost because of what happened between us. And no

Calista’s POVThe next few days had been unbearable for me. I got to see Ophelia often here at our house, and even days when she didn’t drop by, I knew Gerald had gone out to see her.I refused to think about where I had gone wrong, these past three years. I refused to think about if maybe, I had known about Ophelia, I would’ve cast aside all my emotions and maybe this wouldn’t bother me this much.I refused to think about anything that would make this revelation feel heavier than it was, and I promised myself that I’d go on with my life just as if nothing had happened. We were already reaching the end of our contract, so it was stupid of me to be making a fuss about this.I arranged the breakfast on the tray, watching the steam rise from the hot cup of coffee before I let out a low breath. “If only thing’s were different…” I found myself muttering. “If and only if…”Leaving the food on the counter, I climbed up the stairs reluctantly—the only thing pushing me to do this being the urg

Calista's POVThe second I heard the voice of that woman in there laughing with Gerald, my husband, my heart sunk to my stomach and anger roiled in my chest.I didn't care if he wanted to sleep around, but he could at least have the decency to do it secretly, not here where all his workers can see and hear all that's going on because soon they'll tell a friend who would tell a friend and before you know what's happening, it's all over the internet. He definitely didn't want that because he's told me a million times and his dad had told me ten million times.“You'll tell my husband that I want to see him right now. Since he has no shame to be doing whatever he's doing in there.” I snapped at the guy that was standing in front of my face, trying to block me from going on. “And I'm going in there, no matter how it takes. I'll either go around you or go through you, and you'll be very surprised at how strong I am, darling.” I palmed his cheek, giving him a smile I hoped was scary enough.

Calista's POVToday was just like every other day for me. I woke up early, cleaned the house, did the dishes, and now, I was making breakfast so that it'd be ready for when Gerald woke up.I knew I couldn't wake him, so I just guessed what he would like to have, and that ended as bacon, toast and eggs and maybe a cup of coffee.I was about to go brew some coffee when a set of footsteps coming down the stairs drew my attention. I knew it was Gerald because obviously we're the only two living in this massive house, but usually he sleeps in so it was pretty surprising seeing him awake by this time.“Gerald? Is everything okay? You're up pretty early.” I forced a chuckle. “That's good.”He just brushed past me like I was invisible, opened the fridge, grabbed a bottle of water and slammed it back shut before turning to go back upstairs, not bothering to say a single word to me.I didn't even know when I muttered to myself. “Well, what did I expect?” But truly, what did I expect? We were in
