Chapter 1

"Mr. Wagner. Congratulations, you're going to be a father! The report shows that your wife is a little over two months pregnant!

"From now on, make sure you take good care of her. Pregnant women tend to be emotionally sensitive, so they'll need extra care and support."

The doctor's voice echoed in my ears. I, Steven Wagner, jerked my head up and stared at the report in the doctor's hand.

Only then did I dare believe it. I had been reborn.

The next second, I heard the thoughts of the baby growing inside my wife Cindy Stuart's womb.

'Dad, Mom's going to divorce you after I'm born!'

Hearing the exact same voice I'd heard in my previous life sent a chill down my spine.

The horrifying memories of dying alone in the hospital came flooding back. It left me trembling in fear.

Before I could gather my thoughts, the baby spoke again.

'Mom's first love can't have children! That's why she married you. You're just a tool!

'Once I'm born, she'll divorce you, take me away, and live happily ever after with him!'

In my previous life, after hearing those words, I hadn't questioned them for a second. I immediately asked my wife for a divorce.

No matter how desperately she explained or begged me to stay, I believed every word the baby said.

It wasn't until I was on my deathbed that I learned it had all been a lie.

Why had the baby lied?

This time, I was determined to find out.

The doctor noticed how pale I'd become and asked with concern, "Mr. Wagner, are you alright? Is the news too overwhelming?"

I looked at Cindy's still-flat stomach and asked thoughtfully, "Doctor, is this baby normal?"

The doctor blinked in confusion.

"Are you asking about the baby's health?"

I recalled that in my previous life, Cindy and I got divorced because of this baby.

If I chose not to have this baby, or if I simply ignored what the baby was saying, would Cindy and I have stayed together?

At the very least, when I was diagnosed with cancer, would the woman I loved have still been by my side?

If we didn't have this child in this life, would our ending be any different?

So I nodded and said, "This pregnancy was unexpected. My wife and I aren't really prepared for it, and we're worried there might be complications.

"If we were to terminate the–"

"Steven, my stomach hurts!"

Before I could finish, Cindy's face suddenly turned pale. She clutched her stomach tightly as sweat formed on her forehead.

The baby's voice immediately rang out again.

'Dad, what were you about to tell the doctor?'

'You're not thinking of getting rid of me, are you? I won't like that!'

'I know you love Mom. Even if she betrayed you, the worst you'd do is divorce her. But you'd never let her die, would you?'

Cindy was in so much pain she couldn't even speak.

Only then did I realize the baby could hear everything happening around us from inside the womb.

The moment I showed even the slightest intention of not wanting the baby, it would drag Cindy down with it.

But the baby was right about one thing.

I loved Cindy. In my previous life, after hearing that she'd betrayed me, I was so devastated that I completely lost my reason. I never gave her a chance to explain before rushing into a divorce.

Yet in the end, I died on an operating table without ever seeing her one last time.

Seeing how much pain Cindy was in, the doctor finally realized the seriousness of the situation.

She hurried over and asked, "Miss, how are you feeling? If your current condition isn't suitable for pregnancy, I recommend putting your own health first. You can always have another child later."

Cindy wiped the sweat from her forehead and clenched her jaw. "I'm fine. I can do this."

"Honey, we don't have to keep this baby. Your health comes first–"

I had barely started speaking when Cindy's face turned even paler.

The words caught in my throat. Instead, I forced myself to say, "Doctor, could you prescribe some glucose and nutritional supplements? We're definitely keeping this baby."

The moment I finished speaking, the baby's voice returned.

'That's more like it, Dad.

'You'd better take good care of Mom. Otherwise, I'll take her life.

'Oh, and if you don't behave, not only will I kill her, but even you–'

The voice trailed off, but I understood that if I didn't obey, I wouldn't survive either.

A thought suddenly occurred to me. Could the cancer I'd mysteriously developed in my previous life also be caused by this child?

But that didn't make sense. I'd already divorced Cindy in my previous life. So why had I still gotten cancer?

Sweat trickled down my back. I didn't dare say another reckless word because I knew the baby was listening every second.

When we got home, Cindy secretly answered a phone call before turning to me with a smile.

"Honey, I have a class reunion tonight. I'll be home a little late."

In my previous life, that phone call had been the final straw. The moment I heard the baby's words, I'd assumed she was meeting her lover.

That very night, I'd filed for divorce.

This time, I wasn't going to make the same mistake.

So I simply nodded.

"Okay. I'll wait up for you. Take good care of yourself and our baby."

The instant I realized the seriousness of the situation, I stepped in front of Cindy."Eric, have you lost your mind?"His bloodshot eyes burned with murderous intent."You knew all along, didn't you? You've just been waiting to laugh at me!"I glanced at the half-open front door. I was desperately calculating how to get Cindy and the baby outside first.Eric seemed to read my thoughts. He burst into hysterical laughter."Don't bother looking. No one in this neighborhood is going to hear your cries for help!"They all took my money. They've shut their doors. They're all deaf tonight!"You're an orphan with no parents. Let's see who's going to save you now!"My body had only recently recovered. I still hadn't regained my full strength.I looked worriedly at Cindy. Her eyes welled up with tears as she stared at Eric. "Eric, can you please stop?""Stop?" Eric laughed bitterly and looked at her. "How can I stop? Cindy, tell me. Steven tricked you, didn't he? The one you love is

At my next scheduled checkup, I ran into Eric.He looked completely rejuvenated. The haggard, sickly appearance he'd worn just months ago was gone. Instead, I was the one who looked like a shadow of my former self."Steven, it's only been a few months. What happened to you?"You look like you're dying."I stared at him expressionlessly."Thanks for the kind wishes. I plan to live a long, healthy life."But I can't say the same for you," I said coldly. My words instantly enraged him. Right there in the hospital corridor, he pointed at me and started shouting."Steven, let's see how long you can keep acting smug!"Do you think you've got much longer to live? You–"Halfway through, he realized he'd said too much. He abruptly fell silent. After a long pause, he continued."Well then, I hope you stay healthy and live to a hundred."After a few more sarcastic remarks, he turned around and walked away.Watching his confident, swaggering back, I couldn't help but smile.I wonder

I froze on the spot. For a second, I wondered if I'd misheard. In this lifetime, Cindy was the one asking for a divorce. What was going on?Before I could speak, the baby burst into laughter.'Dad, I told you this would happen!'I kept telling you to divorce her, but you wouldn't listen. Now look who's embarrassed!'Suppressing the turmoil inside me, I asked, "Did Eric force you to say this? What really happened?"Cindy, if you tell me the truth, I can forgive you."Instead, Cindy gently stroked Eric's hair with obvious affection."Eric and I truly love each other."I'll give you whatever compensation you're entitled to, but I hope you'll let us be together."Eric leaned smugly against her shoulder. Oddly enough, I wasn't angry. I was simply curious.Would she still be smiling when the truth finally came out? That very night, I moved out and returned to my old house on the west side of the city.My parents had died in a car accident when I was young. Before meeting Cindy,

Outside the consultation room, I heard Eric laughing."Doctor, does this mean my condition is getting better?"Cindy chuckled too."Yeah. Eric has looked so much healthier lately."The doctor sounded pleased but also puzzled."Mr. Lloyd's recovery has been remarkable. In all my years of practice, I've never seen someone with late-stage pancreatic cancer recover like this. Normally, there's virtually no chance of a cure, yet his condition is improving at an astonishing rate!""Eric is blessed. Pancreatic cancer won't take him down!"The room erupted in cheerful laughter. It turned out Cindy and Eric had been together all along. I was the fool who'd been kept in the dark.I clenched my fists so tightly that my entire body trembled with rage. The baby's voice echoed again.'Dad, I told you Mom was cheating on you.'Now that you know, what are you waiting for? Hurry up and divorce her!'Is a woman like that really worth holding on to?'I sneered on the inside.'Divorce? If I

My mind went completely blank. The flood of information left me unable to think. The baby really was mine.I'd always assumed the baby was lying. I never believed its claim that Cindy's first love was infertile. I'd even suspected the child she was carrying wasn't mine.I had thought the baby was desperately trying to break up our marriage so Cindy's lover could take my place. But now, the DNA test proved otherwise. The child was truly mine.Could it be that everything the baby had said was true?Had Cindy really married me only because her first love couldn't have children?Had she really cheated on me?'Dad, please believe me. Mom really is cheating on you!'If you don't believe me, just hire someone to follow her!'The next second, a notification appeared on the phone Cindy had left on the table.[Honey, what time are you coming to keep me company this afternoon?]The sender's name was unmistakably Cindy's first love in college, Eric Lloyd.Only then did I finally beli

'Dad, if I find out you're doing something behind my back that's bad for me, I'll be very upset.'The baby's voice grew increasingly violent. There was nothing childlike about it anymore. At that moment, I made up my mind. I had to find out what was really growing inside my wife's womb.Suppressing the unease in my heart, I pulled out my phone and called my supervisor."Mr. Jericho, I'd like to take the day off."I then texted Cindy.[Honey, come to the hospital. There's something I need to tell you in person.]After that, I hailed a cab straight to the hospital. The entire ride, the baby kept interrogating me.'Dad, where are you going?'Not talking, huh? If you won't answer me, I'll make Mom suffer!'Right after the baby finished talking, Cindy called. Her voice was weak."Honey, my stomach hurts–"The instant I heard her, I rushed over to pick her up.I had to find out what this thing inside her really was. What kind of child would try to make its parents divorce befo
