Chapter 2

By the time I pushed through the pharmacy's double doors, I had wrestled my breathing back under control, but a fine tremor still ran through my hands, a persistent reminder of what had happened.

The familiar scent of antiseptic and powdered latex filled my lungs, a grounding aroma after the cloying cologne of Carter's office. Maya looked up from behind the counter, a stack of prescription forms in one hand and a ceramic mug of coffee in the other, but the moment our eyes met, her professional smile faltered. She saw right through the mask I was trying to wear.

"Ivy, what happened?" she asked quietly, her voice barely a murmur above the hum of the fluorescent lights. She set the forms down with a soft thud, her full attention on me. "Nothing," I said, forcing my feet to carry me toward my workstation, each step feeling stiff and unnatural.

"I just need a minute." Maya didn't believe me. She rarely did when I gave her an answer like that, but she also knew me well enough not to push when I wasn't ready to talk. She slid the coffee toward me instead, the steam curling up in a delicate plume. "Drink this before it gets cold."

I gave her a grateful look and wrapped both hands around the warm ceramic, letting the heat seep into my cold fingers. "Thanks."

She watched me for another second, her gaze weighing and knowing, before she returned to the prescriptions. "Carter called for you twice." My stomach tightened into a painful knot.

"What did he want again?"I asked and the bile which had already settled began to rise again.

"Probably to make your morning worse," she muttered, then glanced toward the consultation room before lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "I told him you were with a patient."

I looked at her, surprised. "You lied for me?"

A wry smile touched her lips. "I prefer the term 'protected your peace.'" She shrugged, but the concern in her eyes remained, a steady anchor in the storm of my morning. "You're welcome."

A small, genuine smile escaped me despite the turmoil churning inside. "You're impossible."

"And you're terrible at pretending you're fine," she shot back softly. Before I could answer, the pharmacy phone rang, its sharp trill slicing through our quiet exchange. Maya picked it up, and I turned toward the prescription queue, grateful for the distraction.

There were still patients waiting, medications to verify, calls to return, and enough paperwork to keep me occupied for the rest of the afternoon.

For the next hour, I managed to lose myself in the rhythmic, almost meditative flow of the work. A patient needed clarification about the dosage on her prescription, another wanted to know whether a medication could be taken with food, and one elderly man spent nearly ten minutes searching through his wallet before finally finding the exact amount he needed.

None of it was unusual, and that was precisely what I needed.

Normal questions, normal problems, things I knew how to solve and by late afternoon, the tightness in my chest had eased enough for me to breathe without thinking about it, the phantom weight of Carter's hand receding to a dull throb in the back of my mind.

I was checking a prescription against the doctor's notes when one of the pharmacy assistants, a young woman named Chloe, approached my station with a small paper bag. "Ivy, can you verify this before I send it upstairs?" "Sure." I took the bag and glanced at the label.

My eyes stopped on the name, Sebastian Kane.

I had seen his name often enough around the company that it didn't surprise me, even people who had never met him knew who he was.

Sebastian Kane was the heir to Kane Pharma, the only son of the Kane family, and the man whose life had changed after an attack that had left him unconscious. People talked about him constantly and some said he had been unlucky. Others whispered that the attack had something to do with the company and there were even rumors that his family knew more about what had happened than they were telling anyone.

I had never cared enough to ask which version was true. I looked down at the medication again and something wasn't right. I checked the prescription against the label, then checked it a second time. "This isn't his." Chloe's eyebrows lifted. "What?"

"The name is wrong." I turned the bag toward her. "The prescription is for someone else."

Her face paled slightly. "Are you sure?" "I'm sure." She took the bag from me and checked it herself before letting out a relieved breath. "Oh. You're right."

"That's why we verify everything before it leaves the pharmacy."

"I know." She gave me an embarrassed smile.

"I'll fix it." I nodded and returned to the prescription in front of me.

Chapter 8Eleanor showed me where Sebastian’s medications were kept and walked me through the schedule his nurses followed. She explained which appointments were coming up, where the daily records were stored and whom I should contact if I noticed anything unusual. I listened carefully, asking questions whenever something wasn’t clear. It was familiar work in some ways, though I had never been responsible for keeping track of a routine like this inside someone’s home.“I’ll leave a copy of the schedule in the room,” she said, closing the folder she had brought with her. “The nurses will be here during the day, but there may be times when you’re the only person around him for a while.”“I understand,” I replied softly, my voice firm despite the nervous flutter in my chest.“And please, Ivy,” Eleanor paused, her composed facade cracking just enough to reveal the desperate mother underneath. Her eyes searched mine, her tone pleading. “If anything concerns you, call me, even if you think

I agreed to the trial period before my mind could talk me out of it.The thought of Noah's medical bills, the endless stack of invoices sitting on the kitchen counter, made the choice easier. Two days later, after finishing my shift at the pharmacy, I found myself sitting in the passenger seat of Eleanor Kane’s sedan. The drive to the Kane estate took us out of the busy commercial district and into an enclave of quiet, guarded estates hidden behind high stone walls and wrought-iron gates. When the car finally turned through the sweeping entrance of the Kane property, I couldn't stop my hands from tightening around the strap of my bag.The house was massive. It was all limestone, slate, and glass, surrounded by manicured lawns that looked like they had been measured with a ruler. Tall arched windows reflected the fading afternoon light, giving the entire place a distant, almost imposing grandeur. It was a world completely separate from mine. At home, our space was filled with the clut

Mrs. Kane waited until the last of the evening's customers had left before gesturing for me to follow her somewhere quieter. I wiped my hands with a tissue and caught Maya's eye. She was already looking at me with obvious curiosity, and I knew she'd want the full story later. Mrs. Kane led me into the small, sterile consultation room adjacent to the pharmacy, a space usually reserved for patient counseling. We sat across from each other, the flimsy chairs feeling too formal for the gravity that suddenly settled in the air between us. For a long moment, she seemed unsure of where to begin, her gaze drifting to the institutional posters on the wall before returning to me. "I wanted to talk to you about Sebastian."I wasn't expecting that. "Is something wrong with his prescription?" "No." She shook her head, a decisive movement. "His medications are fine." I waited, the silence stretching, filled only by the distant hum of the pharmacy lights. "I've been thinking about what happened y

The morning rush had already begun by the time I pushed through the pharmacy doors. A queue of patients had formed at the counter, the phone was ringing every few minutes, and Maya was trying to organize a stack of prescriptions while answering a question from one of the assistants. She caught my eye as I shrugged off my coat, a flicker of relief in her own. "You're early.""Only by a few minutes.""Still counts," she said, sliding a printed slip across the counter toward me. I tucked my bag into its usual hiding spot beneath the register. "What did I miss?""Nothing exciting," she replied, though her tone suggested otherwise."Mrs. Parker called twice about her refill, the delivery came in twenty minutes ago, and Chloe nearly sent the wrong medication upstairs again."I looked up from the slip, my brow furrowing. "Again?"Maya let out a long-suffering sigh. "She's learning." I couldn't help the soft laugh that escaped. The morning settled into its familiar, demanding rhythm after

By the time I got home that evening, the sky had turned a deep purple, and the streetlights had come on along the street. The first thing I heard when I pushed open the heavy front door was the bright, pealing sound of Ella's laughter drifting from the kitchen."You're late," she called out, her voice full of the warmth of home.I closed the door behind me, the click of the latch a final punctuation on the day. I closed the door behind me and slipped off my shoes, my feet aching after a long day. "I know, work was hectic." Ella came out of the kitchen, still holding a wooden spoon flecked with sauce. She took one look at me, her smile faltering as her gaze swept over my face, taking in the exhaustion I couldn't quite hide. "You look exhausted.""I am exhausted." She studied my face for a moment longer, her brow furrowing with concern. It reminded me of the same look I'd seen in Maya's eyes earlier, and before Ella could ask anything else, Mum called from the kitchen. "Ella, leav

The corrected prescription for Sebastian Kane was still warm from the printer when I heard the soft, unmistakable click of heels approaching the pharmacy counter again. I looked up from my verification screen, and there she was, Mrs. Kane, returning far sooner than I’d expected. I immediately reached for the small paper bag Chloe had just brought over, the corrected label crisp under my fingertips. "Here's your medication," I said, my voice careful, professional. I handed it to her, the paper crinkling softly in the quiet space between us."Thank you," she said, her tone as measured as before. She accepted the bag, her manicured fingers steady, but instead of turning to leave, she remained, her gaze holding mine. There was something thoughtful in her expression, a calm assessment that seemed to see past the practiced neutrality I wore like armor. In that instant, I became acutely aware of the faint tension still coiled in my shoulders, a stubborn remnant of the morning's violation.
