Liam's POV

The bar felt emptier after she left. Funny thing was, it wasn’t even full to begin with. Just a few people, some soft music, a few clinks of glass and murmurs here and there.

But when Maria stood and walked out, something in the place just... shifted.

I sat still for a few seconds, holding my glass but not drinking. I watched the door, even though I knew she wasn’t coming back.

Then I let out a slow breath and leaned back in my seat.

She was in too deep. That much was clear.

If Luca De Rossi was planning to start a business for her, it meant he didn’t just want her in his house or in his bed. He wanted her fully in his life. And maybe, just maybe, he wanted to keep her busy. Distracted. Controlled.

I didn’t want to think that. I didn’t want to think he could see her as just another pawn to move around. But this was Luca De Rossi. You couldn’t take anything at face value.

Or maybe he genuinely cared for her.

That possibility twisted something in me. Something uncomfortable.

I took another sip of my drink and let the bitterness coat my tongue.

The thing is, I really wanted to take Luca De Rossi down. I’ve wanted to for a long time. But I’ve never had anything solid.

Never caught him with blood on his hands. Never caught him holding the knife. And now… the guy who attacked Maria’s apartment? The body? Gone.

Just like that.

Wiped clean like it never existed.

There’s no one to question. No files to track. No witness.

Nothing.

I rubbed a hand down my face, trying to stop myself from punching the table in front of me.

I didn’t want to push Maria. I knew I couldn’t. Not yet. She trusted me, at least a little and if I overstep, she’d run off. And I’d lose whatever chance I was holding onto.

Still, I needed to stay close. Close enough to see things. Close enough to protect her, if it came to that.

Then a thought came.

What if I asked her to let me be part of her business?

It would bring me closer. It would give me access. But... no. That was a terrible idea. Too obvious. Too risky.

I could still help though. Be useful. Advise her. Make myself someone she couldn’t do without in that space. That way, she’d keep me close. She’d keep talking. She might even tell me things she wasn’t supposed to.

“Thinking about her even when she’s gone?”

The voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned and saw the barman, he was wiping down the counter while smiling calmly at me.

I gave a short laugh, “Yeah,” I admitted.

He nodded like he understood but didn’t say more.

After a few seconds, I leaned in a little. “Hey… has she been coming here a lot?”

He stopped wiping for a second, thinking. “Not really. Only started coming the day you two met here. Looked like she had a rough day that time.”

“Yeah,” I said. “Any idea what happened that day?”

He shook his head. “Nah. Didn’t say much. Just sat quiet. Ordered something strong. Didn’t even touch her drink until way later.”

I nodded slowly, turning my glass in my hand.

“She seems like trouble,” he added suddenly, voice lower now.

I turned to him, raising a brow. “What do you mean by that?”

He hesitated. Like he wasn’t sure if he should say more. Maybe he thought I’d get offended. But then he shrugged and went on.

“Just a gut feeling. I see people. I watch them. Something about her… I don’t know. She’s carrying something heavy. Like there’s a storm always around her. Trouble finds people like that, or maybe they find it.”

I stayed quiet for a moment.

“Are you saying I should stay away from her?” I asked, but not with anger. Just curiosity.

He shook his head again. “Nah. Not saying that. Just saying what I see.”

I smiled, more to myself than to him. Finished the last sip of my drink.

“Well… thanks,” I said, pulling some cash from my wallet and placing it on the counter. “For the drink. And the warning.”

He gave me a small nod. “Take care of yourself.”

I stood up, slipping my hands into my pockets and walking toward the door. The bar was even quieter now.

As I stepped out into the night, the cool air touched my skin like a reminder that this world never rested.

And just before I walked to my car, I whispered to myself, “Of course she’s trouble.”

I paused.

“She’s Luca De Rossi’s woman. And Luca De Rossi is no ordinary man.”

Luca's POVI laid on the bed, face down, not moving. The room was quiet except for the sound of the room's quietness. My eyes were closed, but I wasn’t asleep. I couldn’t sleep. Not with everything going through my head.Stephanie. Gunshots. Alexa…The things echoed in my mind like I wanted to live there. She was just a girl. A girl I had allowed myself to use and pleasure with like a toy. But why did she have to come now and with a gun?If it has been someone else and even if it was I who hurt them, I wouldn't let them get away but with her, I feel like she's got a reason to punish me.I needed to find her, that's why I needed every help I could get. Hotel security or mine.I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding, trying to relax, but it wasn’t still working. I just felt… off. Then I heard Maria’s soft steps. She walked quietly, like she didn’t want to disturb me. She didn’t ask anything more. She didn’t say a word. She just got into the bed and gently laid on top of me. Her

Maria's POV“I know the shooter,” Luca said. “And I think I know why she might have wanted to kill me.”Those words stayed in my head as the water kept running down both our bodies. I was still holding him from behind, but I could feel how heavy those words were on him.I didn’t ask him anything else. I just let the silence fill the space between us.Then he reached for the shower knob and turned off the shower.Without a word, he stepped out and grabbed his robe. He didn’t even look at me. He just wrapped the robe around his body and walked out of the bathroom. I picked up a towel and followed.By the time I got to the room, he was already sitting on the couch. His robe was loose, almost falling off his shoulder. He looked... exhausted. Not just from the attack, but from what was bothering him deep inside.Whatever it was was surely eating Luca up.I walked over and sat on his lap.I rested my head on his chest and didn’t say anything. I just wanted him to know I was here. He didn’t

Luca's POV “Stephanie,” I said.Alex blinked. “I don’t think I recognise that name, boss.”“You wouldn’t,” I replied, voice low. “She was one of the girls Alexa used to bring in. For her pleasure. Our pleasure, as Alexa used to say.”I shook my head a little.“But it was always her thing more than mine. I was fine with just Alexa, you know. But she had a taste for trying things... different things. Stephanie was one of them.”Alex nodded slowly. “Still, why would she want to kill you?”“I don’t know,” I said truthfully.I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Maria.I looked at the screen, then at Alex. “Did you tell her?”“Who, Maria? No.” Alex replied quickly.I answered.“Luca?” Maria’s voice was anxious. “What’s going on? The security here just told me you were attacked. Are you okay?”“I’m fine,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “Don’t you worry.”Alex’s phone vibrated now and he stepped to the side to answer. A moment later, he turned to me. “Our team is here.”I nodded, then

I ended the call and leaned back in my seat, the phone still in my hand.Alex and the driver were in front, quiet as usual. But I couldn’t hide the small smile that tugged at my lips.“Maria’s got something.” I said quietly.Alex turned a little in his seat. “Sir?”“Maria. She’s finally decided. She wants to start a bar.”Alex nodded. “That’s good news.”But he looked again through the mirror. Then asked, “Why are you smiling about it, if you don’t mind me asking?”I stared out the window.“She wants to be involved, Alex. She’s not like Alexa.”Alex stayed quiet, but I knew he was listening.“She’s not asking for money or gifts. She wants to help. Be part of something,” I added. “Alexa never wanted that. All she wanted was pleasure. To try things in bed, to play with new partners, and enjoy the money.”Alex gave a short nod like he understood, and I knew he did.I looked back out the window. Everything outside looked normal. Cars driving by, people walking, streetlights coming on.And

Maria's POV I didn’t go straight home.Something pulled me into a small local coffee shop by the corner. It wasn’t fancy or shiny, just warm and quiet. The kind of place you would miss if you didn't look well.As soon as I stepped in, the smell hit me. Coffee, donuts and something sweet I couldn’t place. I stopped for a second, just breathing it in.God, I missed this.It reminded me of Red Coffee. Back when Sophia and I worked late shifts and used to hide leftover bagels in our bags. We’d take them home, make cheap coffee, sit on the floor, and laugh about our day. Most times, we joked about the customers. Those customers with strange accents, people who talked too much, or ordered like they were royalty. We used to laugh till our cheeks hurt.I smiled a little just thinking about it.“Hi,” the girl behind the counter said. “What can I get you?”“Just a donut. And coffee, black.”She nodded and got to work. I moved to the side and leaned against the counter. My eyes moved across the

Liam's POVMarcus was quiet. Sitting still. But I could tell he was watching me.“You don’t believe it, do you?” he finally said.I rubbed my palms together. “I don’t know, man… Luca De Rossi could traffic drugs or guns, but humans?” I looked up at him. “I don’t think so.”Marcus shook his head slowly, almost like he didn’t recognize me. “Liam. You’re investigating an international criminal. All possibilities must be considered.”“I get that,” I said, not even trying to argue. “But I’ve been on this case for years. I’ve seen things. Heard worse. But never human trafficking. Not once. That’s not his pattern.”“You said it yourself,” Marcus said. “He hides it well. That doesn’t mean he’s clean.”I leaned back in the chair. “Look… the weird sexual stuff, yeah. I’ve heard that. But that was mostly Alexa. She had… tastes. There are rumors. But Luca De Rossi?” I shook my head again. “He’s more into brutal silence. Kill whoever he suspects, wipe it clean. That’s his signature. Not smuggling
