Sweet But Deadly

The next day, Angelic and William went back to the  hospital where Anika Foster died. The first thing they did was to review the CCTV footage, but no odd image from the monitor was recorded. William suggested to see the room where the child has been admitted for more than three days.

The room remained untidy, there were still blood and fluid on the floor, William took his micro cylinder to get some specimens, including the blood, fluid and some strands of hair scattered on the floor. The room was stinky but they continue finding things that could help them for the investigation.

Angelic looked down the bed where Anika slept for three nights. There was a weird ambience she felt, she took up the pillow and saw a candy under it.

“William, look at this.”

William came over the bed and observed the candy. It was not a typical candy, there were holes inside, perhaps the rat beside ate it. They thought that it was just a newly manufactured candy, but they wondered why the rat died and its body was almost torn into pieces.

Angelic took the candy and found that it was like a capsule, she tried to split it into two halves and a dust like particles came out from the candy. William took the particles inside his micro cylinder and tried to search for more candies. They found two in the blanket.

Angelic strongly believed that the child ate the candy before she died, and if it contained poison inside. That would be possibly the main cause of her death. And she can have an evidence to prove that her dad was innocent.

The next day, Angelic prepared herself for the first trial procedure.

In the trial court's parking area, Angelic was bombarded with consecutive questions coming from the press.

“Attorney Morgan, is the accusation true that your father, Doctor Ivan Smith tortured and killed an eight year old girl, Anika Foster?”

Private detective Henry covered Angelic from the group of journalists surrounding them. He opened his yellow umbrella to block the team and they walked as fast as they could. But the press continue throwing series of interrogations.

“My dad was not a criminal.”

Angelic and William get inside the court room and there were many people present to attend the trial.

Judge Max Cullen presided the trial.

“Republic Of Mansfield Vs. Sigmund Morgan accused of murdering an eight year old girl, Anika Foster and subjected for death penalty if proven guilty. What is your plea?”

“Not guilty your honour.”

The crowd inside the court started to make some noise inside the hall. Mr. Adamson Foster begun to act violently and he shouted for justice for his daughter. His wife Alicia Foster cried on her seat trying to calm down her husband.

“I was there! You killed my daughter! You tortured her!”

Now, it’s time for Angekic to defend her father. She stated that the drug used by her father for Anika’s operation was not really the reason behind her death since the doses were regulated and measured properly. She added that the drugs had different side effects and none from the child’s body appeared as indication that the drug was overdosed.

The statement given by Atty. Angelic was contradicted by the witness of the complainant. Mr. Felix Cooper p, a licensed pathologist who conducted the autopsy stressed that the combination of the two different drugs injected simultaneously to Anika’s body had combined and exploded inside her stomach which caused the deterioration of all the internal organs including her intestines, gall bladder, kidneys and eventually attacked her left ventricle which led to a sudden heart malfunctioning.

Atty. Leonard Cowell, a hired lawyer of the complainant asked Laura about her knowledge on pharmacy and what chemical or drug had really caused the death of his client. Angelic talked about the candy they found in the bed where Anika laid before she died. However, the candy was still being studied.

The crowd started to laugh over Angelic's statement, she sounded nonsensical this time. They thought that it was a ridiculous thing to blame a crime on a small candy. Mr. Cowell laughed insultingly and dared Laura to bring one sample of candy and he would take it in front and see if he will die. The audience burst out laughing again, the judge announced for the dismissal of the trial procedure to be continued next week.

The police guarded Dr. Morgan to his cell, Angelic promised her dad that she would do everything to prove his innocence.

The next day, William and Angelicp went back to Miss Eleonor Catwood's lab to see the result of her study about the candy. Miss Catwood was a pharmaceutical scientist who had been used to examining different types of medicines. She looked old at her age of 45 yet her brain was so clever that she was able to describe the candy by just looking at it. She said that it was not really a candy, it was formulated to kill human system particularly the internal organs including the major parts such as respiratory and nervous system. The candy was just a trick to cover the deadly particles.

Miss Catwood added that the formulated candy contained three major deadly drugs; one was Tylenol which can caused liver damage and toxicity, second, Benzos that caused deadly respiratory depression and last, the deadly Warfarin that caused fatal internal and external bleeding. She took one candy and opened it using her cutter and asked Arnold to look for some animals outside, she advised him to search for a mammal for it has nearer structure with humans than reptiles and birds.

William saw a little pig from the neighbour and asked the owner if he could buy it for 200 U.S dollars. The old man agreed and gave the swine to Arnold.

He gave it to Miss Catwood and she started the experiment. She converted the capsule into liquid and injected it to the poor pig. After an hour of observation, no bad effect happened so they left the laboratory.

William remembered a case he investigated ten years ago where the incident happened at the same hospital. He asked Angelic to go with him at his office to search some files that would be used as connections for their investigation.
