Chapter 31

ALEXI

We drove for hours. No one would tell me where we were going. Nash just went on about how our rule will be great.

I wasn't listening as I watch the scenery past the window. My eyes go wide. I recognize this road.

I haven't been here in over a year.

I sit up in my seat looking out the car window. "I'm home." My eyes wander all over.

"Yes, you are princess. Welcome home." I turn to Nash beside me. He's grinning.

I don't know what to think. I missed home, but now that I know the secrets it possessed, it's bittersweet.

We slowly enter the outskirts of the grand city my father ruled over.

Homes black. Boarded. Falling apart. Children once played in these streets. Now they're reduced to rubble. Results of a war between the Dragons and the Alliance.

I put my hand on the window. My people did not deserve the punishment they received for my father's greed.

"Hundreds died. Many more escaped with barely their lives." Nash says solemnly. "But with us as rulers we will rebuild everything."
