Smoke under Silence

“Boss, are you okay?”

David's voice sounded distant, more like it was coming from under water.

Christian didn’t answer immediately. His fingers tightened around the glass, his jaw clenched as he stared into thin air unfocused.

He wasn’t ok, he couldn’t take it anymore, his problem wasn’t the alcohol or even the noise he just hated the fact that a woman was living in his home.

“What’s going on boss?” David asked again, this time lowering his head to know exactly what the problem is.

“I’m fine ... .just let me be” his vision was blurry but he was still trying to sit strong.

“You genuinely do not look fine boss, I think you drank too much,” David worried.

“I said I am fine!” That was the turning point. David leaned back studying him quietly, he knew when to stop pushing especially when it came to his complicated boss.

Christain poured another glass for himself as he gulped it down his throat.

“Oh my God, sir you need to calm down” David warned. He knew his boss so well, he had zero alcohol tolerance, he'd get drunk from just a cup and right now it felt as if he wanted to kill himself.

Just when he felt like the whole situation wouldn’t get any worse Christian’s phone started to ring.

David stared at the screen and he was shocked.

“Sir….. your mom is calling?” He whispered

Of course he knew he was in big trouble, she’d blame him for allowing Christian drink this much.

“Oh fuck! You guys should leave me alone” Christian aggressively replied.

He was no longer himself, the effect of the alcohol has taken over completely and David was completely confused.

He picked the phone and slowly responded to the woman over the other line.

“Hello son? Where have you been all morning? The investors are already calling” she sounded worried.

“Uhm… good morning ma’am we might have a bit of an issue” David responded, his voice shaking, he knew the amount of nagging he’d be getting in a few minutes time once he spilled the beans.

“David, is that you? Put Christian on the line” she demanded.

“Actually ma’am the boss is drunk and he’s in a really terrible condition and I can’t help me alone I need help”

“What!!!!! You say WHAT!!!” Her voice echoed through the phone. David almost threw the phone away in fear.

“David, I think you’re mad! You have one fucking job and that’s to make sure my son is ok and what did you do, you went ahead to let him drunk to stupor and you know Chrstian doesn’t have any tolerance for alcohol” her voice sounded like a great thunder storm.

“I’m sorry ma’am but I was on my leave, I just walked into the restaurant when I saw….”

“Oh please shut up! Daniella!!!!” She screamed over the phone.

“Yes ma’am” David could hear the beautiful voice of a lady. He was confused

“Uhm sorry ma are you at the boss house?” He asked, trying to be sure he didn’t miss heard, he had worked for Chrstian for more than 14 years and he knew Benson would never bring in a woman into the house, not for any reason. The only woman he had seen was Angella and she was always sticking around Christian’s mom, she dare not speak directly to him.

“Of course!” The woman rudely answered and then turned back to Daniella.

“I am going to send you a phone number just call him and find the location of Christian make sure you get my son back home” she screamed and walked away.

Daniella stood there with her heart beating, of course he was a child he knew he couldn’t tolerate alcohol but yet he just wants to make her life a living hell.

She groaned inside of her as she walked out of the living room heading up stairs to pick her phone.

“What kind of a man doesn’t tolerate alcohol” she muttered under her breath as she picked her phone from the bed and headed straight outside the building going to look for Christian at the said location.

When Daniella got to the restaurant David was shocked, he stared at her from top to bottom, this has to be one of the most beautiful ladies he has ever come across, of course she didn’t do too much.

Daniella was dressed in her usual boyfriend crazy jeans, a baggy top that swallowed her curvy shape, her hair packed into a bum one would see her and call her homeless. But regardless she just couldn’t hide her resistible beauty.

“Uhm … hello you’re ?” David found himself stammering as his eyes stayed fixed on the young lady whose eyes didn’t leave Christian’s face as she watched him misbehave in his drunk state.

“Daniella nice to meet you, I’m Christian’s new house help” she was straight plain and not one bit flirty.

This was unusual, to David every lady that had come across Christian wanted to have a one night stand with him, but this she was different, at this point she genuinely found Christian irritating and this made him laugh.

“I’m sorry I am David his personal assistant, his always like this when ever he drinks”

“So how possible is it that a grown ass man doesn’t have any tolerance for alcohol?” Daniella asked as she walked over to Christian pulling him up.

“Let go of me” he growled and she glared at him with anger “please where is the car?” She asked as David stood there staring in amazement.

“Wow, you’re something else” he whispered as he led the way heading to the car.

On getting to the car Daniella pulled Christian inside and closed the door behind her just when the car was about to start he puked all over her.

“Oh my God!” This was the height of it, she was definitely going to lose her mind because of this annoying freak.

“What did you …” she screamed but Christian was already closing his eyes slowly, almost falling asleep. It felt like she was talking to a ghost because he was already lost as a result of the drink.

“I’m so sorry” David apologized as he sat in the staring wheel.

“It’s fine let’s just go home” Daniella responded trying to calm her nerves down before she loses her temper and kills him right there and then.

Daniella pulled off her top leaving just the bra singlet she had on Christian tore his eyes open as they dropped on her cleavage he couldn’t stare away.

It looked soft plumpy like something he wanted to get his hands on.

“Damn” he groaned his eyes not moving away

“What is wrong with you?” Daniella screamed.

  • In Love with my Father’s Serial Killer    Room 314

The old Crown Meridian building looked nothing like Daniella had imagined. It stood at the end of a narrow street surrounded by newer buildings, its stone exterior darkened by years of rain and neglect. Most of the windows were covered with metal shutters, and a faded sign above the entrance was barely readable.CROWN MERIDIAN HOLDINGS.Daniella stared at it from inside the car.“This place has been abandoned for years,” Christian said.“Not completely.”She pointed toward the side of the building.A security light had just switched on.Christian followed her gaze.Someone was there. He immediately reached for his phone.“Stay in the car.”Daniella turned toward him. “Absolutely not.”“Daniella.”“My uncle is inside.”“And we don’t know who else is inside.”“Exactly. That’s why I’m coming.”Christian stared at her for several seconds before giving up.“Fine. But you stay beside me.”They got out of the car.The street was almost completely empty. Daniella could hear the sound of her o

  • In Love with my Father’s Serial Killer    The Price of knowing

Daniella stared at the photograph on her phone until her eyes began to ache. Her uncle was sitting in a dark room with his hands tied behind a wooden chair. There was blood on the corner of his mouth, but he was conscious. His head was slightly lowered, his expression difficult to read. Whoever had taken the photograph had made sure his face was visible.Christian stood beside her, his expression hardening as he studied the image.“Send it to me.”Daniella immediately forwarded the photograph.“Can you trace where it came from?”“Not from the photograph itself.” Christian pulled out his phone. “But whoever sent this may have made a mistake.”Daniella looked at him. “What mistake?”“The image was sent directly to your phone. That means there’s a communication trail. Give me a minute.”He stepped away and began working.Daniella looked around her uncle’s study again. A few minutes ago, this room had been filled with questions. Now it felt like the answers were closing in around her.Her

  • In Love with my Father’s Serial Killer    The Empty study

Daniella knew something was wrong before they reached the mansion. She sat beside Christian in silence, staring through the passenger window as the city passed in a blur of headlights and rain. The message from the archive remained open on her phone: Start with the first lie your uncle ever told you.She had spent thirteen years believing she knew the truth about her father’s death. Now she wasn’t even sure whether the foundation of that truth had been real. Her uncle had blamed the Harpers. He had told her that Samuel Harper had ordered her father’s death. He had told her Christian knew more than he admitted. But the documents they had just discovered suggested something else entirely. Her father had been investigating Crown Meridian. Someone had forged his signature. Her uncle had known he was in danger. And now someone wanted Daniella to question everything.Christian’s hand closed over hers. “Don’t do this to yourself.”She looked at him. “How am I supposed to stop?”“You can’t so

  • In Love with my Father’s Serial Killer    The first lie

The message remained on Daniella’s screen long after the typing bubble disappeared.Find out who your father was trying to expose before he died. She read it again. Then again. For thirteen years, she had built her entire understanding of her father’s death around one belief: Christian Harper’s family had destroyed him. Her uncle had given her a name, a motive, and enough pieces of a story to make a grieving daughter believe she understood exactly what had happened. But now the pieces were moving. Her father had been investigating someone.Samuel Harper had been involved in the same meeting. Her uncle had been there too.And three days later, her father was dead.Daniella looked at Christian.“Your father knew mine was investigating something.”Christian remained silent for several seconds. “Apparently.”“Why would he?”“I don’t know.”“Then we find out.”Christian looked toward the archive shelves. “There might be something else here.”They searched for almost an hour.Every folder c

  • In Love with my Father’s Serial Killer    The missing page

Daniella couldn’t stop staring at the empty space inside the folder. The page was gone.A few seconds ago, it had contained three names that had changed everything she thought she understood about her father’s past. Now there was nothing except the faint indentation left behind by the paper that had been removed. Her father.Christian’s father. Her uncle.Three men connected to the same mysterious symbol. And someone had been inside the archive with them.Christian was still staring toward the locked doorway when Daniella finally spoke.“How did he get in?”Christian didn’t answer immediately. He moved toward the door and checked the electronic lock. The indicator remained green.“It’s still locked.”Daniella’s stomach tightened. “Then nobody left.”“That’s what I’m thinking.”She looked around the archive. Rows of shelves stood silently around them, packed with documents that had been untouched for years.“Christian.”He turned.“The voice.”“What about it?”“That was my uncle.”“I k

  • In Love with my Father’s Serial Killer    The symbol

Christian watched Daniella carefully as she stepped out of the bathroom. Something about her expression had changed. The uncertainty that had been there moments ago had hardened into something more focused, almost determined, and he knew her well enough now to recognize when she had discovered something she wasn’t ready to share.“What happened?” he asked again.Daniella slipped her phone into her pocket. “I told you. I found something.”“Something that made you look like you’ve just seen a ghost?”She almost smiled, but the expression disappeared before it could fully form. “You’re exaggerating.”“Am I?”Christian stepped closer. Daniella could feel his attention following every movement she made, and for one dangerous second she considered telling him everything—the photograph, the anonymous messages, the symbol, her uncle, Crown Meridian, Victor Hale. But she still didn’t know who was sending the messages or what they wanted from her. She couldn’t drag Christian into something when

“My secretary,” Christian said simply. “Starting now.” The words did not settle immediately. They hung in the air between them, heavy, unexpected, almost unreal. Daniella stared at him, her brows slowly knitting together as if her mind refused to process what she had just heard.

  • In Love with my Father’s Serial Killer    A game of Distraction

The door didn’t just open; it slammed against the wall with enough force to snap Daniella out of whatever storm she had just walked into. She flinched. Her body jerked slightly as her grip tightened around the file in her hand. “Jesus Christ!” she breathed out, her chest rising sharply. “
