Chapter 2

Author: Andrea North
Seraphine accepted the check without hesitation.

Her decisiveness took Clifford aback, making an unfathomable sense of anger surge within him. However, he tried his best to keep it at bay as he looked at the poised and graceful Clarissa beside him.

Anyway, he knew how dependent Seraphine was on him. So what if she took the check? She would come crawling in less than three hours, begging him to take her back. She'd always been the first to give in whenever they fought—he was sure she would even give him back the 200 million dollars to please him.

Anyone would leave him, but Seraphine wouldn't. Her world revolved around him, after all. She was clamoring about wanting to end things now, but who knew how she would beg and plead for his forgiveness? He wouldn't give her what she wanted this time, though.

Unfortunately, Clifford didn't know Seraphine well enough. Once she'd decided to let go, she would follow through without another look back.

Clarissa, on the other hand, felt like ripping her hair out at the sight of the 200-million-dollar check. How could Seraphine be worthy of so much money when she was a fatherless bitch?

Now that she was Clifford's woman, all his money was hers! She scowled, feeling even angrier when she saw how calm Seraphine was. Who did she think she was to accept all of that so indifferently?

Clarissa watched as Clifford held out the check. She snatched it from him and threw it on the floor. "You want 200 million dollars? Rob a bank, why don't you? You wouldn't even be worth that much if you were to sell your flesh by the ounce!"

Seraphine wouldn't deny that she'd humbled herself when she was in love with Clifford, but that didn't mean she would allow a mistress and homewrecker to humiliate her. She looked at Clifford, the ice and clarity in her gaze making him feel somewhat on edge.

"Your new product is set to hit the market soon, Clifford. If you don't want your dirty laundry to be aired for the whole world to see, you should tell your sweetheart to pick up the check and give it to me. Of course, I'm also fine with you doing it," she said.

Clifford showed no intention of moving. He remained where he was as he looked into Seraphine's cool gaze, his chest tightening with discomfort. When did she grow such a backbone? How dare she speak to him like that?

When he didn't move, Seraphine asked coolly, "Are you sure you're not going to pick it up for me? The core technology is still in my mother's hands. Think about your new product—are you sure you have everything under control?"

Clifford wouldn't have backed down in the past, but he didn't want things to escalate too much, as he still needed the core technology for his new product. He told Clarissa to stay put as he got up and bent down to pick up the check.

Then, he handed it to Seraphine. "Remember what you said, Seraphine. Don't show your face in front of me anymore."

She took it, turned, and left without another word. There was no way Clifford's product launch would be successful! The technology behind it had yet to be perfected, after all. If Andrea were alive, perhaps there would be hope for refinement. But now…

Clifford watched as Seraphine left without hesitation. For some reason, a strange anxiety crept into his heart. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was truly losing her now. Even with Clarissa, the woman he'd once longed for, beside him, he still felt like things had changed.

One of his friends, Keith White, leaned in. "Same bet as always, Cliff. I bet Seraphine will be back early tomorrow morning to beg you for forgiveness. We all know she can't live without you! I bet a million dollars!"

Clifford agreed with that. How could Seraphine actually leave him? He laughed arrogantly and said, "I say she'll be back in three hours. Five million dollars."

Jason said, "I'll make it ten million dollars! If she's not back on her knees by tomorrow, Cliff gives us each ten million dollars. If she does show, we'll pay you."

Clifford smirked confidently. He sure as hell was getting that money tomorrow—he had no doubt Seraphine would beg him to take her back.

Still, what was this accursed sense of loss that kept gnawing at him?

Seraphine returned to her best friend, Lorraine Gosling's, place. After Andrea's funeral, she'd gone to Clifford's villa and packed up all her things. He'd never been home, so he had no idea she'd moved out.

Lorraine lived in a spacious, three-bedroom apartment. It was warm and homey, but she wasn't home much due to her work.

The next day, after breakfast, Seraphine went to the bank to cash the check. She deposited the funds into her account.

Just then, Janet Bronson, a doctor from the hospital where Andrea had been admitted, called. "Sera, I just noticed that some of your mother's belongings and documents are still here. You should come by to pick them up."

Seraphine headed to Janet's office. The latter handed the things to her, her gaze filled with heartache as she looked at Seraphine.

She said, "These are your mother's things. Make sure you keep them well. And take care of yourself, okay? Professor Lodge was a lovely woman. She always told us how kind and outstanding you are."

Tears welled up in Seraphine's eyes and flowed down her face as she thought of Andrea. She asked hoarsely, "Dr. Bronson, my mother was aggravated before her death. Do you know what exactly happened?"

Janet tried to recall what had happened that day. "Professor Lodge was on her phone. I don't know what she saw, but she suddenly screamed about Clifford being a bastard before passing out. Maybe you should check her phone. I've charged it for you."

Seraphine checked Andrea's phone after Janet left. The password was her birthday, so it was easy enough to unlock. She quickly searched the phone for clues that would explain what had happened.

Andrea didn't have many friends, just a few of her colleagues at the lab with whom she got along. However, Seraphine spotted a familiar profile picture among Andrea's WhatsApp conversations. It showed a woman's side profile, and she looked alluring as she held a red rose in her mouth.

Her fingers trembled as she opened the conversation. When she saw its contents, her voice broke in disbelief and anguish as she questioned, "How could it be her?"

Seraphine said, "Oh, by the way, I just signed a game character design deal that made me a ton of money, Lorraine. How about we take a trip together next spring?"It was a promise she had made with Lorraine, and she was thrilled to be able to fulfill it now.Lorraine immediately perked up. "I'm so down for it! You've owed me this trip for five years! I mean, we were supposed to go before we even graduated from university, but you were stuck taking care of that deadbeat Clifford instead. You and I can finally go on that trip now!"Seraphine exclaimed, "Yep! And for this new deal, I've decided to work with your side for the models. You see, those people back in S.P. Group have given their approval as well, acknowledging your company's esteemed professionalism."Lorraine's excitement surged when she heard that. She immediately jumped to her feet, threw her arms around Seraphine, and planted a kiss on her cheek. She then shook Seraphine excitedly, exclaiming, "You truly are the best

Upon seeing Lorraine's disbelief, Seraphine let out an exasperated laugh. "I might be the kind who gets swept up in love, but I'm not a complete fool, Ms. Gosling. Clifford's responsible for my mother's death. And for that reason alone, I could never like him again. "I had treated him well because I had truly wanted to build a life together with him. If I had known that his heart belonged to another, I would have never gotten involved with him. He's an unfaithful jerk, and if he loved Clarissa so much, he should've just gone to her. Why string me along?"Seraphine's indignation mounted as she talked, biting into the lobster meat with obvious pleasure. "Oh, right, Lorraine. The restaurant recently came up with a baked pear with honey and cinnamon dish that's excellent for soothing coughs. I'll have the kitchen prepare one for you."Lorraine nodded, saying, "That sounds good to me! You see, my throat's been bothering me for the last couple of days."Seraphine took out her phone and

Upon hearing what Jason said, Clifford was profoundly shocked. He then suddenly recalled Seraphine's previous remarks."Jeriton Grand offers great food and a top-notch ambiance, Clifford. You see, my mother has reserved a private room there for your use. "You're still starting out and don't have much disposable income, so feel free to use that VIP room for important clients. You'll definitely be able to make a good impression in that setting."Clifford couldn't help but wonder if Andrea was the one who owned the shares, not Seraphine. Had Seraphine owned them all along? He was profoundly shaken by that thought. He then thought of the private room they had used today, booked by Jason, and then his former VIP room, provided by Seraphine—the one where even Matthew had to treat him with utter deference—and everything suddenly made so much sense. He now realized that Matthew's deference had stemmed solely from Seraphine's connection, a deference that had, in turn, earned him respect

Seraphine flashed a dismissive smile at Jason, exclaiming, "I'm sending you off—far, far away! You're hereby permanently barred from this establishment, Jason! You have been harassing other female patrons. Jeriton Grand has already received more than one complaint about you. "You either keep that damn libido of yours under control, or you might as well just chop it off and toss it. You ought to stop parading like you're in heat and disgrace your family!"Jason's eyes snapped wide, locking his gaze on Seraphine in disbelief. He couldn't fathom how she had come by this information. He was also truly baffled as to why they were the ones being thrown out of the establishment.Clifford was utterly fixated on Seraphine's radiant smile, which he found cute, audacious, and utterly out of reach at the moment. Clarissa was utterly mortified. She felt even more infuriated by the fact that she didn't know how Seraphine had gotten so much power.Though her face was drained of all color, Chel

Upon hearing what Seraphine said, Chelsea was momentarily stunned, rooted to the spot.Seraphine calmly observed Chelsea's deathly pale expression, feeling completely unfazed. She then recalled how she had humbled herself and gone to great lengths to assist Chelsea back then.Chelsea was truly in agony right then, enveloped by a palpable sense of sorrow and hopelessness. Her fingers trembled slightly as she desperately tried to hold back her emotional collapse, yet the fear churning within her was impossible to conceal. She had been counting on that postgraduate recommendation to at least get her a job at Stephen's company. Having lost her postgraduate recommendation and achieved nothing in fashion design, her future looked bleak. She knew that a strong academic background was a prerequisite for securing a desirable match, even if she were to marry for alliance. She then snarled, "How could you be so cruel, Seraphine? How could you just ruin my future—"Seraphine sharply cut he

Seraphine smiled faintly, fixing her gaze on Chelsea. "I couldn't help but wonder where that self-pitying attitude of yours even came from, Chelsea. I mean, I once saw your weeping, fragile self and took you for a simple, innocent young woman deserving of patience and understanding. "I never realized you were so utterly nasty underneath it all, though. You actually want me to grovel and apologize to you, huh? Your arrogance is truly boundless!"She then yanked Chelsea's hair and struck her hard across the face."Ugh…" Chelsea's teeth slammed against her inner cheek, the sudden burst of blood in her mouth turning her pain into something unbearable.Seraphine dropped her handbag to the floor and loosened her grip on Chelsea's hair. She then landed a solid punch right on Chelsea's nose.Chelsea screamed, her face looking like a bloody mess as she stumbled backward in a sorry state.Seraphine executed everything with seamless precision and striking efficiency. It all happened so fas
