Chapter 7: First Night alone

Judith's POV

Einstein wakes me with his hungry cry around three in the morning. I pull him close on the bare mattress because the room is cold and the only cover we have is the hotel duvet that still smells like Mike.

Well, I hate it but I use it anyway. I feed him while I sit with my back against the wall and he falls asleep again the second he is full. I lay him down gently then sit there staring at nothing because sleep will not come back.

I keep hearing Keith’s slap, Mike saying my real name and Regina laughing the day she pushed me. My cheeks are wet before I even notice I am crying but I keep the sound inside so the baby stays asleep.

When the tears stop, I wipe my face on the duvet and count the ten thousand dollars one more time under the streetlight that comes through the blinds. I slide the envelope back under the mattress and tell myself tomorrow, I will fix everything.

Morning comes fast and Einstein is up again at seven demanding milk so I feed him and change him. I put
