TAYA's POV :
The full moon party was a party like no other. They got everything from a live DJ to fireworks, to bonfire at the beach, and even private rooms for... you know.
This was my very first high school party and I was beyond excited. Little did I know, I was about to learn the three most important rules of partying, and I had to learn them the hard way. Starting with Rule Number 1: Never drink anything they put on the drinks bar.
Ryder had warned me not to touch anything, drink anything, take anything, or talk to any guys at the party. But of course, I wasn't taking his advice, because that would practically leave me with nothing to do, while he was off somewhere gallivanting.
Now there was a big bowl of what I thought was fruit punch on the table, I was parched and the drink looked mighty refreshing. So I took down a few huge gulps, only to realize later on, those weren't just fruit punch.
Fifteen minutes into my first high school party and I already felt like throwing up. Could I be any more cool?
Meanwhile, Ryder was just chilling in the living room with his guys. Ryder and I had made an agreement: he agreed to loosen up the big-brother leash as long as I remain in the same room as him. He looked over to me and gave me a disapproving look when he noticed the red paper cup in my hand. I didn't want him to think that I couldn't handle myself, so I kept my cool, pretending as if the drink had no effect on me.
At this point, Ryder was a bit preoccupied. He and his friends were surrounded by these surfer groupies consisting of the Taylor Sisters and their clan. The Taylor Sisters are like the Hawaiian version of the Kardashian sisters.
The oldest was Valerie Taylor who was nineteen and currently attending beauty school. People called her the 'man-maker'. You could probably guess why. Next was Vanessa Taylor, the Kim K look-alike. She and Ryder were in the same grade. Everyone knew she had a major thing for Ryder, except Ryder himself. He was just too oblivious to notice these things.
Then there was Viviane Taylor. Funnily enough, we used to be best friends when we were little. But once we hit high school, she traded me off for cooler friends, as I was too boring for her liking.
The surfer groupies sat around the guys with their tight-tight dresses and high-pitched giggles. Those were the perks of being a hot young surfer in Hawaii. Girls threw themselves at them. They would do anything, and I mean anything in every position, just for a night with someone like Ryder and his friends.
Speaking of Ryder's friends... my eyes darted around the room to see if Blake was around. Blake was a year younger than Ryder, so he was always in my grade, but we never really got a chance to talk. But who knows, tonight might change all that.
Uh oh — but suddenly I felt something wasn't right.
That drink was totally not sitting well with me. My hand quickly went to cover my mouth as I dashed out, stumbling around the gigantic house in search of the nearest bathroom. But here was where I learned Rule Number 2: Never go into a bathroom without knocking first.
I spotted a bathroom at the corner of the hall, and it wasn't locked, so I barged right in. Not giving a care in the world, I threw my head straight over the sink.
"Ughh," I groaned.
It was the worst feeling ever, feeling like you wanted to hurl but your body wasn't cooperating. Nothing was coming out. So I made all kinds of ugly noises, hoping that it would get me to puke. But still, nothing.
Maybe it was a false alarm?
"You alright there?" suddenly a voice said from behind me.
I looked up in an instant, and there he was, Blake Harrison, smiling that mega-watt smile.
Granted this bathroom was huge, but how could I not see that he was here all along?
"Ahh!" I gaped in shock.
"Sshh! Don't scream,"
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm trying to hide from—"
"Blake? Blakey, are you in here?" suddenly we heard a girl's voice and the doorknob began to rattle.
He quickly put his finger over his mouth, signaling me to not snitch on him.
"Err, no, he's not here," I replied back and the doorknob stopped moving.
"Oh," we heard her mutter and the sound of her heels walking away.
After waiting in silence for a few more seconds, Blake turned to me with a relieved sigh and said, "Thanks for that."
"Viviane Taylor? Is that who you're hiding from?" of course I recognized that high-pitched bird-like voice.
"Yeah, I'm sorry but the girl's kinda... crazy,"
"Ha-ha, yeah," I agreed. She really could be. One time when we were kids, she bit off the head of my Barbie doll in a rage because a boy she liked shared a sandwich with me.
"You're Taya, right?" he said, his eyes studying my face intently.
He knows my name?
"Yeah. And you're the Blake Harrison,"
He smirked when I said that.
"I almost didn't recognize you with the new hair. They look great on you, by the way,"
"Thanks," I couldn't stop my lips from curling into a smile. "Those look great on you too," I was referring to his gorgeous golden hair.
"What, this old thing?" he grinned, raking his hair with his fingers.
Hubba-hubba.
"I can't believe you know my name," I meant to say that in my head, but my mouth went and said it first.
"Of course, you're RJ's little sister,"
"Cousin... sister," I corrected him quickly. As if that changed anything.
"Yeah, I've seen you around. But we never really talk, do we?" he said, cocking his sexy head to the side.
"No, we don't,"
"That's a shame. I would have liked talking to you,"
"Yeah?" I bit my lip so he wouldn't notice I was grinning. "Well, why didn't you?"
"I don't know if you've realized this, but there's a rule,"
"A what?"
"Every guy in our school knows that if they wanna get close to you, they would need RJ's permission first,"
"That's stupid. How the hell was that even a thing?"
That was a rhetorical question. Of course, we both knew exactly how it happened, or who made it happened.
"Don't blame RJ though," he said quickly as if he could read my mind. "It's not his fault that guys around here are so damn thirsty and you're just so beautiful,"
Wha—hold up, pretty boy say what?
I wished I had recorded that.
"Well I'm sure not all guys are like that," I said coolly, trying to sound unfazed.
"Well maybe not. But once you've been in the game long enough, and seen what RJ and I had seen, you'd lose faith too,"
"So you're saying that there are practically no good guys on the island left? And I'm just gonna die sad and alone with my pet penguin?"
"You have a pet penguin?"
"No, but if I was gonna die all alone, I should at least get a cool pet,"
That got him to laugh. Even the way he laughed was gorgeous.
"Well... what about you?" I breathed suddenly.
"What about me?" he said.
"Aren't you a good guy?"
His ocean blue eyes held his gaze on me, as if he was thinking of something.
"What do you think?" he said with a slight undertone.
"I don't know,"
"Well, what about you?"
"Me?"
"Are you a good girl?"
Whoa, there cowboy... is this what they call flirting?
"I don't know," I said, trying to sound cool and not the nervous wreck that I was.
"Should we try and find out?" he spoke, catching me off guard.
A small smile curved up his face, and without warning, he took one step closer towards me. My first instinct was to take a step back, but I decided to hold my ground instead.
He was so close to me now. I could even inhale his delicious scent and it was making my head spin. My chest was pounding. I hoped he didn't notice I was having trouble breathing.
His hand then reached for my face, his fingertips landed softly on my cheek. My skin was burning at his touch.
"Your lips are so soft," he commented as his thumb rubbed against the lower part of my lip.
He leaned in closer as his hand tilted my chin up. And the next thing I felt was his warm lips on mine. He tasted like mint and something sweet.
I'm kissing Blake-fucking-Harrison!
His other hand swiftly moved to grip my back, pulling me closer to him. My own hands flew up and held him by his shoulder blades. He was all rock-hard muscles.
"Mmhm," he murmured, a sign that he liked my touch.
He deepened the kiss and his tongue gently brushed over my lip, asking for permission. I parted my lips slowly and his tongue delved right in. I gasped in response, but somehow it came out in a moaning-like noise.
What was that?
He gripped my body tighter and in one fell swoop, he lifted me up so I was sitting on the sink counter.
"Taya!" Suddenly we heard a familiar voice.
"Shit," Blake pulled away in an instant.
"T, are you in here?" Yes, that would be Ryder, unmistakably.
He started knocking on the door and the doorknob rattled urgently.
I am so dead.
Judging by the look on his face, Blake probably had the same idea. He was just frozen in shock.
I quickly scanned the room, looking for a way out, and all I could see was this window on my left. Mind you, I was drunk on alcohol and high from Blake Harrison's lips, I wasn't thinking straight.
Also, I had a fear of heights. If I had looked down before I jump, I wouldn't have jumped. So before I could change my mind, I just closed my eyes, leaped forward and out the window, as if I was freaking Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.
This was not my brightest idea.
I was falling head first, down the two-story window. I couldn't see anything and I was just anticipating hitting the hard ground down below—but no.
* THUD! *
Instead, I had fallen on something... or someone?
"Ouw!" and it made a noise.
I peeled my eyes open and I found myself laying face down on top of another person— a guy!
"Oh my..." I was struggling to get up but my hand slipped and my face fell to his face, with my lips right atop his.
There was a split second moment when both of us were just frozen in shock. The word 'awkward' would be a gross understatement to describe it.
"Oh god!" I pulled away and quickly rolled to my side.
"Whoa, you could at least take me out to dinner first," the guy chuckled at my reaction.
"I am so sorry—" I was scrambling to get up, and I managed to do it in the most ungraceful way possible.
Meanwhile, the guy sat up slowly, not even slightly fazed by what just happened. He looked up and I caught a glimpse of his luminous amber eyes. It was such a rare color—I was entranced.
His eyes were warm, with a hint of danger in it. I had never seen eyes like these before. And actually, I had never seen this guy before.
"I've heard people in Hawaii are friendly, but I didn't know they were this friendly," he stifled a laugh, rubbing his jaw in the process.
"A-are you okay?" I said to him.
"Well I think you broke my lighter," he pulled out a small metallic thing from the ground. Then he whipped a cigarette out of his denim jacket and stuck it inside his mouth. He flicked the lighter a few times, until finally the sparks turned to a fire and the tip of his cigarette burned.
"Ah nope, false alarm," he said in a cheerful tone.
Uh-oh!
Suddenly I was feeling nauseous again, and I knew for sure I couldn't hold it in this time.
"Oh no—" before I could do or say anything else, I had puked my guts out all over the ground.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," he moved away automatically.
It wasn't the prettiest sight. I was sorry to anyone who had to witness that, my own eyes included.
"You okay there, Blondie?"
"Don't... call me... that," I said through labored breaths.
"Taya?" and suddenly I heard Ryder's voice in the background, it seemed like he was getting closer. "T, where are you?"
I can't let Ry see me like this!
"I have to go! I'm really sorry," I covered my mouth and gathered whatever was left of my dignity, and made a dash out of that crime scene.
"Wait—"
"Sorry!" I yelled through my hands as I ran.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, brought us to Rule No.3 in partying with Taya Williams: if you ever need to jump off a two-story window, make sure you look down first.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
I couldn't sleep that night. Apart from being excited for the first day back to school tomorrow, my brain was also busy trying to process everything that had happened.
In the span of twenty four hours: I had dyed my hair platinum blonde, I found my cousin burning away his college future, I went to my first ever high school party, I got my first kiss from the guy I had been crushing on forever, and I fell out a two-story window to embarrass myself in front of a complete stranger.
I guess it was safe to say that my life was no longer just a blank white page.

TAYA's POV :"I am the furthest thing away to a Kate Winslet or Claire Danes. I can't possibly do this!" I stated firmly, tossing the script back to Hallee on the cafeteria table."I have faith in you, bestie, you can totally do this," she beamed. "Plus with your whole new blonde look, I could easily have mistaken you for a young Kate Winslet. And did I mention how much I love your hair, by the way, you are slaying it girlfriend!""Get your nose out of my ass, Hal. I'm not doing it," I rolled my eyes at her. "I can't act,""But you're so perfect for the part of Rose,"I sighed and eyed her suspiciously. "Not enough people signed up for the play, huh?"She replied with a sheepish grin."I told you I'm joining the theater club as a stagehand. There's no way I'm gonna be out there on the stage, acting, let alone be the female lead!"My best-friend Hallee had been a theater geek all her life. This year I finally decided to join her and the theater club, since I needed to impress colleges

I hissed under my breath, firmly but soft enough so that no one could hear us."Well, I never got your name," he shrugged.Being cheeky are we?"Everyone, we will take a short five minute break, and then we'll start rehearsals when we come back, alright?" Mrs. Zee's booming voice shouted over us all.Everyone started dispersing to different directions and Hallee raced over to us."Hi Judah, welcome to the theater club. I'm Hallee, co-director and writer of the play. And this is Taya, she's going to be playing Rose,""Taya?" he raised an eyebrow and nodded. "That’s a unique name. I like it,""It's Japanese. Her mom's half-Japanese, so—" Hallee was just
TAYA’s POV :Please, don’t tell me Judah saw Blake and me kissing behind the bleachers! Oh god, what if he tells other people? We live in a small town. Ryder’s gonna find out in no time and I’m gonna die!"Hey, how long have you been here?" I said nervously."Long enough," he raised an eyebrow at me playfully.Of course, he’s sneering. Pretending to be unfazed, I strode over and took the seat next to him. He leaned back and threw his gaze up to the sky. He was huffing and puffing smoke like a freaking chimney."Those things will kill you, you know," I commented."We all die in the end,” he replied. “This is just helping to smooth out the process,"I didn't expect that answer at all. What a crazy ass, depressing dude!"Wh
TAYA's POV :Remember when I said that my love life was drier than the Sub-Saharan desert? Well...For the next couple of days, Blake and I were inseparable. We texted nonstop, we met up in secret every chance we got, and we made out, a lot.It had been a full week of secret rendezvous with Blake Harrison now. We did a great job at keeping things a secret too. I didn't even tell Hallee about any of it, when normally I'd tell her everything. TAYA's POV :"Mom, I'm going out! See ya!" I was racing down the staircase in my tight sequin dress and high heels, one wrong step and I'd snowball down the whole thing.I never wore heels before, ever. We lived in Hawaii, so slippers were always my go to. But for last Christmas, mom got me these cute silver heels and I had been saving them for a special occasion— such as this.I didn’t even wait for my mom’s response. I was out of the house within seconds. And as soon as I got out of the house, I spotted Blake's car waiting for me outside. My heart fluttered at the sight."You look really pretty," Blake smiled widely as soon as I got into his Audi."Thanks, you look really pretty too," I replied. He did look amazing. His hair was neatly pushed back, and he was wearing a crisp white shirt and jeans. If Paul Wesley and Robert
BLAKE’s POV :“If you can't make up your mind about me already by now, maybe you shouldn't even bother,"Her words were haunting me as I drove down the empty road. I wasn’t expecting to have this talk tonight, so I didn’t have the best answer, but I was only trying to be honest."So, am I just another Viviane to you?"Of course not. She was totally different from whatever Viviane was to me. Hell, she was different from all the girls I had been with before."Blake, are you ashamed of me?"Again, no. I was never ashamed of her. But I was scared about dating a girl in general. And not just any girl too, she w
TAYA's POV :"Just one grand romantic declaration, was that really too much to ask?" I groaned as I threw my body lazily on Hallee's bed."All I wanted was for Blake to turn the car around, get out, and declare his undying love for me. I would've taken him back in a heartbeat!""What a stinkin' bastard! I still can't believe he left you on the side of the road just like that," Hallee followed suit."Well, maybe it was my fault. I was the one who told him to go and I was being a real bitch too," I shrugged."Still, how could he do that to a girl? Maybe we should tell RJ about this, so he can have a little talk with Blake?""And bring about the second wave Coronavirus? I don't think so. Hals, you've promised you're not gonna tell anyone about this,""Ah, fine," she sighed in defeat. After the fiasco tha
TAYA's POV :"The kissing scene had to be real," Judah says matter of factly."The hell it is!" I gaped."See here Blondie, I don't do anything half-assed. So if I'm gonna do this for real, I'm doing this for real alright,""But — wait -- that's not — I can't —""We'll look hella stupid if we're faking it and expect people to believe it was real," he interjects."But... it's... actual kissing?""So?" he scoffed. "It's just kissing. It's just like eating cake. You do it. Most times it tasted good. Sometimes not so much. That's it,""Maybe for you, you've done it like a thousand times. But that's not the case with me,"Judah shot me a look I couldn’t decipher. Suddenly, he licked his lips and said, "If experience was the issue, you know I could help with that

Hallee came right in, bombarding my personal space as soon as I stepped out of the auditorium lobby. Her eyes were wide, full of hope and expectancy. I gave her a small, sad smile and sighed, "I didn't get in,""Aw, man! Are you serious? I really thought you had it in the bag. I mean, the Juilliard admission was all over you, flying you out to New York City for a damn audition too,""Meh, it's okay. I'll get it next time,"It really was nice of the Juilliard Academy to fly me all the way over here for an audition into their selective conservatory program. A representative of the school saw my graduation piece at UCLA and she loved it so much, she came to me after the show to talk about the possibility of me having a future in New York City — Broadway and all that jazz.I never even thought that something like this would be an option. Plus, we didn't have any money for gifts or holidays. Usually, she’d work through Christmas, and I’d get high and pass it by.But not this year. This year would be our first Christmas together, Blondie and I. We went back to Hawaii for Thanksgiving, as we promised our friends, but we were staying in California for Christmas. Plane tickets were expensive and Blondie wanted to stay here and rehearse anyway. That’s right, my very own Blondie was chosen as the lead role for UCLA’s upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. That's fucking sick. I'm hella proud of her. The play would open in January, and Blondie would rather spend Christmas break practicing than anything else. Even though the school and the production were on break
GABE’s POV :It all started because of one stupid promise.I promised my friends that I would speak to Maddie before I leave for college. I had a crush on this girl since freshman year of high school, though the number of conversations we had could be counted with one hand.Though my friends had already left for college and I was the last one to go, I couldn’t leave without keeping that promise. But the problem was that Maddie didn't even know I exist. I couldn’t just go to her house and declare my undying love for her. I had to meet her somewhere and I don't know, maybe strike a conversation first? So when I got word that there was gonna be a party at a yacht thrown by Ryder Jake Williams and that Maddie would be there, I thought this must be a sign. Maybe this was the universe’s way of giving me a chance to speak to her.Ryder Jake Williams was actually Taya’s cousin. He was quite well known in this town. He was this surfer hero that all the guys wished they could be and all the gir
RYDER’s POV :“Hey, Ryyy!” Taya screeched as soon as I picked up her Facetime call.“Hey, T, what’s up?” I chuckled. From where I was standing, my cousin sister looked alright. Her skin was glowing and her hair was neatly tied up. Several days had passed since she left Hawaii and I was glad to see her alive and doing well.“Ry, we just saw the article online, congrats on winning the Hawaii Pro. We’re so proud of you!”“Thanks,” I said. “Who’s we?”“Judah and me, of course,” she chirped. She then turned the camera slightly and showed Judah sitting next to her on the couch.“Right,” I snorted. “How are you doing out there? Is everything good? Is he being nice to you? You tell me if he’s doing something sh—”“Everything is great and he is perfect, Ryder,” she cut me off sternly. “We just moved in to our apartment and got our first couch today. Everything’s great here, so don’t you worry about us,”“Geez, stop referring to yourself as we and us. It’s creepy,” I rolled my eyes.“Oh, Ryder,
BLAKE’s POV :“Blake, no!” My mom said rather sternly. She was blocking the door to my dad’s office with her body. “Your father’s not in a good mood right now,” she hissed.“This can’t wait,” I said simply and pushed past inside.“Blake!” she called after me, but I only shut the door behind her.My dad finally came back from his business trip to Nevada. He was gone for weeks. When I heard that he was back tonight, I left the prom right away and went home. I was still in my prom attire as I walked into his office. I yanked my tie open and stepped inside. He was alone, sitting at his desk, and a glass of bourbon was by his side. You could tell a lot about my dad’s condition by his choice of drink. Scotch meant that he was happy, and bourbon meant that he just had a bad deal. He mustn’t be in a good mood right now.“Dad, I have to talk to you,” I said once I stood in front of his desk.“Not now son,” he sighed and tipped his head back. “It’s been a long day,”“It can’t wait, dad,”I had

Finally, it was time for Judah and me to leave for California. We got our two big suitcases with us and we were ready to go. Except, mom and Jenny kept trying to hold us from leaving, giving us advice after advice. The two of them exchanged a look and a smile. They had been giving us the same advice over and over again the past week. But like Jesse said, moms will be moms.“You’re right,” mom sighed finally. “I know you two will be fine,”“But please, call us anyway,” Jenny added.“We will,” Judah said as he hugged his mom. “I’ll miss you ma,”“I’ll miss you too, sweetheart,” Jenny started crying as she leaned
TAYA’s POV :We were sitting under a bed full of stars. And they were shining so bring, they looked like diamonds scattered across the Milky Way. I had never seen anything more magical than this. I was completely in awe, but Judah didn’t look so impressed.“What?” I asked him. “You know a better spot than this in Hawaii?”“Of course,” he said.“Where?”He put a hand on the side of my cheek, tilting my face towards his. And with that sexy smile on his face, he aimed for my lips and said, “Right… here,”Oh, that was so smooth. His lips landed on top of mine gently and I tilted my face to the side, allowing for more access. Tightening his grip on my face, Judah deepened the kiss and I kissed him back with the same hunger and passion. Though it was cold out here, my body was burning up. Soft moans escaped my lips and Judah’s tongue slid his way into my mouth. Our tongues met and they tangled breathlessly as warmth and desire overtook our bodies.Pulling away slightly, Judah threw the blan

I slept pretty late last night because I was binge watching Stranger Things on Netflix. And since I’m not a high school student anymore, aren’t we done with this? “Wake up, sweetie,” she said again when I refused to open my eyes.“Mom, what is it?” I sighed dramatically. “It’s Saturday morning… and I’m not in school anymore!”“I know, but you have company downstairs,” she said.Out of curiosity, I peered my eyes open. “Who?”“Who else,” she smiled knowingly. She leaned down and kissed my forehead, saying, “Oh, and happy birthday, sweetie,”That’s right!
